Task : Maintaining Laundry Flow System

HOUSEKEEPING DEPARTMENT

Standard

: A schedule is set to ensure the smooth flow of linen from Laundry to hotel
outlets as required.

Procedure:
1. Housekeeping Department will set the time schedules for all hotel outlets for Sending soiled laundry and issuing linen based on outlet need and work load of the Laundry. 2. Soiled linen from all outlets is counted and entered on requisition form before sent to laundry. 3. Housekeeping counts and confirms soiled linen on the requisition form before linen is given to laundry. 4. Laundry provides required linen to all hotel outlets as required.

Task : Separating Laundry Items

Standard

: Laundry is careful to look at fibre content and washing instructions for all
laundry that needs to be cleaned.

Procedure:
1. Separate all linen into two categories: linen which can be washed in hotel machines and laundry for dry cleaning. Laundered by washing in water: Sheets, pillow cases, and duvets covers Cotton cellular blankets Towels Serviettes and napkins Tablecloths Overalls and uniforms Light Curtains

Laundered by dry cleaning: Bedspreads and blankets Duvets Heavy curtains Suits

Task : Preparing Laundry for Cleaning Standard : Laundry is carefully sorted before washing to ensure colour do not run, injuries
do not occur or linen does not shrink or fall apart.

Procedure:
1. Soiled linen is unloaded and sorted according to hotel outlet, colour fastness, type, item and washing instructions. 2. Linen is checked to ensure no objects are hidden such as pens, razor blades or clothing. 3. Heavily soiled items are laundered separately

Task : Weighing Standard : Washing machines should not be overloaded as laundry will not be cleaned well
and items may be damaged.

Procedure:
1. Each bundle of prepared laundry must be weighed to ensure fit into the Washing machine (industrial machines). 2. Be careful not to overload machines as items may become damaged or not correctly cleaned. 3. Ensure that when washing heavy items such as towels or blankets, load weight is reduced to ensure better wash.

Task : Washing Laundry Items Standard : Launder at the correct temperature; using the appropriate detergents and load
the machine as instructed, otherwise staining, discoloration, creasing and shrinkage may result. Inspect laundered items for any bad stains or tears and send damaged items for repair.

Procedure:

Ensure that quality of water used in laundering does not cause problems to the linen. Hard water contains salts that mix with linen.

Task : Finishing Linen


HOUSEKEEPING DEPARTMENT

Standard Procedure:

: All linen is finished to look crisp and neat.

1. Sort linen according to type of finishing required. If laundering is done inhouse, identify damaged and soiled items and send back to be rewashed or repaired. 2. Finish linen according to type, size and fabric of items. 3. Make sure that all ironed linen is smooth and wrinkle free.. 4. Check that items are folded according to the standard of the hotel outlet. 5. Ensure flat items such as sheets, pillows cases, and table cloths are pressed on special calendar fitted with a device to fold them or with a rotary iron. Non-flat items such as uniforms, coats, shirts, are finished on various presses developed for different types and shapes of articles.

Task : After Laundering 8

Standard

: Linen is packaged and return to hotel outlets as required and according to hotel
policy.

Procedure:
1. Ensure that after all laundry items have been finished they are carefully loaded into clean bags, baskets or trolleys and sent to the correct hotel department. 2. Laundry items are carefully counted to ensure that required items are returned and checked against laundry order form.

3 .Never store finished linen on the floor. Store and pack away from soiled linen.

Task : Maintaining the Laundry Room


HOUSEKEEPING DEPARTMENT

Standard Procedure:

: Laundry is maintained in a sanitary and well ordered condition at all times.

1. Store all washing detergents and materials in a safe location to avoid spills and accidents. 2. Maintain stock levels of all laundry supplies to required levels. 3. Ensure that laundry room is locked and secured when not in use. 4. Regularly clean all parts of the laundry rooms including floors, walls, ceiling and light fixtures. 4. Ensure laundry room is well equipped with necessary machinery and equipment that is maintained in good working order
