1. View the whole news programme and select one item you would like to understand better. 2. If possible, read up on the subject in newspapers, on teletext or on the Internet. Gather essential vocabulary and background information. In particular, find out how the names are pronounced. 3. View your chosen news item again. Make a list of all the names. Study the pictures, the 'quotations' from interviews and the graphics and see how much you can understand. 4. Go back to the news lead (the short introduction spoken in the studio). This summarizes the item and gives a good idea of its content. 5. View the rest of the news item several times, trying to understand the words. If you don't understand everything, try some of these: find places where the words match the pictures and write down the words identify the people who are interviewed take down a 'quotation' as dictation collect details under the headings Who, What, When, Where, and Why

6. Once you have understood the words quite well, you need to grasp the whole picture and try to explain what has happened. Do Character network or turn down the sound and talk through the pictures, explaining them to yourself. Limit the number of caracters for oral presentation of the news item. 7. For language study, do Choose your words for useful expressions or Tenses (looking for passives and continuous forms, and the sequence of present perfect, past, present and future). 8. Write an account of the news item. Explain briefly what has happened, why you chose this item, why it is interesting/ significant, what questions it raises and how the situation might develop in future. 9. Adjust the text of your presentation linguistically (grammar structures, vocabulary, length of sentences) so that it is easy for your classmates to follow. 10. Present the item in class.
