Microsoft tells you its wonderful, competitors tell you its awful, and theres not a lot in between. The Real Story Groups SharePoint Research, does an excellent job of covering the in-between. The authors have done an outstanding job in documenting what SharePoint is, in thinking about how and where it can be used effectively, and in giving prescriptive guidance to organizations that are considering SharePoint both to embrace the good, and to avoid the bad. Michael Sampson President, The Michael Sampson Company Ltd
The quality of the analysis and the writing is exemplary, and I cannot comprehend how any organisation contemplating a SharePoint implementation of any scale could justify not purchasing this research at a price somewhat less than a single day of consulting from the nearest Microsoft channel partner. A great return on the investment. Martin White Managing Director, Intranet Focus
SharePoint promises a number of services (even more than its so-called Six Pillars), but it doesnt necessarily deliver on all those promises to the extent customers hope or expect. The Real Story Group, the leading vendor-neutral analyst firm in the country, addresses exactly what people can expect from SharePoint. Hugh McKellar Editor, KMWorld Magazine
The clear definitions of business services, customer tiers and the rating system allows business analysts, knowledge workers and the CIO to gain a much more rounded insight into SharePoint across the enterprise. Paul Culmsee IT Consultant, Clever Workarounds
The SharePoint Research provides useful, in-depth, technical information for the IT Manager, while also providing a good overview for the non-technical business manager who wants to know where SharePoint will be useful in solving their business dilemmas. This higher-level treatment includes lists of Dos and Donts and highly readable tables summarizing the suitability of SharePoint for use in various scenarios. Toby Ward CEO, Prescient Digital Media

Figure 1. SharePoint is much more than just WSS and MOSS. The broader ecosystem includes Services and Software partners, as well as a broader universe of communityoriented resources. To be fair, no portal product is simple to implement. However, in the case of SharePoint, the complexity stems in part from the number of available partner solutions and varying notions of how to implement the tool among Microsoft channel consulting partners. Thus, for an enterprise deployment (or smaller), you will almost certainly be interacting with the broader ecosystem. Dont be surprised to learn that your results will vary.
Community
Microsoft has attracted an impressive community around SharePoint. Earlier in this report, we focused on the critical role of training firms. Now lets look at some of the less formal resources in the community that could assist with your project.
Figure 2. Formal options for community assistance range from code samples to advice.
Search Products
Long the forgotten SharePoint stepchild, Search Services have improved in SP 2007 and SP2010. So, why go with an alternative product? Well, you might have several reasons. First, your SharePoint license may not cover sufficient search functionality. In some cases, it may be more cost effective to license an alternative. Additionally, there is the issue purely of functionality; some customers have traditionally preferred competing products over Microsofts native search capability. Among other reasons, competing products likely are going to do a better job of indexing non-SharePoint content unless you license FAST. Finally, many mid-range search products are generally easier to install and administer than SharePoint Search (and often faster at query time), although with SP 2010, that gap may begin to close. If youre seeking alternatives, theres a veritable smorgasbord of enterprise search options from which to choose. By now, almost every reputable search vendor has SharePoint connectors and Web Parts available. Be aware, however, that these are of varying quality, and may not offer enough performance or a close enough integration (depending on your scenario). In this section, we briefly review: Coveo: Enterprise Search BA-Insight: Longitude for SharePoint SurfRay: Ontolica 2010 for SharePoint Coveo: Enterprise Search 6 (www.coveo.com)
Vendor at a Glance Geography Key Service Strengths Mostly North America, resellers for Europe, Australia, and Asia Enterprise Search to replace SharePoint Search Services Comparatively easy to deploy, configure, and run Strong reporting and analytics facilities Extensible via fairly elaborate set of .NET APIs Strong support for federated search across diverse repositories
Weaknesses
Can become a bandwidth hog when collecting content File Monitoring maxes out at 4000 events per second (although Coveo says this is a Windows-based limitation) Natively supports comparatively few file types Very basic linguistics support $5,000 for 50,000 documents; $10,000 for 100,000 documents; complex installations serving large enterprises are often six figures
Licensing
Chapter 4 The SharePoint Ecosystem Summary Coveo built a decent reputation offering search services as an alternative to the horrible engine in SPS 2003. With SharePoint Search 2007, Microsoft closed the gap a bit, but you might still find Coveo attractive. Customers laud the usability of the product and the fact that neither IT staff nor users have to be trained extensively, saving cost and time. We might add that the software is also comparatively well priced, given its capabilities.
Figure 3. Like many other high-end tools, Coveo supports faceted search and clustering. Purchase for complete research.
