You Gotta Do What?

You know you got to go through hell before you get to heaven

Maybe everyone knows that longing for home. Folgers coffee will occasionally run the old commercial about the young man, apparently a college student, who arrives at home for Christmas in the very early morning hours. Once his family realizes he is home, there is great excitement. We all know it. There is something extraordinarily special about going home. The line from the Steve Miller Band song speaks to the sense of how hard it is to be away from home. And yet there is the recognition that the desire to be home cannot always be fulfilled. There is a Biblical ring to part of this. As often happens, a Biblical matter is taken to extremes. Somewhere along the way, someone began to present the idea that it is necessary to endure hell before a person can have heaven. Well, it may not be hell, exactly. It is torment or purgatory. Maybe we come to accept the idea that since we do not deserve heaven we have to be punished before we can receive something as glorious as heaven. We carry the undeserving idea in a lot of areas. In physical and athletic development we say, No pain, no gain. We hate it when someone achieves wealth or greatness without having to suffer for it. It is the application of a realistic principle of value. Everything of value has a price. Whether it is building an athletic form or building a fortune, there is a price to pay, for sure. So back to the heaven and hell issue. Do you have to go to hell before you get to heaven. No! Thankfully not. Heaven is not a reward for enduring enough torture on earth. Now do not misinterpret. Heaven is tied to faith and faithfulness in this life. Just dont get the idea that God puts us through torture to make us worthy of heaven. As the song says, Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe. We have heaven because of Him. (Romans 8:1-2) Russ
