But of Israel he says, All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.

A Christian Zionist: You guys are going to be so surprised when Jesus comes back to redeem a remnant of Israel, aren't you? Says so right in Revelation. His covenant with them is everlasting. I am now out of here, I can't stand looking at all these twisted scriptures and ideas anymore. The person who made the above statement does not understand that Israel (or: the Jews) cannot be saved by continuing to reject God's covenant: The new covenant in Christ's blood, which was shed for all peoples, through which all can be saved, by grace alone, through repentance and faith in the risen Christ. Israel, today, rejects Christ; just as Israel rejected Christ, in person, 2,000 years ago. All covenants are conditional, and the covenant God made with Abraham and his offspring, like all covenants, was a two-way street, which was fullled by Christ and by those Jews who rst repented and believed in him. Israel, as a nation, has never kept the covenants God made with them, because these covenants were conditional upon Israel keeping the whole of the law of Moses, which it never did and never could do. Christ came to fulll the law and to show us the way of grace and salvation through faith, which enables us to live the commands of the law from our hearts; a truth which the Jews have never understood. And, until Israel was destroyed in 70 AD, God continued to plead with Israel to do so; only to have his offer of mercy and grace rejected, again and again: St. Paul said: Brothers, my hearts desire and prayer to God for them [Israel] is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to Gods righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. But the righteousness based on faith says, Do not say in your heart, Who will ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down) or Who will descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).

But of Israel he says, All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.

But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justied, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us? So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says, I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; with a foolish nation I will make you angry. Then Isaiah is so bold as to say, I have been found by those who did not seek me; I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me. But of Israel he says, All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people. (Rom. 10) What Revelation says about disobedient Israel is this, concerning what she is: The Whore of Babylon, speaking about the judgment of Jerusalem, which occurred in 70 AD, within the lifetime of those who heard Christ pronounce the abandonment of Israel by God, its soon coming judgement and destruction of this city of Jerusalem and the temple: After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was made bright with his glory. And he called out with a mighty voice,

Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast. For all nations have drunk the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living. Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues; for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. Pay her back as she herself has paid back others, and repay her double for her deeds; mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed. As she gloried herself and lived in luxury, so give her a like measure of torment and mourning, since in her heart she says, I sit as a queen, I am no widow, and mourning I shall never see. For this reason her plagues will come in a single day, death and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with re; for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her. And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and

lived in luxury with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning. They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, Alas! Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come. And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, ne linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, ne our, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls. The fruit for which your soul longed has gone from you, and all your delicacies and your splendors are lost to you, never to be found again! The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud, Alas, alas, for the great city that was clothed in ne linen, in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold, with jewels, and with pearls! For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste. And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning, What city was like the great city? And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out, Alas, alas, for the great city where all who had ships at sea grew rich by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been laid waste. Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets, for God has given judgment for you against her! Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,

So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and will be found no more; and the sound of harpists and musicians, of ute players and trumpeters, will be heard in you no more, and a craftsman of any craft will be found in you no more, and the sound of the mill will be heard in you no more, and the light of a lamp will shine in you no more, and the voice of bridegroom and bride will be heard in you no more, for your merchants were the great ones of the earth, and all nations were deceived by your sorcery. And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on earth. It is quite evident the author is speaking of Israel and Jerusalem here simply by comparing this last verse, in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on earth. (Rev. 18). Where have we heard this before? And who said it? Jesus said it to Israel: Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will og in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

But of Israel he says, All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! See, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. (Mat. 23: 32-39). The only possible reference to any remnant of Jews who may repent and believe in Christ at some future time is this: And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but re came down from heaven and consumed them. (Rev: 20:9). Jesus foretold the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple after he cursed and abandoned Israel for her unbelief (Matt: 23:38-39, as we saw above). To this very day Jerusalem is trodden underfoot by the Gentiles and not one stone of the temple is left upon another after having been destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD: And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down. And they asked him, Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place? And he said, See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, I am he! and, The time is at hand! Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terried, for these things must rst take place, but the end will not be at once. Then he said to them, Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my names sake. This will be your opportunity to bear witness. Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand

how to answer, or I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. You will be hated by all for my names sake. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your lives. But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then let those who are in Judea ee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, for these are days of vengeance, to fulll all that is written. Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fullled. (Luke 21: 5-24).
