Red Cross Offers Local Behavioral Health Support for Military Families
Even as more troops are scheduled to return home, there is still a need for family members to develop resilience skills. The American Red Cross, through their local chapters, has developed such a tool using their existing resources and volunteers. With today's pace of military deployments, the armed forces are paying increasing attention to preparing service members to cope with the psychological stress of combat and its aftermath. The Red Cross believes it is equally important to prepare family members to ensure they are better able to deal with the challenges of 'serving' at home while their loved one is deployed. Coping with Deployments: Psychological First Aid for Military Families was developed out of the Red Cross' continuing commitment to serve military families. This course was designed specifically for spouses, parents, siblings, and significant others of service members. It provides useful information on how to strengthen your ability to successfully respond to the challenges military family members may encounter throughout the deployment cycle. It also explains how to provide psychological first aid to others experiencing stressful feelings or events. For more information about the course, a brochure <http://www.redcross.org/www-files/Documents/pdf/SAF/CopeWithDeploymentsBroc hure.pdf> is available which outlines the program. To find out if a course is taught in your area, please contact your local chapter. You can find your local chapter at www.redcross.org and enter your zip code.

FROM THE PRESIDENT I am the new Milius FRG President and my name is Katie Horton. I am married to DC3 Horton and we live in Pacific Beach with our 2 dogs. I am originally from Sunny Southern California thanks to the Marine Corps stationing my family at El Toro Marine Corps Base which is now called The OC Great Park. I went to school for Criminal Justice and Business Law. I like to think I am crafty but Martha Stewart won't be calling me for tips anytime soon. I have met some really great people while being a Navy Wife and hope to keep that trend going. This will be my husband's third deployment with the ship and my goal is to say it was our best one. Currently, we have some fun ideas for FRG meet ups in the works and are hoping to have a large turnout for our first craft and meeting event at the Murphy Canyon Youth Center in January after our Sailors depart. I will keep posting on the Milius Command Families page any events we have going on and sending out emails so if you want to be added to our email list or have questions for any of the FRG Board members please feel free to contact us at ussmilius69frg@gmail.com. We really do want to make this a positive bonding experience. Thank you! Katie Horton

OMBUDSMAN MEMO
PRE-DEPLOYMENT PHASE:
The time leading up to deployment can be extremely stressful for the sailors and their families. Your feelings are based on the anticipation of losshe/she is leaving. There is increased tension between both spouses as they each try to accomplish all they need to do as well as find that couple time. During this phase, it is quite normal to have a HUGE fight with your spouse. Its easier to be angry with them than to deal with the pain and loss of saying goodbye for 6 or more months.
Your families may be feeling: (1) Denial and Disbelief (2) Anger and Resentment of the military, spouse, and their job (3) Frustration with preparation needs (4) Hurt and Rejection (5) Excitement of the mission at hand. Just like anything, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. You can choose to be angry and depressed or you can choose to make the deployment fun and a positive experience for yourself and for those of us with kids, them too! Set a goal to accomplish one thing this deployment, go back to school, join a gym, volunteer with the USS MILIUS FRG, something that will benefit you.
Being prepared and following some simple tips can lead to a successful and healthy deployment.
Here a just a few: (1) COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE (2) Discuss your feelings (3) Have a support team (4) Get Involved (5)Take care of yourself and get plenty of rest. Your families deployment readiness is vital to the success of the Navy; dont miss your chance to ask the command your questions about deployment. We encourage you to come out to the next USS MILIUS Pre-Deployment brief on Dec 6th at the Admiral Robinson Bowling Alley at 1800. The command leadership, FFSC, and the Ombudsman will be on hand with handouts and key information. We look forward to seeing you there. If you need childcare, please let either Teresa or I know by Nov 22nd. Have a great Navy Day! Your Command Ombudsman Team Jeri Nix and Teresa Tillman

When Sailors had the chance to cruise the streets, crew members headed out to Fishermans Wharf to eat the freshest seafood, relish in the cities art and culture, experience the lonely rock of Alcatraz and take in all the glitz and glamour San Francisco shopping and downtown has to offer. The past few months have been busy and non-stop but it was a great chance for MLIIUS to see an uncommon port with rich history. Next on the plate for MILIUS is Santa Barbara where the Navy League once again will dish out nothing but the best for MILIUS.
Rendering Honors to the San Francisco Yacht Club during Fleet Week
MILIUS will be hosting tours, attending the Military Ball, participating in a Veterans Day parade in addition to sporting events and community relations events. As mentioned in last months edition, if you are interested in living the life of your Sailor for a few days, inform your Sailor you are interested in the Tiger Cruise from Santa Barbara to San Diego. Some restrictions do apply and advance notice is required so the sooner you let your Sailor know, the better! Hope to see you there!
If you have questions, comments or suggestions for MILIUS FRONTLINE NEWS, please email the Public Affairs Officer at PAO@ddg69.navy.mil. Also, please check the Facebook page and contact our Ombudsmen for more information!
