Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Stewardship Appeal
We will be resuming our annual stewardship appeal this year. Our parish is extremely grateful for your support and committed to serving you. This appeal is very important to our planning process in order to maintain our facilities and ministries. Our appeal schedule is as follows: October 30 - Financial Report to Parish. November 6 - Pastor Homily, parishioners receive letter from pastor and commitment card. November 13 - Commitment weekend. May God put forth his richest blessings upon you and your family. And by his grace may we become better stewards of his time, talent and treasure.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
There is one word or command that summarizes todays Gospel - love. For Jesus there is no distinction between these two commands of loving God and neighbor. One naturally flows from the other. In fact, for Jesus, these commands constitute a way of life for Christian stewards; a unique approach to life and to their relationship with others. Our neighbors include everyone with whom we come into contact: family members, friends, people we dont like, strangers and particularly those most in need of our love and compassion. Love is always for doing well and helping others grow closer to the Lord. What are ways in which we might do better at following Christs love command?

*As a reminder our GYM and the Parish Life Center can be rented by parishioners or non parishioners for an event. Please call Elaine at 630-396-6073 for more information.

Stewardship Prayer
Almighty God, We thank You for all the gifts You have given us; our lives, our loved ones, in short all that we are and all that we have. Most of all, we thank You for Jesus, Your son and our redeemer, who came among us to show us the way to eternal life. Jesus was the perfect steward of Your gifts, showing us that complete trust in You is necessary and that giving of self is a most important part of following Him. Please help us to grow in Your love and in the strength to give of ourselves to others so that we may follow Your son's example and help all people to complete His mission of salvation. May our every offering of our time, talents, and our material resources be made in the same spirit of sacrifice that Jesus taught us by His life and death for us. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Your son and our Lord. Amen

Last May, 81 Montini Catholic students completed a total of 128 challenging Advanced Placement exams finishing with 16 perfect scores (5 points) in six different subjects! At Montini Catholic, the AP results recorded 95 scores of 3 points or greater, earning college credit at most Universities and Colleges. From these AP Exam scores, 16 students earned the AP Scholar Award in 2011 (nine students from the Class of 2012 and seven from the Class of 2011). OCT 23: WORLD MISSION SUNDAY - 2011

Introduction: Over one billion Catholics all over the world observe today as the 85th World Mission Sunday. This annual observance was instituted 85 years ago in 1926 by a papal decree issued by Pope Pius XI. Every year since then, the universal Church has dedicated the month of October to reflection on and prayer for the missions. On Mission Sunday, Catholics gather to celebrate the Eucharist and to contribute to a collection for the work of evangelization around the world. This annual celebration gives us a chance to reflect on the importance of mission work for the life of the Church. It reminds us that we are one with the Church around the world and that we are all committed to carrying on the mission of Christ, however different our situations may be. The greatest missionary challenge that we face at home is a secular and consumerist society for which God is not important, moral values are relative and institutional religions are unnecessary. The Holy Fathers Mission Sunday messages: In his 2010 message, the Pope focused on showing how faith in Christ must lead Christians to build strong faith communities, which become signs for the world that it is possible for people of different races and cultures to live and thrive together: Every Catholic has an obligation to participate in the churchs missionary outreach in their own families and communities and by supporting foreign missions. In his message for the 85th World Mission Sunday of 2011, Pope Benedict XVI reminds us that the work of evangelization involves everyone, everything, always. He underlines that the Church is missionary by her very nature, and that the work of spreading the Gospel is the joint responsibility of all. We cannot rest easy in the thought that, after two thousand years, there are people who still do not know Christ, who have not yet heard His message of salvation. Moreover, it is disturbing that many people, having received the Gospel announcement, have forgotten or abandoned it and no longer identify themselves in the Church. He also observes that the work of evangelization should include careful attention to the human needs of ones neighbors, and, thus, mission work cannot overlook questions associated with human development, justice, and liberation from all forms of oppression. All missionary efforts also require financial support because the love of God can often be explained to the poor only by providing them with food and a means of livelihood. The sick can experience the healing power of Jesus only through the dedicated service of doctors, nurses, and health care workers.

The Knights of Columbus are hosting their annual Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, November 5; from 5:00 8:00PM in the PLC. We will be serving pasta with meat gravy, salad, bread, garlic bread, desserts, coffee and soft drinks. Meatballs and sausage will be available for an additional charge, which can be paid at the door. There will also be beer and wine available for a donation. Tickets can be purchased in advance, for a $1.00 savings after all of the masses the weekend of October 22 & 23. Tickets purchased in advance are $6.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors and $4.00 for children under 12. Families of 2 adults and 2 or more children can purchase a family ticket for $20.00. Tickets are also available at the door. Bring your appetites to this annual fall event. It is a great opportunity to not have to cook, and enjoy a good meal with family, friends and fellow parishioners.

Pray for the Children Weekend

Take a minute to pray for the children so that they grow up strong and drug free. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of your children all around the world. You have created them in your image and likeness. Help us to guide, affirm and love them so they are equipped to make healthy choices in their lives. Help the children experience your great love for them deep in their hearts. Send your Spirit upon them to comfort, heal, protect and enlighten all their decisions. Amen

God Is Love
God IS Love God is love, let heav'n adore him; God is love let earth rejoice. Let creation sing before him, And exalt him with one voice. God who laid the earth's foundation; God who spread the heavens above; God who breathes through all creation; God is love, eternal love. God is love and love enfolds us All the world in one embrace: With unfailing grasp God holds us Every child of every race; And when human hearts are breaking Under sorrow's iron rod. Then we find that self same aching Deep within the heart of God. God is love and though with blindness Sin afflicts all human life. God's eternal loving kindness Guides us through our earthly strife. Sin and death and hell shall never O'er us final triumph gain. God is love so love forever O'er the universe shall reign. These words, which we pray (sing) today, bring about one of the most important ideas of Christianity: God IS love. What do we mean by this? Saint John expresses in his first letter, "with remarkable clarity the heart of the Christian faith: the Christian image of God and the resulting image of mankind and its destiny. In the same verse, Saint John also offers a kind of summary of the Christian life: "We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us"." (Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est) This theological statement about God is so important to our faith, that Pope Benedict XVI dedicated an entire encyclical to it, Deus Caritas Est. "God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him" (I Jn 4:16). These words that begin the Encyclical express the core of the Christian faith. In a world in which God's Name is sometimes linked with revenge or even with hatred and violence, the Christian message of God-Love is very timely. The Encyclical is divided into two main parts. Part I presents a theological and philosophical reflection on the different dimensions of "love" - eros, philia, agape - and explains certain essential facts concerning God's love for man and the intrinsic connection of this love with human love. Part II deals with the actual practice of the commandment to love one's neighbor. If you have not had a chance to read, either in part or in its entirety, I urge to do so! The encyclical can be found on the Vatican Website, www.vatican.va<http://www.vatican.va>.

Life Matters: Persons with Disabilities

It says a lot about a society when a group of obstetricians and geneticists needs to be told by an 11-year-old girl that her life is worth living. According to The New York Times, Sarah told a roomful of medical specialists that she likes to read. Math used to be hard, but it is getting easier. She plays clarinet in her school band. She is a junior girl scout and an aunt, and she likes to organize, so her room is very clean. Last year she won three medals in the Special Olympics. I am so lucky I get to do so many things, she concluded. I just want you to know, even though I have Down syndrome, it is O.K.1 Why would such a gathering be necessary? Because many of these specialistslike so many others in our society have begun to think of babies as material goods, as products adults create to enhance their lives. And if the product is flawed and beyond the power of medicine to correct, we simply send it back. Tragically, the attitude of such experts carries enormous weight when couples are confronted with a diagnosis of disability in their unborn child. In an attempt to offer couples full disclosure of potential health and learning challenges, many specialists present a gloomy picture of the childs prospects. And many urge parents to consider abortion, contributing to the shameful fact that about ninety percent of unborn children diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted. Given this high termination rate, in the future it will be even less likely that parents and specialists personally experience the love and joy that children with Down syndrome or other disabilities can bring to their families and communities. Unborn children diagnosed with physical or mental limitations are particularly at risk of being killed because abortion is legally available throughout the United States, and many people believe parents have a right to decide to end the life of an unborn child who may not measure up to their expectations. But the threat to the lives of people with disabilities does not end at birth. Parents of special needs children, and adults with disabilities who are able to seek their own medical care, often have to fight for medical treatment that routinely would be given to someone with no overt disability. Its as if those with disabilities bear the burden of proving to medical personnel that they are better off alive than dead! And of course, millions of Americans who have enjoyed excellent health and fitness throughout most of their lives may discover firsthand in their later years the pervasive bias against providing treatment to those with diminished mental and physical abilities. Further, when dementia robs an individual of the ability for meaningful communication, many people today misguidedly consider that individual to be expendable. This must change. In his encyclical letter The Gospel of Life, Blessed John Paul II identified the heart of the tragedy being experienced by modern man: the eclipse of the sense of God a n d o f man (no. 21). In fact, when the sense of God is lost, there is also a tendency to lose the sense of man, of his dignity and his life (Ibid.). How often Blessed John Paul II reminded us that every human personno matter how vulnerable or helpless, no matter how young or how old, no matter how healthy, handicapped or sick, no matter how useful or productive for societyis a being of inestimable worth created in the image and likeness of God.2 Our secular cultures blindness to the fundamental rights of persons with disabilities led Blessed John Paul to say:
The starting point for every reflection on disability is rooted in the fundamental convictions of Christian anthropology: even when disabled persons are mentally impaired or when their sensory or intellectual capacity is damaged, they are fully human beings and possess the sacred and inalienable rights that belong to every human creature. Indeed, human beings, independently of the conditions in which they live or of what they are able to express, have a unique dignity and a special value from the very beginning of their life until the moment of natural death. In fact, it is in the more difficult and disturbing situations that the dignity and grandeur of the human being emerges. The wounded humanity of the disabled challenges us to recognize, accept and promote in each one of these brothers and sisters of ours the incomparable value of the human being created by God.3 Paradoxically, in some respects our society has made considerable progress in recognizing, accepting, and promoting the equality of persons with disabilities. Likewise, medical science has found cures for, or at least ways to alleviate, some handicaps, so persons with disabilities can live out their lives as fully as possible while making extraordinary contributions to society.
