GRAND RAPIDS The State His-

igan State Housing Development Au-
thority, will hold a workshop in Grand
Rapids, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday,
Nov. 17, at the Womens City Club, 254
East Fulton St. The workshop, which is
free and open to the public, will be facil-
itated by Alan Levy and Kristine Kidorf
of Goaltrac, Inc. Refreshments will be
provided.
Since 1927 the Womens City Club
has been located in the Martin Sweet
House, a two-story Italianate Villa built
in the 1860s.
Grand Rapids is proof of how the
rehabilitation of historic buildings con-
tributes to vibrant communities. We are
offering workshop participants an op-
portunity to meet with others who are
interested in preserving our history and
to discuss the future of historic preser-
vation in this state, said State Historic
Preservation Officer Brian Conway.
Public input that we gather at this
workshop will help shape the preserva-
tion agenda for the next five years.
Similar discussions have taken place
around the state in Kalamazoo, Midland,
Traverse City, and Detroit. The work-
shops give Michigan residents a chance
to share their vision for historic preser-
vation in Michigan, identify the threats
and opportunities facing Michigans his-
toric resources, and set the direction for
historic preservation activities through-
out the state for the next five years.
There is no charge for the workshop,
however, registration is required. Visit

Senate votes to keep popular
potatoes in kids school lunches
Potatoes have been rescued for school lunches,
thanks to Senate passage Oct. 18 of an appropria-
tions amendment to prevent the U.S. Department
of Agriculture (USDA) from putting limits on pota-
to servings in the National School Lunch Program
(NSLP).
Were gratifed at this development, said Ben
Kudwa, executive director of the Michigan Potato
Industry Commission, a grower-funded promo-
tional and research-support organization. Pota-
toes have been a staple in human diets for at least
6,000 years. Theres no reason why they should
be restricted in school lunches, especially since
theyre so popular with the children.
The focus of contention is a proposed USDA
rule that would cap usage of starchy vegetables
at one cup per week per student in the NSLP. Veg-
etables like potatoes, corn and peas would vie for
inclusion in that one-cup limit. The USDA wants
menus to include a greater quantity of other veg-
etables as well as more fruit.
We heard from school foodservice directors
who were troubled by this proposal, Kudwa said.
Potatoes are so popular because theyre so versa-
tile. They can be prepared in so many ways and in
combination with so many foods including other
vegetables. This rule would put a crimp on the
foodservice directors ability to satisfy their cus-
tomers, the students.
The USDA was contacted by many of these di-
rectors and their professional organizations. Re-
portedly well over 100,000 comments fooded in
to the agency.
Everybody agrees with the USDAs intent,
which is to improve the nutritional values of school
lunches, Kudwa said. The problem is the details.

Carbon monoxide safety and
awareness week seeks to
educate, prevent tragedies
JACKSON The deaths
last week of a Corunna couple
vacationing at their cottage in
the Upper Peninsula because
of suspected carbon monoxide
(CO) poisoning is a tragic re-
minder of the importance of the
dangers of exposure to this toxic
gas.
To help increase awareness
of CO, its signs, symptoms and
how to prevent it, Consumers
Energy and Governor Rick Sny-
der have partnered to declare
October 24-30 as Carbon Mon-
oxide Safety and Awareness
Week in Michigan.
Often referred to as the
silent killer, CO is colorless,
odorless and tasteless and can
be produced when home appli-
ances arent operating or vent-
ing properly.
Typically we see most car-
bon monoxide poisonings oc-
cur during the fall and winter
heating season when furnaces
are operating and homes are
closed up, said Doug Detter-
man, manager of customer care
for Consumers Energy. Thats
why we continue to share infor-
mation with our customers and

Reader: Thank you to
the community
TO THE EDITOR:
I would like to thank the 40 business men and women who
supported us by placing the full page ad in the River Valley Shop-
per. Since then I have had 10 more businesses stop in to donate
for future ads and to show their support. I also have a lot of citi-
zens coming in and sharing their experiences with the township
board and none of them are positive. Thank you and I certainly
do appreciate all the support.
This has been a very trying time for my family and we really
appreciate knowing the community stands for us and wants to
see changes made in this community.
As you have noticed, there are a lot of citizens that also need
your support in making this a better township to live and to do
business, as is evident by the numerous letters to the editor. We
all need to take a stand and support one another for such chang-
es to take effect. Thank you again for showing such wonderful
support.

beneft sing will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov.
4, at the Sand Lake United Methodist Church. The
church is located at 65 Maple St. on the north side of
the park in downtown Sand Lake.

showcased and refreshments will follow the show.
A freewill offering will be taken in support of the
general operating fund for Helping Hands. Fred C.
Plath, Treasurer of Helping Hands has indicated
that demand for food is at record levels and todays
challenging economic times have also impacted do-
nations to Helping Hands. Please come out and sup-
port a very important community outreach.
Helping Hands is also excited to report that the
frst year with its community garden project was a
great success. The community garden produced
more than 4,000 pounds of food that were given out
to clients being served by the Helping Hands out-
reach ministry. Deb Dexter, the Helping Hands min-
istry services coordinator, did a great job enlisting
help from many area churches and youth groups to
work in the garden, plant, weed, and harvest. Help-
ing Hands looks forward to how much more the
community garden project will fourish next in 2012
and beyond.
Helping Hands also continues to make steady
progress in its building fund. They are now approach-
ing $25,000 in this fund with the goal of reaching a
$150,000 level to construct a new facility.
Plath said that Gods faithfulness, and the faith-
fulness of the entire community in supporting the
Helping Hands ministry is always an amazing thing
to think about. Donations to the general operating
fund, or the building fund, for Helping Hands can
be made to PO Box 532, Howard City, MI 49329.

Newman completes
leadership training
SIDNEY Montcalm Community College Dean
of Student Services Denise Newman recently gradu-
ated from the Academy for Leadership and Develop-
ment.
The program was developed
by the Chair Academy, a divi-
sion of the Maricopa Commu-
nity College District in Mesa,
Ariz., for the purpose of ad-
vancing organizational leader-
ship and providing succession
planning for leaders in post-
secondary institutions.
Newman said the program
helped her to become a stron-
ger leader.
We learned to appreciate and value others
through team-building exercises, understanding be-
havioral styles and identifying strengths, she said.
Creating strategic plans, being forward thinking
and innovative were key concepts we addressed. Ef-
fective transformational leadership skills and imple-
mentation of these skills was woven into everything
we did.
The Academy is a year-long program. It includes
an initial week of on-site training, a practicum ex-
perience involving implementation of an individu-
alized professional development plan focusing on
the application of skills learned during training, a
mentor and coaching program, and a fnal week of
on-site training consisting of additional leadership
issues.
Completing this program has provided Dr.
Newman with new insights into leadership at the
community college level, which will beneft our stu-
dents and colleagues, said MCC President Bob Fer-
rentino.

LANSING State Fire Mar-
shal Ronald R. Farr today en-
courages families to take a few
simple safety precautions to
reduce fre risk and avoid burn
injuries during Halloween where
hidden dangers also come in dis-
guise.
On Halloween theres a sig-
nifcant increase in home fres
and burn-related injuries most
commonly caused by candles
igniting costumes and decora-
tions, said Farr. Make sure the
costumes are fame-resistant
and will not ignite easily. Dont
use candles to decorate inside or
outside the home, and do have
smoke alarms.
Halloween is the ffth highest
day of the year for candle fres ac-
cording to the National Fire Pro-
tection Association (NFPA). For
safety sake, choose alternatives
to burning candles by using fash-
lights, battery-operated candles
or electric lights. Use fashlights
in pumpkins rather than candles
and keep holiday decorations,
such as dried cornstalks, away
from heat and open fames.
Decorations are the frst
thing to ignite in more than
1,000 reported home fres each
year on Halloween and more
than half are started by candles,
said Farr.
Tell children to stay away
from open fames, especially
candles and jack-o-lanterns that
may be on steps and porches
their costumes could catch fre
if they get too close. Kids should
never carry lit candles, jack-o-
lanterns or high heat or faming
decorations which also could
easily ignite costumes. Always
use a fashlight, fameless candle,
or light stick.
Each year, frefghters and
paramedics deal with an in-
creasing number of incidents
on Halloween that can easily be
prevented. Here are some tips to
avoid frightful fre hazards:
n Buy only costumes, fabric
and accessories labeled fame-re-
sistant or fame-retardant made
with material that wont easily
ignite if exposed to heat or fame
and will extinguish more readily.
n Avoid baggy, billowing or
oversized costumes that are dan-
gerous around lit candles or open
fames.
n Avoid masks and over-the-
head costumes which can impede
vision or make removal diffcult
in the event of fre; use face paint
or make-up instead.
n Be sure children know how
to stop, drop and roll if their
clothing catches fre to smother
spreading fames. Have them
practice stopping immediately,
dropping to the ground, covering
their face with hands, and rolling
over and over to put the fames
out.
n Tell kids to let you know
right away if they see other kids
playing with matches or lighters.
n Use only decorative lights
that have been tested and certi-
fed for safety. Check lights, new
or old, for broken or cracked
sockets, frayed or bare wires, or
loose connections. Discard dam-
aged sets.
n Dont overload electrical
outlets or extension cords with
holiday lighting or special ef-
fects.
n Have working smoke
alarms in the home and set up a
home fre escape route.
n Keep exits clear of decora-
tions, so nothing blocks escape
routes.
Keeping children safe while
trick-or-treating is one of great-
est concerns to Fire/EMS de-
partment personnel. Chil-
dren should always go
trick-or-treating with a
responsible adult. Re-
mind children to stay
together as a group
and walk from house
to house. Review how
to cross a street with
your child. Look left,
right, and left again
to be sure no cars are
approaching before cross-
ing the street.
Parents should warn
their children not to eat any
of their treats before they get
home where it can be exam-
ined by an adult. All candy
should be inspected to ensure
that it is safely sealed and has
not been tampered with. Fruit
should be sliced into small
pieces and checked for foreign
objects. If in doubt, throw it out.
Keep small pieces of candy away
from infants and very small chil-
dren, as they can easily become
lodged in the throat and cause
choking.
The Bureau of Fire Services
wishes all a happy, fre-safe
Halloween. Visit the Bureau of
Fire Services website at www.
michigan.gov/bfs for more fre
safety information.

Potatoes contribute fber and potassium,
which are both important for the young. If
the children dont eat the healthful alter-
natives, the nutritional benefts are zero.
Many directors are concerned about plate
waste in times when budgets are so tight.
Potatoes reduce costs and reduce waste.
He noted that a University of Wash-
ington study showed that when potatoes
are on school menus, consumption of
other vegetables actually increases.
A squeeze against the French fry would
result under the USDA proposals, but it
has long been fading anyway. The term is
becoming a misnomer in school lunches,
Kudwa said, explaining that the new way
of preparing long potato cuts is oven-bak-
ing them. A survey of school foodservice
directors conducted for the National Po-
tato Council, a Washington, DC-based
trade group, showed that 89 percent of
the schools dont even have deep fryers
any more. You cant call a baked form of
potato a French fry, he added.

each year more than 500 people na-
tionwide die from accidental carbon mon-
oxide poisoning, while more than 15,000
are treated at hospitals through the U.S.
for accidental exposure to Co, according
to the Centers For Disease Control.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is caused
by the incomplete combustion of fuels
including natural gas, oil, propane, coal,
wood, kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel and
charcoal. Faulty or inadequately vented
appliances that use these fuels such as
furnaces, freplaces, wood stoves, kero-
sene heaters as well as gasoline-powered
vehicles and home generators can produce
deadly amounts of carbon monoxide.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poi-
soning often mimic the fu, and include
headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness,
stinging or burning of the eyes. Higher
concentrations can result in unconscious-
ness, coma and death. Small children, the
elderly and pets are particularly suscep-
tible to Co.
The best way to protect against carbon
monoxide problems is to purchase and
install an audible carbon monoxide alarm
approved by the Underwriters Labora-
tory. This alarm will sound if dangerous
levels of carbon monoxide are present in
a home or building. If only one Co alarm
is installed in a home, it is recommended
it be installed near sleeping quarters, as
many poisonings take place when people
are sleeping.
Consumers energy sells a Nighthawk
brand Co alarm that features an extended
seven-year warranty as well as the Co Pro-
tection Plan, which offers free response
from the utility if the alarm sounds.
Another way to protect again Co poi-
soning is to make sure all fuel-burning
appliances are properly installed and
maintained. Furnaces should be cleaned
and inspected annually by a qualifed ser-
vice technician. Venting on furnaces, wa-
ter heaters and chimneys also should be
inspected periodically to be sure that they
are free of animal nests or other debris
that could block proper ventilation.

ers energy Nighthawk brand Co alarms,

(MDArD) offcials today reminded all
parents and guardians of their right to
be notifed prior to the use of pesticides
on school and licensed daycare center
property and the need for school offcials
to implement an integrated pest manage-
ment (IPM) program if pesticide applica-
tions are made indoors at these facilities.
IPM uses all suitable techniques in
a total management system to prevent
pests from reaching unacceptable levels
or to reduce existing pest populations to
acceptable levels.
one of the main objectives of IPM
is to reduce any potential risk of pes-
ticide exposure to children attending
Michigans schools and licensed daycare
centers, said Gina Alessandri, MDArDs
Pesticide and Plant Pest Management Di-
vision Director. The only pesticides ex-
empted from notifcation are sanitizers,
germicides, disinfectants, antimicrobial
agents, or baits and gels.
The school or licensed day care facility
administrator is responsible for provid-
ing annual, written notifcation of pesti-
cide application information to parents
or guardians. For schools, notifcation
must be provided within 30 days after the
beginning of the school year; for licensed
day care centers, notifcation must be
provided in September.
Schools or daycare centers must pro-
vide a 48-hour advance notice prior to a
pesticide application. Annual notifcation
of pesticide applications shall include des-
ignation of the commonly-used primary
entrances at which posting of pesticide
application information is required. The
notice must be posted at entrance doors,
and then a second notifcation can be
made by one of the following methods:
n Posting in a public, common area
n e-mail
n A telephone call (direct contact with
a parent or guardian or a message record-
ed on an answering machine)
n Providing students with a written
notice to be delivered to the parent or
guardian
n Posting on the schools or daycare
centers website
Parents or guardians also have the
right to request to be notifed by frst-
class U.S. mail. The notifcation must be
postmarked at least three days before the
application.
IPM program and notifcation re-
quirements ensure all Michigans schools
and licensed daycare centers are main-
taining the highest standards for pesti-
cide safety.

Have stuff, will marry. Without a prenuptial
agreement Michigan law will decide who owns
the property that you bring into your marriage
if you separate, die, or divorce. A prenuptial
or premarital agreement, drafted before you
marry, can be used to protect those assets.
Nowadays postnuptial, or marital, agreements
can work as well. And prenup-like agreements
relationship or partner agreements can
protect property brought into a relationship
where the couple partners or pledges for life
but doesnt marry.
What stuff do you list? In the agreement
both parties list the property each owns, and
their debts. The agreement then identies
what rights each person will have in those as-
sets and what obligations theyll each have for
paying separate, and new joint, debts during
the marriage or relationship.
Care about the rst family. When one or
both persons has children from a prior rela-
tionship, there is good reason to protect prop-
erty being brought into a subsequent mar-
riage/relationship. Older newlyweds may
feel that property they acquired while they
were married or partnered to their childrens
other, now-deceased, parent should be saved
for their children, and not become their new
spouses property when they die. A will does
not work. Even with a will, when a married
person dies in Michigan, their spouse has the
right to elect to take against the will, mean-
ing the right to take a substantial portion of a
deceased spouses property regardless of the
spouses will. Only a pre- or post-nup agree-
ment solves the problem. It species who gets
property brought into the marriage, when the
owner dies. Yet it still provides for property
sharing during the new relationship.
Financial issues can be avoided. With or
without children, with or without wealth, with
a prenup a couple can nalize who will pay for
what, when, and with what money. Those writ-
ten decisions will help avoid later arguments
on how to divide property and debts should
they die or divorce, or to govern spousal sup-
port or alimony if there is ever a separation. In
short, couples can protect their property while
they are married or partnered, avoid paying
50% of their spouses debts and losing 50%
of their own property rights if they divorce,
save their pre-marital property for their chil-
dren should they die, and share 100% of the
use of their property without risking its loss
in a breakup.
Avoid imbalance. Mid last-century, prenup-
tial agreements were occasionally used by
men (sorry guys, but you used to earn most
of the money and own most of the stuff) to
take advantage of wives by locking them out
of a property share in the event of divorce.
Prenups involved waivers of certain nancial
benets by the less wealthy spouse, so would-
be brides were pressured to sign them. Times
have changed, but not enough. So be certain to
have a clear, understandable, enforceable, du-
rable, legally sound agreement by having your
attorneys advise you and prepare it. Agree on
your rights, sign on the line, protect your stuff,
live long and happy married lives.

October 31, 2011
The Tri County Area Schools will hold its biennial school election on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. The biennial election will be held to elect
three (3) school board members and to seek renewal of the Non-Homestead Operating Millage.
TCAS is seeking the renewal of the 18 mil operating millage. The existing one-year millage is 18 mills and will expire on December 31, 2011.
The millage request would restore the millage to the statutory 18 mills for 2012 and 2013. A successful vote would not result in a cost increase
to homeowners. Failure to approve this millage renewal would cost TCAS approximately $2,086,580 in revenue that is used for instructional
purposes.
Candidates for the board positions are as follows:
*One (1) six year term, ending December 2017 - Keven Hoisington (incumbent).
*Two (2) three year terms, ending December 2013 - Brett Karhoff (incumbent), and write-in candidate, Jennifer Britten (incumbent).

Come join us the evening November 3 or 4 to nd out who the
notorious Jack the Ripper is in Tri County Theatres performance of
Bloody Jack. The performance is at 5 p.m. on November 3, and 7 p.m. on
November 4 at the high school. Tickets are $5. Bloody Jack is based on the
murders of Jack the Ripper. Join us to discover the mystery of who (which
actor) is Jack. Bloody Jack is written by Tim Kelly and won the Nederland
Playwriting Award.
For three months in 1888 death stalked the gloomy alleyways of a
London slum. Seven women were brutally murdered; the bodies were
horribly mutilated. The murderer was never caught or identied. The
play offers theories. It takes place in the home of Dr. Sargeant. Each
person who comes to visit him is a suspect. In traditional mysteries,
Kelly said, the audience is supposed to guess who. In this play to get the
who, you have to establish the why. Carefully constructing his plot, Kelly
throws suspicion on each character, with the nal revelation coming as a
surprise.

An Open Letter to the Viking Varsity Football Team
You're WINNERS! We're WINNERS!
Although you didn't have a winning season, I myself feel you had a winning
moral victory. Possibly a time or two, you might have had a thought of
quitting. But you didn't and that's your victory.
Adversity builds character. Character creates success and success ows to
the shoulders of responsibility, which all of you young men showed myself
and others. Remember, if this is the greatest trauma you'll ever face in your
life, you'll be lucky. You've all given us a lot of excitement and conversation
on Friday nights. If I was your coach I would be so proud to have each and
every one of you young men on my team. Put this endeavor behind you.
Learn from it. Go on to your next challenge with gusto! As one door closes,
another one opens and what you've learned in the past will make you better
in the future.
I sincerely believe that your family, friends and fans have shared your pain,
but also share admirably in your personal victory. I know I do.
Thanks for hanging in there!!!!!!!

10 Hunting Safety Rules
Agency: Natural Resources
1. Watch that muzzle! Keep it pointed in a safe direction at all times.
2. Treat every rearm with the respect due a loaded gun. It might be, even if you think it
isnt.
3. Be sure of the target and what is in front of it and beyond it. Know the identifying
features of the game you hunt. Make sure you have an adequate backstop --- dont
shoot at a at, hard surface or water.
4. Keep your nger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot. This is the best way to
prevent an accidental discharge.
5. Check your barrel and ammunition. Make sure the barrel and action are clear of ob-
structions and carry only the proper ammunition for your rearm.
6. Unload rearms when not in use. Leave actions open/ carry rearms in cases and
unloaded to and from the shooting area.
7. Point a rearm only at something you intend to shoot. Avoid all horseplay with a gun
8. Dont run, jump or climb with a loaded rearm. Unload a rearm before you climb a
fence or tree, or jump a ditch. Pull a rearm toward you by the butt, not the muzzle.
9. Store rearms and ammunition separately and safely. Store each in secured locations
beyond the reach of children and careless adults.
10. Avoid alcoholic beverages before or during shooting. Also avoid mind- or behavior
altering medicines or drugs.
Hunter Orange Clothing Requirements
Agency: Natural Resources
You may not hunt with any device, or trap with any rearm, on any lands dur-
ing daylight hunting hours from Aug. 15-April 30 unless you wear a hat, cap,
vest, jacket or rain gear of highly visible orange color, commonly referred to
as hunter orange. When hunting in any season with a license that authorizes
the use of a rearm, you must wear hunter orange except as noted below.
During the November rearm deer season, this law applies to all deer hunters,
including those hunting with a bow and arrow. The garment featuring hunter
orange must be the outermost garment and must be visible from all sides.
Camouage orange garments, with 50 percent or more of the surface in hunter
orange, are legal.
Exception: This law does not apply to those hunting waterfowl, crow or wild
turkey, or thoe engaged in the sport of falconry. It does not apply to archery
or crossbow bear hunters or to those who are stationary and in the act of
hunting bobcat, coyote or fox. Archery and crossbow deer hunters also are not
required to wear hunter orange except during the youth rearm seasons, early
antlerless rearm and the November rearm deer season.

To all you great Deer Hunters! Just a few eld tips for your trophy
Buck. If its not below 32 degrees you need to cape your deer as soon
as possible, no more than one day. Three days if it is. Cut around the
deer behind the shoulders, cut the front legs off just above the knees
and skin the deer up to the head and cut off. Put in plastic bag and
freeze it or take to your taxidermist. I will be happy to do it for you if
you bring it to me. Good Luck, and safe hunting. ~ Steve Pritchard

Smoking and Quitting
Smoking and tobacco use have been with mankind for thousands of years. In todays world many people start
smoking in their youth and get very addicted and continue to smoke their whole lives. Most people want to stop and have
tried to quit many times.
I smoked a pipe, cigars, and chewed tobacco myself for many years. Knowing that it was unhealthy was not strong
enough motivation to stop. I had tried many things such as pills, patches, gum, acupuncture, etc. Many of you know exactly
what I am talking about. It is embarrassing to be so addicted to something and not be able to stop it.
Tobacco use is a dual addiction, Physical and Psychological. The physical addiction means the brain is actually
dependent on the nicotine to help perform some body functions. When the nicotine is not present, fatigue, hunger, brain
fog, irritability, etc. begin to occur. As soon as new nicotine hits the blood stream, things get better. We become physically
dependent on that chemical to help us feel good. There is one study that shows that the deep drag of a cigarette will
increase oxygen in the blood. Deep breathing will do the same. We can become dependent on the nicotine and the act
of smoking.
The psychological addiction has to do with stress and anxiety control. Even though, nicotine is a stimulant it can have
a calming effect on someone who is anxious. Tobacco is a grounding substance, so it makes people feel more level. Some
people who feel scattered or have lack of focus can concentrate better when using nicotine. It can stimulate conversion
of glycogen to glucose, bringing up blood sugar. So it often reduces appetite and feelings of hunger.
These positive benets of tobacco use are part of the reason it is so hard to quit. There is a program that works well,
when one is ready and serious about quitting. One must mentally prepare and get ready to let go of this smoking habit. We
have a created an audio CD to help the mind become more prepared. The title is, Fit, Clean, and
Sober, Mind Coaching for Recovery from Addictions. To learn to stop smoking or chewing tobacco,
listen to the CD once per day for at least 2 weeks (four weeks is better). Do not stop smoking or
chewing yet. Do that when your mind is receptive. Listen to the CD just before going to bed. This
prepares your mind to be ready to become a non smoker. It also teaches you how to relax, manage
stress, and concentrate so you can deal with the psychological part of the addiction.
Then use a Homeopathic Smoking Quit Kit. This has Homeopathic Lobelia 6C in it. That is
made from Indian tobacco, which takes away the smoking urges. It basically tricks the body into
thinking tobacco is present. You dissolve one pellet in your mouth every time you get an urge. That
takes away the urge for 15 minutes up to 2-3 hours. After about ve days you will be done with
the physical withdrawal. A second Homeopathic Remedy in the kit is Nux Vomica 30C, which helps
reduce urges to eat while going through the withdrawal and the process of stopping nicotine.

In Michigan in 2010 there were 55,867
reported car-deer crashes with 11 mo-
torists killed and 1,277 injured. About
80 percent of all car-deer crashes take
place on two-lane roads between dusk
and dawn. (Of the reported car-deer
accidents Kent County is number one
and Montcalm County is number six in
the states highest accident rate).
What can you do?
Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
Remember, safety belts are your best
defense in any collision.
Be alert for deer in spring and fall,
especially at dawn and dusk.
Heed deer crossing and speed limit
signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
Dont swerve!
Brake rmly
Hold on to the steering wheel.
Stay in your lane.
Bring your vehicle to a controlled stop.
We at Hills Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December
and a big surge directly after the end of Daylight Savings, because more people are still on the road at
sunset.
If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hills Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your ve-
hicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their preferred
repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the
cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe its not in your best interest to take
your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost,
whereas these preferred shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethi-
cal to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. Youre our customer, not
your insurance companys. Hills Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the nest repairs
available.
For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have
a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/
