Circulation and Respiration Working Together

Name _______________________________
Objectives: In order for our bodies to remain healthy and strong, all of the organ systems need to work
together. In todays lab, students will examine how the circulatory system and respiratory systems work
together to keep you healthy.
Part I: Pre lab Questions: Think/Pair/ Share with a group member and write the answers using
appropriate vocabulary.
1.
Everybody breathes all day, every day. Why?

Procedure:
1.
Find your pulse either on your wrist or on your neck. The pulse can be found just above
the point where the tendon enters the wrist. NOTE: Do not use your thumb or index finger to
find your pulse since they both have a strong pulse of their own.

3.
4.

2.
Using a clock or watch, take your pulse for one minute.
Repeat step 2 three more times and average your results.
Continue this process for each of the activities described in your lab.

Reflections:
1.
Graph the average number of heartbeats for each activity. What would be the best type
of graph to use to represent this data? Why?

What does the graph tell you?

3.

What is the relationship between physical activity and your heart rate? _______

4.
If you rested for 30 minutes after jumping jacks, would you expect the pulse rate on the graph to
ever be zero? Why?

The average adult has about five liters of blood living inside of their body, coursing through their vessels,
delivering essential elements, and removing harmful wastes. Without blood, the human body would stop
working.
Blood contains three different types of cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen and nutrients to the body. White
blood cells are responsible for fighting disease and platelets help blood clot.

8. What are the three types of blood cells that are being pumped throughout the circulatory system? What do
they do?
