1. (a) (i) Although soccer gambling has been regulated in Hong Kong, some people
still consider that it will bring adverse effects. Suggest TWO such effects. (2 marks)

(ii) Tai Ming is an adult Christian and he firmly refuses to engage in soccer gambling.
Suggest THREE different Biblical teachings to support his decision. Explain your
answer. (6 marks)

(iii) In response to the spread of gambling in society, what actions should the Church
take? Suggest TWO actions and support each action with a different Biblical teaching.

(b) (i) Being a Christian teacher, Siu Ling opposes the incorrect concepts of weight
loss and body slimming passed on through the media. What Biblical teachings could
she use to teach her students that these concepts are incorrect? Give THREE Biblical
teachings and explain your answer. (6 marks)

(ii) As a reader, what could you do to express your dissatisfaction with the media for
such practices? Suggest TWO proper ways. (2 marks)

1. (a) (i)
 Once addicted to / indulge in gambling, the consequences will be very serious.
It will lead to a lot of problems, e.g.: in serious debt and family disharmony.
 Participants of gambling will become lazy, greedy and hope to gain money
without work.
 Participants of gambling will rely on luck and become unmotivated to work

(ii)
 People should earn their reasonable pay through work (Ecc 3:13) rather than
gambling.
 One of the commandments of the Lord is "Not to desire others' possession" (Ex
20:17). However, gambling is exactly desiring others' money.
 We should not make those who are weak in faith fall into sin (ICor 8:9). Tai
Ming's participation in gambling may encourage some of those who are lack of
self-control take part in gambling.
 We should love our neighbour (Mk 12:31) but what we gain from gambling. is
actually the lost of others.
 We should trust the Lord and not to worry too much about our living (Mt 6:31-
33). Gambling depends on luck rather than trusting in Lord.

(iii)
 Provide counseling services to those who are addicted to gambling, helping
them get rid of the bad habbit. The church should help those who are in need,
(Lk 10:25-37)
 Condemn/disapprove those organizations/government that promote gambling.

 Provide material or psychological support to the people/families who suffer
from the consequences of gambling. The Church should take care of those who
cannot help themselves. (ITim 5116)
 Educate the adolescent the negative influences of gambling so that they can stay
away from it. The church should not disregard those who are weak in faith.

(b) (i)
 The mass media transmits wrong concepts of beauty. All people are created by
the Lord. (Gen 1:26-28) The value of a person has nothing to do with his/her
body figure and outlook.
 A person's value and dignity depends on the fact that he/she bears the image of
God. ( Gen 1:26-28) It has nothing to do with his/her outlook.
 Many advertisements on body slimming have not been scientifically tested.
Some of them may even be harmful to our bodies. Our body is the temple of
God (ICor 6:19-20). We should take care of it carefully and not accept those
unproven advertisements without scrutiny.
 These advertisements frequently make negative comments on those who are fat
(or even have normal figure shape) and discriminate against them. The Bible
teaches us that God does not treat peoples according to their outward
appearance. (Jas 2: 1-9)
 The bible teaches us to have self-control in everything (ICor 9:24-27), chasing
after body slimming too much would cause lost of self-control.
 These advertisements encourage an idea that the slimmer is the better/only the
slim people are lovable. Love as shown by Jesus is about acceptance,
forgiveness and care. It has nothing to do with a person's body figure.

 Tell friends and relatives not to purchase/view such media.
 Write to the media and complain about their fault.

2. (a) (i) Give TWO misconceptions about death that the youth of Hong Kong get
from popular culture. (2 marks)

(b) (i) The number of tourists coming to Hong Kong has increased recently.
Sometimes, they are not well-treated. Give TWO examples. (2 marks)
(ii) Give TWO Biblical teachings to advise some Hong Kong people to improve their
attitudes towards the tourists. (4 marks)
(c) Some visitors to Hong Kong try to make money by illegal means. List THREE
different examples. For each example use a different Biblical teaching to illustrate
such behaviour is wrong. (6 marks)

2. (a) (i)
 Death is a liberation or an escape so that people will no longer face their
problems. Death is a way for revenge/accusation to others.
 The feeling of death is wonderful and romantic.
 Committing suicide is a brave behaviour.
 People can be re-live again after death.

(ii)
 The Bible teaches that there is a right time to do everything (Ecc 8:6-8). He/She
might feel gloomy at the moment but it does not mean this situation will last
forever. There are always turning points in life. He/She should reclaim
himself/herself and face life positively.
 The Bible teaches us that we should care and honour our parents (Proverbs
23:25 & The Ten Commandments). His/Her situation will make his/her parents
worry deeply. He/She should seek help to solve the problem so that people who
care about him/her would be relieved.
 Moses prayed to the Lord that he can enjoy His love and be joyful all his life.
(Psalm 90:14). He/She can learn from Moses praying to the Lord in the same
way.
 Remind him/her life is valuable and precious (Mk 5:1-20) and encourage
him/her to live positively.
 He/She should learn to rely on the Lord and try to entrust his/her problems to
Him. The Lord loves and cares for him/her (Mt 6:19-34).

(b) (i)
 Some people treat them impolitely.
 Some people obtain their money by deception.
 Some people discriminate against them.

 People should treat them friendly. Jesus used to mixed with all classes of People
in harmony (Mt 8:5-12)
 People should offer them help when they need it as it was the case of the
 Good Samaritan (Lk 10:25-37).
 People should trade with them fairly and treat foreigners well (Deut 10:17- ]9)
and should not oppress them.
 People should treat them equally as if they are one of our own people and make
them feel at home because we should not treat people differently according to
their outlook (Jas 2:1-9).
 People should respect them because everyone is created in the image of God
(Gen 1:27) and let them feel at home while they are staying in Hong Kong.

(c)
 Some visitors to Hong Kong prostitute themselves. The Bible teaches us that
people are created in the image of God. They are holy and should be respected
(Gen 1:27).
 Thus they should not participate in prostitution.
 Some visitors to Hong Kong cut down precious/protected trees and sell them for
great profit. This would cause damages to the environment and violate the
Biblical teaching (Gen 1:26-31).
 Some visitors to Hong Kong work in the black labour market (or other illegal
activities such as: prostitution, robbery). This violates the law of our society and
also the Biblical teaching(Rom 13:1).

3. (a) (i)
Tai Shing has been unemployed for a long time. His wife Siu Kuen was originally a
full-time housewife. However, in order to support the family, she has found a job.
Since then, Tai Shing has stayed at home and looked after his family. Suggest TWO
difficulties each of them may encounter when facing the change of their roles. Briefly
explain your answer. (4 marks)
(ii) Give FOUR different Biblical teachings to help them face the difficulties in the
change of their roles. Explain your answer. (8 marks)
(b) The work pressure of the general working population has become greater than
before. Suggest TWO different Biblical teachings to each of the two kinds of people
below in order to advise them and help them face this situation.

3. (a) (i) For Tai Shing:
 He may not want people know of this situation because it has not been
commonly accepted that the wife goes out to work while the husband stays at
home.
 Being unable to support his family, he might feel that he is useless.
 He may worry that he cannot do the housework well because this is not his
strength.

For Siu Kuen:
 She may feel unable to cope with the pacing of work and will consider to quit
her job.
 She may worry that her colleagues/family members/neighbours will look at her
husband with prejudicial views.

working with her colleagues and hence experience pressure.

(ii) For Tai Shing
 He should not mind how people look at him. He should learn from Jesus's
example to fulfil his mission wholeheartedly.
 He should trust in the Lord (Mt 6:19-34). God must have a plan when He put

 God puts people in different posts. Every post is significant (ICor 1?:14- 27).
Tai Shing should keep his post wholeheartedly, do his best and pass this adverse
situation with his wife.

For Siu Kuen
 Following Jesus' teaching on mutual relationship with (Mt 7:12). When she
treats them with love, she will be able to have a harmonious relationship with
them.
 Work is an order from God (Gen 1:26-31), no matter it is being a housewife or
working outside.
 She should share with Tai Shing in their leisure time, comforting, supporting
and encouraging each other. The Bible teaches husband and wife should love
each other.

(b) (i)
They should treat the employees well and share with them the success of the company

They should allow their employees rest adequately so that they will not be too tensive
or tired. (Ex 20:9-10) They should not impose excessive workloads on their
employees blindly.
They should make good use of their individual talents given by God. (Mt 25:.14-30) .

4. (a) (i)
Give TWO reasons to explain why many young people regard certain singers and film
stars as idols. (2 marks)

(ii) Last year some senior officials of certain electronic media and entertainment
companies were taken to the ICAC headquarters to assist in the investigation into the
control of the music billboard award results.

Chi Ming's father holds a senior position in another media organization. He is worried
that his father would also possibly make the same mistakes. Suggest THREE Biblical
teachings which Chi Ming could use to remind his father not to make the same
mistakes. (6 marks)

(b) (i) Since the incident, Chi Ming has given up idol worship. However, he has still
failed to make good use of his leisure. Suggest him TWO practical ways which could
further enrich his life. . Support each of your suggestions; with a different Biblical
(4 marks)

(ii) Chi Ming's friend is a computer genius. He always borrows money from others in
order to upgrade his computer. By this, he can invade other people's computers more
easily. Chi Ming wants to advise him with Biblical teachings. Give THREE Biblical
teachings Chi Ming could use and explain your answer. (6 marks)

(c) Suggest ONE activity which helps Hong Kong secondary school students have a
more balanced physical and mental development. Briefly explain your answer. (2
marks)

4. (a) (i)
 Idols are presented as a symbol of success. Many adolescents today have
difficulties in achieving success and they project their wish to the idols.
 Usually the appearance of idols are very attractive.
 This has become a trend and lagging behind the trend will be regarded as out-
group.

(ii)
 God demands fairness and honesty (Deut 10:15-20) but the above senior
officials violated God's demand.
 God does not like corruption (Amos 5:10-15) and such behaviour is corruption.
 God's commandment tells us not to desire others' possessions (Ex 20:17).
People doing such things are clearly greedy.
 People should be paid fairly after work (Lk 10:7). Corruption is unfair to those
who work hard but are not duly rewarded because they do not pay bribes.
 We should not be a stumbling-block for others (Mt 18:6-7). Their behaviour
may tempt others to use wrong means in order to achieve their goals.

(b)(i)
 He may take part in voluntary services, helping the people in need. (Mt 25:31-
46)
 He may take part in environmental protection campaign or courses, so that he
can perform/learn his stewardship with regard to environment. (Gen 1:26- 31)
 He may spend more time to communicate with his parents, express his feelings
and thoughts more to them, so that they would not worry about him. (Eph 6:1-4)

 He may take part in various extra-curricula activities to develop his talents


because God gives people different gifts(Mt 25:14-30) and we should not leave
them undeveloped.

(ii)
 We should obey the law (IPeter 2:13-17), but hackers' activities are illegal.
 Every person should make good use of his/her gifts given by God (Mt 25:14-
30). He should use his gifts to contribute to society but not intrude into others'
computers.
 "Thou shall not steal"(Ex 20:15), hackers intrude into others' computers and
steal their information.
 The Bible teaches us that we should use our money to help those who are in
need (Lk 10:30-35). The fact that he uses up all his money and borrows from
others is not a proper way of using money.
 Jesus teaches us to love our neighbour (Mr 12:29-31). Hackers make damages
towards others' computers , incurring loss of money and other things.
