90 Day Encounter with the Book of Mormon

President Gordon B. Hinckley

Brothers and sisters, without reservation I promise you that if you will prayerfully read the Book of Mormon, regardless of how many times you previously have read it, there will come into your hearts an added measure of the Sprit of the Lord. There will come a strengthened resolution to walk in obedience to His commandments, and there will come a stronger testimony of the living reality of the Son of God. (The Power of the Book of Mormon, Ensign, June 1988, p. 6) 1 Nephi 19:22-23 22 Now it came to pass that I, Nephi, did teach my brethren these things; and it came to pass that I did read many things to them, which were engraven upon the plates of brass, that they might know concerning the doings of the Lord in other lands, among people of old. 23 And I did read many things unto them which were written in the books of Moses; but that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet Isaiah; for I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning. First 30 days: that they might know concerning the doings of the Lord in other lands, among people of old. Read the Book of Mormon with a pencil in hand. Read the story that you might know of Gods dealings with these people. Write questions and general observations in the margin as they occur to you. Underline what ever is important to you. Second 30 days: might more full persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer Read the Book of Mormon with a red pencil in hand. Underline all references to the Savior and His infinite atonement, etc. The atonement of Christ with its doctrinal ramifications constitutes the principal theme of the Book of Mormon. You will find most references to Him also include references to the Holy Ghost. Underline what impresses you and how you feel about the Savior and Redeemer. Third 30 days: for I did liken all scriptures unto us (me), that it might be for our (my) profit and learning. Read the Book of Mormon with a blue pencil in hand. This is the most important way to read the scriptures. The Book of Mormon is not a book about religion. It is religion. It is not something to be studied and read; it is to be lived. This is a personal engagement for you with the things of Holiness. Liken the scriptures unto you. Have your personal encounter with the Book of Mormon. Underline all references that apply to you and your life, your struggles, your challenges, your desires, your hopes, etc. Underline Gods personal revelation to you. What is he teaching you? What is it telling you about whom you are? What is it teaching you about your life? How is God revealing himself to you? At the end of the 90 day reading period, please write an in depth letter to me for my site (www.maccabe.org) sharing your experience with the most correct book Remember, a man or woman can get closer to God by reading it and abiding by its precepts than any other book Philip MacCabe pmaccabe@byu.edu
