CDD: 665.503 Foreword Whether we care to admit it or not, the center of the international oil industry is Houston, Texas. Most of the International Major oil companies and many of the large independent ones have their headquarters in Houston. In addition I would venture to say that 60% of all oilfield equipment is manufactured in Houston. But the oil industry is truly a global business, and most of the world’s major oil deposits are in places where English is not the spoken language. The Company I work for, Transocean Sedco Forex, has a major presence in both Brazil and Angola. We have 000 Portuguese-speaking employees and import in Brazil and Angola millions of dollars of oilfield equipment every year. We have a major initiative to train the citizens of our host country, and this training can only be accomplished if the instructions manuals are in the proper language. Like any specialized field, oilfield terminology has its own special language, which needs to be translated properly if we are to make any sense out of the meaning of the words. It also helps companies like mine to “get” the documentation right for customs importation, and the proper wording for our permits and submission to other governmental agencies. 1 am grateful to Marcia for her work in putting together a lexicon of the correct Portuguese for our industry.
