INTRODUCTION

During Annual Action Plan 2004-2005 of central ground water board, NCCR, Raipur
under the item of piezometer construction in tribal districts (Raigarh, Korba and Surguja)
of Chhattisgarh ten piezometer wells were envisaged to be drilled in Ganga –Mahanadi
basin .The aim of poiezometer construction was to monitor potentiometric surface in the
area.The depth of drilling was restricted to 200 meters. Accordingly three piezometers
were drilled in Raigarh district.

LOCATION

Gharghoda (Toposheet No, 64 N/8, Longitude 83°22’00” Latitude 22°10’50”) village is

at a distance of about 50 kms. from Raigrah on Raigarh – Gharghoda road .The
piezometer is located on government land in the open play ground of Government
Higher secondary school.

HISTORY OF DRILLING OPERATION

The rig No. DR/WABCO/69/31 was shifted to the site on 19/07/2004.After getting done
the preliminary arrangements, the drilling for pilot hole was started on 06/08/2004 with
251 mm dia RR bit and was continued till 7.50 meters. And rimming was done using 374
mm RR bit on 9/06/2004 Due to heavy rain drilling was held up and on 09/08/2004
further drilling was started with 216 mm RR button bit and was drilled upto 151.7
meters. After thorough washing of borehole, the annular space between wall of assembly
and was surrounded with 5-8mm size gravel .the well was developed by air compressor
in stages and direct till the getting clear water.

LITHOLOGY

During drilling of piezometer well at the site Gharghoda the drill cutting for every three
meter of depth were collected. They were properly washed, drilled and kept in sample
box for and megascopic studies. After careful study of the litho sample the litho logs for
piezometers was prepared and presented in Table-1

WELL ASSEMBLY

Based on study of litholog, drill time log and general hydrogeological condition of the
area the following well assembly was recommended and the same was lowered.
