OCTOBER 23, 2011

THOUGHTS ON THE WAY UP MOUNT CARMEL Many thanks to Brenda Pasko for organizing our public recitation of the Rosary last weekend. Even though the weather was pretty bad and we had to move inside, we appreciate the time spent organizing and the parishioners who prayed together for ourselves, our parish and our country. Our RCIA program is underway. Our first meeting was last week and our second is this Wednesday in the rectory. Even though we already have five participants, it is still possible to join us and learn more about the Catholic faith. We look forward to the Easter Vigil when our catechumens and candidates will receive the Sacraments of Initiation. This weekend, I am preaching at all the Masses on the new translation of the Roman Missal. You have probably already noticed a few of the upcoming changes as we are beginning to use the new Mass settings that the Liturgy Committee chose under the direction of Gabe Borrero, our Music Minister. We have also prepared laminated pew cards to help make the new responses and prayers easier to remember. Our new translation is an effort to be more faithful to the actual Latin wording and to make some of the phrasing more formal and more poetic. We have become a more informal culture in recent years, but there is a place for formality at special times and places. Church and the Eucharist certainly qualify among those times and places. As I told the Pre-School children this past week during their tour of church in preparation for attending their first School Mass, there are some things that we do to show respect and help us recognize the importance of people we meet and places we attend. Standing during the reading of the Gospel and at the entrance and departure of the celebrant and attending ministers are also ways of recognizing the special nature of the Mass and being in church. The bowing and genuflection as we enter our pew or the sanctuary also remind us of where we are. So, the language we use and the way we talk about God, the Eucharist and the Sacraments are ways of reminding ourselves of the difference between ordinary conversation and participation in the Mass. Perhaps the changes in the words we use so often at Mass will aid us in our awareness of the extraordinary gift that is the Eucharist and help us prepare better for our receiving the Lord in Holy Communion. It may take us a while to get used to the changes. But, as I have mentioned many times in other contexts, sometimes forcing us to change our routines (like pews) can help us pay better to attention to what we are really saying when we pray. And, better attention at prayer is certainly a good thing! And, speaking of the Mass, I am hoping that others will choose to join those who have already responded to last weeks bulletin flyer on the need for ministers to assist at Mass. Please consider serving the Lord and our parish by volunteering as a lector, Eucharistic Minister, or usher. As I mentioned earlier, we seem to have very little problem in getting our children to volunteer as Altar Servers. Its the adults we need more of! What was that line in the Gospel??? Out of the mouths of children, . . .or something like that. And, thanks to those who already serve the parish in so many ways. Have a wonderful week! Fr. Ray SWIM TEAM MAKING WAVES SOON Any OLMC or Religious Ed student who is interested in swimming this year should attend the meeting in the Multi-Purpose Room on Tuesday, October 25 at 6:00 p.m. Questions?? Contact Amber Lutterbaugh at 825-7022.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION All classes are in session this week, including Confirmation. We need you to cover our kids with prayer! The Confirmation years are special and at times trying years for our teens. Here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, we would like to pair each Confirmation student with a prayer sponsor from the congregation. This can be an individual, couple or family who is willing to keep the student in their prayers and also, send notes and cards roughly once a month to let them know the congregation is supporting them through their journey. If you would be willing to give your time to this important ministry, please take an envelope in the vestibule near the poster of Confirmation students and you will be contacted very soon with your students name and address. We have 38 young people in our Confirmation class this year that need our support and prayer as a community and parish. Peace in Christ Jesus - Sue Berdis, REL .WINTER CLOTHING DRIVE Erie winters can be brutal and winter comes very early - especially for refugees. They have no way to be prepared for our winters! Catholic Charities & Adoption Service Refugee Resettlement (CCCAS) is conducting a Warm Clothing Drive (not to be confused with Community Outreach Group winter coat drive in November) at the parish for the next two weeks. Please bring your gently-worn winter coats, boots, gloves, hats and sweaters only to the church sometime in the next two weeks. Place your donated items in the clothing drive container located in the vestibule. If possible, please help us further by placing your clean, foldable items in individual, clear plastic bags with size and gender marked on the outside of the bag! Thank you. BEREAVEMENT COMMITTEE The Bereavement Committee is in need of volunteers to work at the funeral luncheons. We could use at least 8 people (2 groups of 4) to help lighten the load of those who work most our luncheons. This ministry is very important to our parish and it is one that is very rewarding and gives a lot of comfort to the families at a time of their grieving. It is a ministry that is well received and appreciated but also one that is stressful because of the need to ask the same people over and over to volunteer. Please consider volunteering to work at these luncheons. Our response is going to determine if we can continue to provide this service to our parishioners. Also, if you can volunteer to make a dish, that would be helpful as well. Please contact Brenda Pasko at 825-6536. Villa Maria Academy Open House.will be held next Sunday, October 30 from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. Guided tours of the school will include classroom demonstrations, a look at the newly renovated gym, auditorium, new fitness center, academic curriculum and will feature the wireless Tablet PC Program. Applications will be available. Students in attendance will be entered in a drawing for discounts on tuition. Phone 838-2061, ext 3239 if you have question. Villa Maria Academy is located at 2403 West 8th St in Erie.
