Aaron and bike take on the world

Ruth Clayton
Echuca is the last black dot at the end of a line of hundreds that zig-zag through Aaron Liscos map of Australia. Aaron hasnt been home to Hawaii for 18 months, which is when he set off on his worldwide, five-year, 60-country and fivecontinent bike journey. After arriving in Broome in June and riding through the heart of Australia, including Halls Creek, Kalgoorlie and the Nullabor, Aaron ended up in Echuca. Ive done a lot of the outback tracks. Ive seen a lot that most Australians havent seen, he said. Aaron admits he knew nothing about Echuca when he set out for the destination. I knew that it had steamboats, he said. I met a couple of girls in the Nullabor who told me about the Murray River and said You must go and see the Murray River because its up at peak I guess and it hasnt been like this in 10 years or more. So I changed my route a little bit and came down the Murray. Aarons worldwide tour was born of a desire to see the world and raise money and awareness for his charity Wheels for Life. He saved for two years and sold everything he owned to fund the trip. Im a bike mechanic by trade, been doing that for 20 years. Im also a medic, so I figured I had the skills to do such an adventure. However, this is not the first longterm bicycle adventure Aaron has been on his previous routes mainly include Third World countries. As an ambassador for Wheels for Life, Aaron provides bicycles for people living in poverty in Third World countries. I only give away bicylces in third world countries, but we try to raise funds wherever were at, to raise awareness and also to raise funds, he said. What we do is we go and evaluate a person and we find out what their story is and then we talk to local organisations to find out what they know about them. We dont want to give the bikes to just anybody. And then we donate the bike to him. So what it does is it changes their ability to get to and from work, or spend more time with the family. For us its recreation, for them its life changing, really. It really is. Is Aaron enjoying travelling the world on his bicycle? I love it. You cant go that long without loving it a bit. Theres days that are frustrating. Sometimes I wonder what Im doing . . . but for the most part, yeah. Plus I dont have to work, he joked.
