2008 O Level Social Studies old syllabus a.

. Mid level - basic inference based on content Highest level - infer purpose (indicating 4As) The source was created to arouse hostility among Serbs against the KFOR/ the Albanians. The photographer was trying to show the atrocities done by the Albanians towards the Serbs even in the presence of the KFOR - suggesting that KFOR was ineffective and was taking sides. The picture portrayed how the Serbs' area was being attacked by Albanians even while KFOR soldiers were on patrol. Hence, by showing his disapproval for KFOR and the Albanians, he was trying to erode the Serbs' support for KFOR and also hate the Albanians even more. b. Highest level - Answer based on the lack of reliability of Source B. ie uses provenance and content of Source B to explain its lack of reliability and c/r to other source support stand No, the Serb in Source C would not agree with the Commander with KFOR as he was at the end of his service so he would just try to make KFOR achievement look good so he stressed the strong actions they have taken to stop the violence and how successful they have been. (purpse/biased). Furthermore, The KFOR commander made it sound as if KFOR have done a good job and has kept peace successfully, but if we look at Source A, we can see it is not true as violence still continued despite the presence of KFOR army in Kosovo/ (best to c/r to background info where possible) c. Mid level- c/r to other sources Mid - high level - rejects source based on tone/ grounds that what source is saying is not what KFOR does Highest level - rejects based on purpose of source and identifying likely author + c/r I do not believe the sources as the author of the source could be a Serb and was providing a distorted picture of the KFOR because he has a hidden agenda. He must have claimed to be the official website of KFOR to mislead people especially the Serbs into thinking that KFOR has taken side of Albanians and should not be welcomes. This is unacceptable. Furthermore, I cannot believe the source when it stated that 'KFORs successful peacekeeping mission involved expelling 350 000 Serbs, killing 1100 Serbs and kidnapping 1000 people. This cannot be true as from the background information it is mentioned that KFOR was sent by NATO to ease the situation in Kosovo. That their main purpose was to establish security as a peacekeeping force and it has no reason to destroy the Serbs Christian culture. d. Highest level answer based on purpose and content analysis No, the source cannot prove that NATO was successful because the source could be biased. It was published to persuade the community in Kosovo and the rest of the world that NATO has done well and that they should be supportive of NATOs efforts. Due to this agenda, the picture only provided a positive view of Kosovo. More importantly, the source cannot prove that NATO has been successful because this is only picture of a ticket booth and cannot speak for what NATO has done in dealing with the Kosovo crisis. It is too simplistic to generalise from just a photograph about the whole crisis. This is further supported by Source C which suggested that although violence has subsided in Kosovo, there could still be the presence of revenge as shown in indeedthe flames of revenge continue to burn. Hence, this indicates that NATO may not be totally successful in Kosovo as the crisis may resurface.
