HIV corner
Whether you are living with HIV or not, when you use alcohol, it weakens your body. If you are on Anti Retrivirals (ARVs) and drink alcohol, the medicine will not work well. Alcohol damages the liver. When the liver is damaged, it will not do its work well. Alcohol reduces the cells which fight against HIV, leading to low body immunity. When this happens, the body cannot fight against infections. Also, alcohol over works the kidneys. When the liver and kidneys fail to work, you may die. Alcohol makes you not to think well. This may lead you to have sex with different sexual partners. This puts you at risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases. If you are already on ARVs, you may forget to take your the medicine in time, which may cause serious problems. Alcohol does not weaken the HIV virus. The virus is always awake and active in the body of a person living with HIV in the body fluids like blood, vaginal fluids, semen and breastmilk. Dr Stephen Watiti and Dr Agolor Curthbert, Mildmay Center, Kampala

Only urine and semen should come out of your penis. One of the ways semen is released from the body is through wet dreams. Most boys have wet dreams, when they are asleep. Wet dreams happen during adolescent stage. When boys wake up, they find a milky substance on their underwear or bed sheets. A wet dream may be confusing for the first time. You may think you have urinated on your bed, this is

Vaginal discharge
A vaginal discharge may be normal or abnormal.

Normal discharge:

Is clear or whitish in colour. Has a mild smell. It is sticky. It may flow out on some days and fail on other days.

Abnormal discharge:

Your vagina has micro-organisms like bacteria and yeast that naturally live there. They protect you from infection. When you notice; extra discharge, yellowish, greenish, grayish, a bad smell, a rash or vaginal burning during urination. Talk to a health worker for treatment immediately.

My mother got married to another man. I stay with my grandparents. They cant pay my fees. How can I find her? Achiru Kevina, 11, P5, Kyanjuki PS, Kasese Sorry Kevina. Talk to your grandparents, aunties or uncles. They may know where she is or at least they will try to find her. Talk to your teacher, trusted elder, religious leaders or the LC in your village or Probation officer from your District. These people are responsible for protecting and helping children. They might find someone to help you pay your fees. Do not give up, try until you get helped. If a girl is raped and immediately washes her vagina, can she get HIV? Nakitende Winfred, 13, Kikondo PS, Mpigi Yes, a girld can get HIV and if she is already infected she can pass on the virus to the boy. This happens immediately. HIV is found in body fluids like blood, semen and vaginal fluids. Sex is the biggest way in which HIV spreads. Winfred, do you know anyone who was raped? If anyone

Focusing on studies makes our lives safe. We advise young people to report any bad behaviour. - Troas, PS, Jinja is raped, tell them to immediately go to the nearest health center and ask for PEP. PEP is medicine given to people who are raped. PEP stops the virus from multiplying in the body. PEP must be given within three days, from the time of rape. If someone already has HIV, PEP cannot work, because the virus will have already entered your body and multiplied. My friend said if I apply shoe polish on pimples, they get cured. Is that

okay? N. Atim Madera Girls PS, Soroti No Atim, never put shoe polish on your skin. Shoe polish does not have medicine to cure pimples. The polish is made of strong chemicals that may affect your skin. Shoe polish is for cleaning shoes. Do not squeeze, scrub or rub pimples. Wash your face twice a day using soap and clean water every day to control pimples. If this fails, see a doctor. Pimples come during teenage. They are caused by hormones in the body. Hormones are body messengers, they tell your body when and how to grow. Dont worry, pimples go away after sometime. I have repeated P4 four times. My parents want to send me away from home if I repeat the same class. Amoko Natal, Logoba PS, Moyo Dear Natal, it is painful to keep repeating while your freinds are promoted to other classes. Do you have enough time to do homework? Do you get enough sleep? Are you overworked? Do you attend all the lessons? Do you revise your books? If any of these problems is affecting your studies, share them with your teachers and parents. What else do you enjoy doing besides studying. Are you good at sports? Talk to your teachers and parents to find out how you can be helped in areas where you have interest and can do well. Counsellors: Dr Alex Kakoraki, Murchsion Bay Hospital, Kampala

We are happy to be at school. We advise young people to work hard for their future. Pupils of Kitwe Mother care PS, Ntungamo

QUIZ

The long holiday is coming. Tell us how you will stay safe during the holiday?

Science Corner
Can Gonorrhea be cured? Musaasizi Cornelious, 14, P7 Trevor, St zoe Day $ Boarding PS, Mubende Yes Cornelious, gonorrhea can be cured if a person infected takes the drugs as directed by the doctor. Gonorrhea is one of the diseases got through sex. It is caused by bacteria. Do you know anyone with Gonorrhea? Ask them to go to the nearest health center or hospital for treatment. In a boy, the symptoms start two days after sex. Boys feel a burning pain while urinating, and pus may come out. There may be pain in the testes, and one may feel high temperatures. It can infect the urethra, rectum and the throat. It is possible to have gorrnohea without symptoms. Boys are more likely to show symptoms than girls. In a girl, gorrnohea makes the fallopian tubes to swell and she feels pain in the cervix, stomach and backache. If not treated in time, it can cause infertility in both boys and girls. To stay safe, say No to early sex. Sex will expose you to STDs/ HIV. Dr Paul Semugoma, International Hospital, Kampala.
