USE OF THE WILD T16 THEODOLITE I. Placing Instrument on Tripod. A.

Before attempting to pick up the instrument, after it has been attached to the tripod, be certain that the central fixing screw of the tripod is tight. B. Be sure that the tribrach has been centered on the tripod head. C. Check to see that the swivel locking knob is in the DOWN LOCKED position. II. Leveling and Centering the Instrument over a Point. A. Adjust the tripod legs so that the instrument will be at a comfortable height. B. Adjust the tripod leg position to make the optical plummet cross hairs is within 1/2" of the point without moving the instrument on the tripod head. Observe from the optical plummet, if the point is not visible, leave one leg in the ground, lift the other two legs, and rotate the instrument, all the while looking through the optical plumb sight. When the point is sighted, carefully lower the two legs to the ground, keeping optical plummet cross hairs is within 1/2" of the station point without moving the instrument on the tripod head. C. Traverse the instrument to make sure that the plate is level to the eye. Level the theodolite circular bubble by adjusting the tripod legs up or down. This is accomplished by nothing which leg, when slid up or down, will move the circular bubble into the bull's-eye. Upon adjusting the leg, the bubble will either move into the circle (the instrument is level), or it will slide around until it is exactly opposite another tripod leg. That leg would then be adjusted up or down until the bubble moved into the circle. If the bubble does not move into the circle, adjust the leg until the bubble is directly opposite another leg and repeat the process. If this manipulation has been done correctly, the bubble will be centered after the second leg has been adjusted; it is seldom necessary to adjust the legs more than three times. Comfort can be taken from the fact that these manipulations take less time to perform than they do to read about. REMEMBER: DO NOT TURN LEVELING SCREW, ADJUST TRIPOD LEG ONLY. D. Repeat steps B. and C. as necessary. E. Level the instrument approximately by centering the circular bubble with the footscrews, remembering that the bubble moves in the direction of the left thumb. See the sketch below.

F. Protect the plate bubble from the direct rays of the sun. G. With the horizontal motion of the instrument loose, set the optical plummet over a footscrew. Rotate the other two footscrews, in opposite directions, until the plate level bubble is centered. The bubble moves in the direction of the left thumb. H. Rotate the instrument 90 clockwise about its vertical axis and again center the plate level bubble. Only now use only the one footscrew over which the optical plummet had been set. I. Again rotate the instrument 90 clockwise. It will again be parallel to the first set of footscrews. If the bubble does not remain centered, bring it back halfway.

J. Again rotate the instrument 90 clockwise. If necessary, bring the plate level bubble back halfway by moving the same single footscrew as in H. See the sketch below.

K. The plate level bubble should now remain in the same position the through 360. This position is the central position for the plate bubble. L. Turn the eyepiece of the optical plummet until the cross hairs is in focus. Pullout or push in the eyepiece of the optical plummet until the point on the ground is in focus. M. Loosen the tripod fixing screw just enough so that the instrument can be moved over the tripod plate until the plummet cross hairs coincide with the point on the ground. Tighten the fixing screw. N. Check the optical plummet to make sure that the instrument is still over the point. If necessary, recenter and relevel. III. Measuring Horizontal Angles. A. Open and turn the mirror until you have optimal illumination. Turn the eyepiece of the reading microscope until the vertical and horizontal scales are in sharp focus. B. Set the clockwise circle to zero, and make certain that the horizontal circle clamp is depressed to lock the reading. (Use Horizontal Tangent Screw to adjust to exact 0). Aim on the left target A with the vertical cross-hair, use the horizontal clamping screw to lock the horizontal movement. Now you will have reading 0 on target A and with horizontal movement locked. Raise the circle locking clamp to unlock the reading first, then release horizontal movement. Move to the right target B, aim it careful, and get the 1st angle reading. C. Press down the circle clamp to lock the reading, reverse the telescope 180 degree, aim to the previous left target A, release the circle clamp, move the telescope to the right target B, get the 2nd angle reading .

D. Horizontal angles will be measured by repetition. The most important procedure to eliminate instrumental errors is called "double centering" which consists of measuring angles direct and reversed. E. Instrument Operations to remember. 1. When the LOCK is DOWN the scales do not move. 2. When the LOCK is UP all the scales move. 3. The bottom horizontal scale reads CLOCKWISE. The optical scale interval is 1 minute (1') and estimation can be made to 10".
