This is not a step-by-step how to. and most importantly. To overcome the fear of not being able to move forward. it's coming straight from inside my head. However. they managed to get from this person in London. which is a shame. I’m pretty sure we've all done that. you're a filmmaker. or failed to take part in an activity that you wish you would have taken part in? How about a more long-term view? Let’s say you dwell on something that's happened in the past that you wish you'd done differently. earning a couple of thousand pounds a month. and I think it's really important that a filmmaker can understand when. or anything relating to missed opportunities. myself included. and how to take advantage of it. to the other person living in the mountains in a far off country with his animals in seven jumps. Have you ever woken up one day and realized that you totally missed a great opportunity the night before? Maybe it was a promotion. instead.Sound Familiar? ‘It's not what you know. Whether this theory is dead accurate or not. and you should take a little bit of time out to see this. but have you ever pondered where you might be if you'd just gone for it and taken up the offer. Let me explain. Now. no matter where they are. looking at the present. or someone you wish you'd met when you had the chance. Through research and a little bit of juggling here and there. which we can't do without first being able to spot the potential that arises from particular situations. but who you know’. I'm big on making contacts and creating mutual business partnerships with other filmmakers and people in the film industry that benefit both parties. or gone ahead with your idea? This is something that I like to look out for in the filmmaking world and turn it on its head. because we'd all have exactly what we wanted already if we helped each other out a little more. opportunities are indeed out there. is connected and knows you through a chain of seven people. and you'll immediately notice that they aren't as far away as you might think. I rarely see anyone actually make this effort consistently and on a long term basis. My first point here is a very important one. and picked out a person in the London area to test this. Delving into a little bit of reasoning before we get started let me ask you a quick question. Imagine the room you're sitting in is painted pure white from top to bottom. Each one has ten times more promotion power. looking for advice. Imagine this process repeating itself again and again. This is how the big guys out there make things happen.and deals that could catapult you right up there through mutual agreement and benefit could be just one or two conversations away. or whether they give you a small helpful tip. floors and all. Your new business partner could be waiting for you just around the corner and you could meet at any time. until your wall is full. they need to be taken advantage of at every step. this is what I'd tell them. This is you. or purely circumstantial meeting. and they assist each other. get out there and dig them up. If that's not you. all kinds of opportunities. Look at it this way. whether it be an intentional. they make their contacts. If I had five minutes to talk to every single person within the film industry. it's closer than you think and it's waiting for someone to pick up and take it to the next level. All the questions you ask yourself before buying something about the person that's selling to you and the project itself need to be answered and answered well. The major point I'm trying to make here is to understand fully what you're getting yourself into. This is really important for the success of any filmmaker. and the sales letters for new products or services that I read on a daily basis. money-wise. etc. A good filmmaker knows that as well as having a good product (film. Do these guys know that they're supposed to be running a business? Now I don't know how many people go for this to be honest. if you don't like the idea of having to do it yourself. or if not. When you find an answer. So here’s the thing. I don't fancy doing that'. but to listen to the person that doesn't listen to the people making the money. As I mentioned earlier they don't teach you this stuff in college or universities. so don't listen to them. My retort to the gurubashing is. it's time to burn some bridges. Whatever you do don't block it out and put it to the back of your mind figuring that that one small thing that you've left out won't make that much difference. Don’t Listen to the Big Guys… Are You Crazy? Moving on to the next and probably the most worrying part of this report.Avoiding the Dirty Bits Does This Sound Like You? If you find yourself doing this you're doing something wrong. Never constrain yourself to one and work on it constantly over huge periods of time – unless you’re close to being green-lit. We all like something for nothing but there are those people out there who go over the top searching for free deals. your pitch documents and business plans especially. maybe. free sales copy writing and so on. It just doesn't work. but if you want to surpass that you need to expand a little. because it won't get you very far. This comes in many forms but I want to talk about this in general rather than anything specific as in the other sections. This is all well and good if you want to be making a small micro-budget film. free promotion. Co-productions are one example and you'll be splitting the profits 50/50 (or whatever is appropriate).Like we've already discussed this can be for many reasons. your scripts. mix in a little bit of your expertise and you'll end up making the same amount of cash anyway if things are dead even – possibly (and more likely) more. You will not get anything set up if you're looking for everything that's free. shop around for a good deal if you can. Don't turn into one of those report hoppers. and in the end you're going to end up frustrated. free hosting. That's not to say that you need to go around partnering on every single project that you create but it does mean that you need to think a little more about working in a team wherever possible. and your potential investors will be able to see that too. I highly doubt this applies. let’s say for example you both have the same amount of resources to get your project out and money in through different contacts and other sources. So free stuff. The prettying up the pitch document twelve times a year. move forward quickly. have a look at a few cast and crew. develop those projects. contact those distributors. because quite often you can come home after a hard day’s work and you might be so tired and feel like you got a lot done and moved forward. more important than making any sales. simply because I can’t help but push this and push this because it really is the difference between getting somewhere and not getting anywhere at all. © FilmmakerUK Ltd. Whilst they’re tired and say things like “Wow. productive or profitable at all. gain knowledge and understanding and get real tired doing it and I guarantee you’ll be moving forward at such a fast pace no one will know how you’re doing it. move forward. Avoid it at all costs and you’ll do fine. but learn to differentiate between the two. because there’s no progress. This is reactive maintenance also. pull more leads or more resources? Or are you doing it because it doesn’t quite look as nice as you’d like? Don’t get stuck in the circle of ever improving without moving on. just with a slightly prettier pitch document. It’s important to distinguish between proactive and reactive. and if you remember back to the top ten reasons for success section. more important than resource building or any marketing method anyone can ever teach you. Give it a go. If you sit down at your computer and do your maintenance. What have you achieved so far? Nothing at all. change the colour of your pitch document. when actually all you did was pull out a bit of maintenance. Create those projects.
