Research Project The Secret Services central task from the founding was to oversee counterfeiting of U.S.

This research paper will attempt to answer who the secret service protects, how one becomes a qualified secret service member, and what kind of tasks do they act upon a daily basis. Though the Secret Service werent intended to protect the very important people of this country, they now aid protection to the president, the vice president, the presidentelect, the vice president-elect and their immediate families 27 hours a day, 7 days a week. They also protect former presidents and their spouses for their lifetimes, except when the spouse remarries, says the United States Secret Service. When heads of foreign states or governments, or other distinguished foreigners visit our country, they also get this protection. Secret Service protection is as well given to former presidents and their spouses for their lifetimes while children until the age of 16. Surprisingly, presidential and vice presidential candidates within 120 days of a general presidential election are also protected. The steps to becoming a qualified Secret Service Agent are pretty straightforward. Other mandatory qualifications are being at least 21 and not older than 37 years of age, 20/20 corrective vision, and excellent health. Candidates must pass a report writing test, polygraph examination, an in-depth

interview, entrance exam, and must be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance. After being picked from the many applicants, new Secret Service Agents spend 11 weeks in either Glynco, Georgia or Artesia, New Mexico at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. After completion, these agents spend another 11 weeks at the James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel, Maryland. Many different kinds of agents make up the Secret Service, which means they do different things. A Secret Service Agent is a combination of a police officer, a private detective, bodyguard, electronics and computer master, a small arms expert, a sharpshooter and a crowd control specialist, says Criminal Justice USA. They can read peoples intentions from their body language and facial expressions. They must always be watching for the unexpected and make decisions instantly if necessary. The ones that guard the most important peoples have the same schedule as the people they are protecting, which means traveling with them as well. There are also Secret Service Agents who have more regular workdays, where they involve in such tasks like identity theft, currency counterfeiting, fraud schemes and scams. The Secret Service does many different things involving criminal justice and protection, known for the involvement in U.S. currency counterfeiting and keeping the president from harm. Agents have to go through long training periods and tests such as in Maryland for 3 months. One of their central tasks is to safeguard the president, vice president, and visiting foreign heads. The Secret Service have come a improved throughout the years in presidential protection.
