OCTOBER 27, 2011 The Disability Rights Legal Center (DRLC) whose mission is to champion the rights of people with disabilities through education, advocacy and litigation, holds its annual Franklin D. Roosevelt Dinner on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the Omni Hotel, 251 South Olive Street in downtown Los Angeles. Silent auction and cocktails begin at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The fundraiser honors distinguished excellence in corporate diversity, health advocacy and efforts towards the promotion of the rights of people with disabilities. Hosted by NBC4s news anchor Jennifer Bjorklund, NBCUniversal underwrites the event and all proceeds benefit the Disability Rights Legal Center. The DRLC bestows three awards including the Corporate Diversity Award which is presented to outstanding companies that have furthered support of corporate missions; the 2011 Charles D. Siegal Presidents Award presented to an individual, group or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the lives of people with disabilities; and the DREAM Award (Disability Rights in Entertainment, Arts & Media) Award which honors an individual or a company in the communications field. The Corporate Diversity Award is awarded to NBCUniversal, one of the worlds leaders in media and entertainment that strives to include disability in all of its diversity effortsfrom their Affinity Groups to their Diversity Council. Diversity can be seen throughout all of NBCUniversals programs and properties. Accepting on behalf of the company is Craig Robinson, Executive Vice President, Chief Diversity Officer, NBCUniversal. This years Charles D. Siegal Presidents Award recipient is Francine R. Kaufman, M.D. Currently Dr. Kaufman serves as the Chief Medical Officer and Vice President Global Medical, Clinical & Health Affairs at Medtronic Diabetes, Distinguished Professor Emerita of Pediatrics and Communications at USC and is a physician at The Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. A past president of the American Diabetes Association, Dr. Kaufman receives the award for her continuing advocacy for children and adults with diabetes so that they fully participate at school, work and play. Dr. Kaufmans advocacy on behalf of children with insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes resonates deeply with the DRLCs mission. The DRLC filed an amicus brief in 2011 to the Supreme Court of California in the pending American Nurses Association v. OConnell, et. al., stating that the refusal of allowing trained school personnel to administer medication when a nurse is unavailable denies students with disabilities their constitutionally protected right to a free and non-discriminatory education. For public service and advocacy efforts, the DREAM Award will be presented to Nick Jonas, the singersongwriter, musician and actor best known as one of the Jonas Brothers and for the hit song A Little Bit Longer, about his personal struggle with type 1 diabetes. whatever struggle is going on in their own life, says Jonas, who was diagnosed at age 13 in 2005. Jonas strongly believes in the rights of people with all types of disabilities and advocates for increased health related research and government funding. Our distinguished honorees are recognized for their commitment to civil justice for people with disabilities, says the DRLCs Executive Director Paula Pearlman, Esq. Every day, children and adults face unnecessary challenges due to having diabetes. The Americans with Disabilities Act and recent amendments make it clear that these challenges that may involve health and wellbeing, housing, public access, education and employment are simply unacceptable in todays society. It is a privilege for the Disability Rights Legal Center to recognize these influential advocates. The DRLC continues to advocate for people with disabilities to participate fully in education, housing, healthcare, recreation and other activities that many in the non-disabled community take for granted. In addition to the celebratory dinner, awards presentation and video tributes, actor Michael Bonnabel will perform an excerpt from The Good Boy, an autobiographical solo performance piece about being raised by deaf parentsthough he could hear. With the support of the Franklin D. Roosevelt family, the DRLC inaugurates its annual fundraisers new name and acknowledges the personal role that the 32nd President played in the history of disability rights in America.
