Parable of the Sower 1: The Path

July 24, 2006

Matthew 13:3-8,18-23
"A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4As he was scattering the seed, some fell
along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Some fell on rocky places,
where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was
shallow. 6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they
withered because they had no root. 7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew
up and choked the plants. 8Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a
crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

18"Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19When anyone hears
the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes
and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the
path. 20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who
hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21But since he has no root, he
lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word,
he quickly falls away. 22The one who received the seed that fell among the
thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the
deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. 23But the one who received
the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it.
He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."

The Path

Matthew 13:19 (MSG)

When anyone hears news of the kingdom and doesn't take it in, it just remains on the
surface, and so the Evil One comes along and plucks it right out of that person's heart.
This is the seed the farmer scatters on the road.

What does “doesn’t take it in” means? Doesn’t apply what he heard, Did not believe

The Wise and Foolish Builders (Matthew 7:24-28)

24"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into
practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came
down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it
did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears
these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man
who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the
winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

What was the message? The Jesus Christ died for our sins

1 Corinthians 15:1-7
1Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you
received and on which you have taken your stand. 2By this gospel you are
saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have
believed in vain.

3For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died
for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised
on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Peter,[b]
and then to the Twelve. 6After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of
the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have
fallen asleep. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8and last of
all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

Question:
Is my heart representative of a path? If not, is it a rocky place, among thorns or a good soil?

Memory Verse:
1John 1:3-6 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The
man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the
truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God's love[a] is truly made complete
in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk
as Jesus did.

Hmmmmm…
21"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but
only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on
that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out
demons and perform many miracles?' 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew
you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
