EMERGENCE OF A GLOBAL INDIA English has powered India to a global level. English is becoming more and more popular and important in India, as Indians are opting for English education for their children. The hike is happening so fast that the nationwide enrolment in the upper primary section of English-medium schools has seen a hike of 74% during 2003-2006. English is presently the third highest medium of instruction for upper primary students after Hindu and Marathi. English is the second widely spoken language in India after Hindi. It is after all, the widely read and written language in the country. The largest number of newspapers in India is in English.
