Increasing globalization and the associated
competition in retailing are leading the way

office, but also on the decentralized IT
landscape in stores. Successful
implementation of topics such as multi-
channel retailing, efficient customer response
(ECR), customer relationship management
(CRM) and category management (CM)
require sales, item master and customer data
to be available in real time for all applications
at all times. Features such as guaranteed
future expandability, flexibility and reliability

POS family. With more than 30 years of

BEETLE POS systems are management-
ready and support options for software
distribution, system inventory management,
and remote administration as provided by
today’s IT management solutions such as
TivoliTM.
Users decide what BEETLE model and
configuration they need to meet their
requirements - modular or compact, thin or
fat, with character or graphical user interface.
Users can also freely choose the operating
system - MS-DOS, Windows or Linux - and
the application software they want to use. Of
course, this also applies to the peripheral
devices that complete the system and turn it
into a tailored vertical solution.
The BEETLE POS family consists of
powerful, scalable models running on
standard PC technology with proven POS-
specific properties and the necessary product
continuity. On-going technological
development takes place under economic
aspects with user benefit in mind.

The “best-in-class” system philosophy

The increasing need for cost-optimized IT
solutions has led to the development of new,
alternative technologies in retailing. These
server-oriented solution concepts have
mainly been developed in Java and new
demands have been placed on the hardware
and software. The objectives of these new
applications, also referred to as server-centric
computing, is to optimize the cost of software
distribution /maintenance and system
administration, and thus to minimize TCO.
BEETLE /XS and /S
The BEETLE /XS is an intelligent thin client
system that has been tailored to these server-
centric applications and can be used in
conventional client/server solutions. It does
not matter whether the system is used as a
service, administration or POS terminal. The
BEETLE /XS has an attractive design, a very
small footprint and high availability, and
comes at an optimum price/performance
ratio. The easy maintenance and flash
memory technology ensure optimum system
costs.
BEETLE /S
A special feature of these two models is that
they become intuitive-to-operate POS
terminals in conjunction with our 12.1” or 15”
adaptable TFT flat screens with a touch
surface.

The BEETLE /S is also available as a kiosk/
information terminal to hang on the wall.
The BEETLE /M is the ideal platform for
modular best-of-breed POS solutions for
many of our customers. This model is an ideal
compromise between a small foot-print and
required expandability. In addition to the the
standard BEETLE ports, the system also
supports installation of two I/O expansion
cards, one diskette drive and a CD-ROM/DVD
drive.
BEETLE /M
The BEETLE /XL-II is the “big brother” of the
BEETLE /M. This model supports four I/O
expansion cards and the option of installing
another accessible 3.5” drive such as a
backup streamer. Its larger housing means
that this model has the most options for
expansion. The BEETLE /XL-II provides
enough reserves for future upgrades, and
also has sufficient power and expandability
to be deployed as a store server.

of a thin client terminal. Its design,
performance and features correspond to
those of the BEETLE /XS, but the system can
be expanded to support more ports and
drives, owing to its bigger chasis size and

ideal computerized desk-top POS system for
both stand-alone and server-centric network
solutions.

BEETLE /M-II
This model is a further development of the
very successful BEETLE /M and has been
optimized in terms of processor technology,
interfaces, support for scales and
serviceability. Although it has a compact
design, the BEETLE /M-II is very flexible and
expandable, and supports a wide range of
drive and interface options. The system
features proven PC technology based on Intel
Pentium 4 processors in conjunction with the
Intel 845 GV chipset. During its development,
special consideration was made to use
components that will be available in the long
terms, to ensure products availability in the
long run. Various standard PC and retail-
specific powered interfaces - both USB and
RS232 - are available to connect peripherals
such as scanners, POS printers,
touchscreens, customer displays and the
likes.
The integrated scales technology makes it
possible to display both weight and price/item
information on just one display. This
integrated function makes it easier for the
customers to capture product information at
the point-of-sale.
BEETLE /M-II
The BEETLE /M-II is the ideal system platform
when it comes to powerful Windows32 and
Linux-based applications featuring a
graphical user interface. In addition to the
POS functions, the system’s powerful
processor can support multi-media facilities
extending to video and audio solutions.
BEETLE /XXL-II and /i8 Modular
The BEETLE /XXL-II supports up to four I/O
expansion cards and the option of installing
another accessible 3.5” drive such as a
backup streamer. The expandable BEETLE
/XXL-II ensure sufficient reserves for current
and future requirements.
The BEETLE /i8 Modular is packed with
features ranging from RF LAN to Dual Screen
capabilities. The BEETLE /i8 is an ideal Store
Automation Solution because it can be
optimized without limiting peripheral choices
or expansion options and its open

pre-installed on
all modular Windows-based BEETLE
systems. It incorporates the Intel ®
LANDesk ® Client Manager, a proven
management solution for desktop systems
that is based on standards. The numerous
functions include, for example, efficient and
automatic system inventory management and
remote administration of POS systems.
Hardware monitoring functions support
proactive fault management, which allows IT
service to be controlled efficiently. By means
of integration modules, BEETLEVIEW can be
integrated seamlessly in established
enterprise management applications such as
TivoliTM and thus in corporate management
solutions.
A versatile, scalable and highly available POS
family based on standards, coupled with an
uncompromising, scalable management
solution, form the basis for a win-win situation
for the customers. An identical solution is
being developed for Linux.
Peripherals
All BEETLE models are open system
platforms for modern, flexible POS solutions
in the best-of-breed sense, and support
requirements for maximum modularity.
Wincor Nixdorf has an extensive range of
retail-specific peripherals such as POS
printers, bar code scanners, line displays,
cash drawers, POS keyboards and flat
screens. Our portfolio of self-developed and
OEM products include everything that is
needed for a professional POS solution. Third
party equipment can also be connected if
required.
We can also assume the role of a system
integrator, and configure the products in such
a way that all solution components can
interact effectively. This also include provision
of the retail-specific OPOS and JavaPOS
drivers as well as, upon request, customizing
the overall configuration.
Communication
BEETLE systems can communicate over all
standardized networks. Users decide whether
they want a LAN or WAN, cabled or wireless
technology, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX or Netbios.
