The manlift is an important piece of equipment in our industry. When used properly it is a very useful and laborsaving tool. However, when manlift safety rules are ignored, problems can occur. In general, the gates must be self-closing (not tied open). The manlift entrance and exit platforms must be dry and free of clutter. The manlift should be used only to carry people. The manlift should never be used to carry tools, equipment, materials, or supplies. The entire manlift must be inspected at least monthly.

Inspection Procedures
Make sure all warning signs are in place. Keep operations to authorized personnel only. Keep all warning and advisory signs neat, clean, and legible.
Electric Manlift
Make sure outside warning bells and alarm systems are working properly.
Electric Manlift
If the shaft-way is illuminated, make sure all light globes, conduit connections, and light bulbs are in good condition.
Electric Manlift
Make sure all inside doors are working properly and making contact with the limit switches that will not let the car move if the door is not closed all of the way.
Electric Manlift
Some door safety limit switches are under the car itself and activated by the hinge of the bi-fold door on the car
Electric Manlift
Check outside door latches and make sure the outside doors are closing properly so the inter-lock mechanism at each floor level is functioning properly. If all floor level latches are working properly the car will not move if a door is open.
Electric Manlift
All roller safety switches at all levels must be checked for proper operation to ensure interlocking door system.
Electric Manlift
Respect all capacity limits of the manlift. Manlifts are designed to carry personnel to and from upper work floors. Manlifts are NOT freight elevators.
Electric Manlift
Inspect all cable clamps for tightness. Inspect the clamps for the cable attachment on the top of the car and the cable attachment to the I-bolt on the counter weight. All clamps should be of the offset stud types not the typical u-bolt style clamps.

Electric Manlift
Inspect the counter weight cable connections as well as the I-bolt that is attached to the counter weight.

Electric Manlift
Inspect the under carriage of the car making sure all electrical connections to the junction box are tight and not cracked or broken. Make sure the electrical power cord is traveling in the correct position when moving up or down and not rubbing on the framework creating a bare spot. Check the car guides on the rail for tightness and wear.

The person that checks the head pulley area should also check all of the electrical connections, limit switches, bearing supports, pulley wear, and guards, etc.
Inspect the top drive sheave for condition of the cable grooves. Look for wear spots that could damage cable during travel
Inspect the set screws in the center shaft of the drive pulley to make sure they are tight

Electric Manlift
Make sure all electrical connections are tight and secure. If there is an on/off switch at the top of the manlift, check for proper operation.
Inspect the governing brake to make sure it is clean and operable. The actual test of the governing brake should be done by a qualified person as not to damage the braking unit.
