The Volkswagen Group with its headquarters in Wolfsburg is one of the worlds leading automobile manufacturers and the largest carmaker in Europe. In 2010, the Group increased the number of vehicles delivered to customers to 7.203 million (2009: 6.336 million), corresponding to a 11.4 percent share of the world passenger car market. In Western Europe just over one in five new cars (21.0 percent) comes from the Volkswagen Group. Group sales came in 2010 to 126,9 billion euros (2009: 105.2 billion). Profit after tax in the 2010 financial year amounted to 7.2 billion euros (2009: 0.9 billion). Each brand has its own character and operates as an in dependent entity on the market. The product range extends from lowconsumption small cars to luxury class vehicles. In the commercial vehicle sector, the product offering spans pick ups, buses and heavy trucks. From the first quarter of 2011 the Group operates 62 produc tion plants* in fifteen European countries and a further seven countries in the Americas, Asia and Africa. Around the world, nearly 400,000 employees produce about 30,000 vehicles or are involved in vehiclerelated services each working day. The Volkswagen Group sells its vehicles in 153 countries. It is the goal of the Group to offer attractive, safe and environmentally sound vehicles which are competitive on an increasingly tough market and which set world standards in their respective classes.
* The production plants Chattanooga and Osnabrck will start production in spring 2011 and are therefore counted as active production plants. December 31, 2010

Ferdinand Porsches blueprint turned the dream of automotive mobility for the masses into a peoples car. The automobile laid the foundation for a com pany which rapidly acquired international significance after the Second World War. The motor of the Wirtschafts wunder was aircooled and fitted at the rear of a car whose distinctive silhouette made Volkswagen a household name all over the world, just as the Transporter launched in 1950 became a muchloved work horse and camper. Numerous production facilities outside Europe were already being set up in the 1950s to bring the automaker closer to the customer. Having evolved into a German automotive group with the acquisition of Auto Union GmbH and NSU Motoren werke AG in the 1960s, the dynamic market success of the Passat, Golf and Polo post1973 triggered further corporate growth towards a multibrand group: SEAT and Skoda were added in 1985 and 1991, Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti in 1998.
The brands Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Scania, that was acquired in 2008, with factories in Europe, Africa and South America pro vide a differentiated range of products spanning city vans, trucks and busses to suit the most diverse mobility require ments. The financial services pro vided by Volkswagen Financial Services AG, a company whose roots go back as far as 1949, also contribute to the automo tive success of the Volkswagen Group. Founded on strong brands, the Volkswagen Group continues its successful automotive tradi tion with fascinating products. Bolstered by another rise in unit sales to 7.1 million vehicles, the Volkswagen Group remains on course to become the worlds leading automaker by 2018 economically and ecologically.

1937 1945 May 28, 1937 Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH is established in Berlin. Early 1938 Construction of the Volkswagen plant east of Fallersleben be gins. September 16, 1938 The company name is changed to Volkswagenwerk GmbH. Between 1939 and 1945, the Volkswagen plant is re organized for the production of armaments rather than the production of civilian vehicles. The expanding armaments out put of the plant after summer 1940 leads the company to meet most of its labour needs by using forced labour from abroad. In late summer 1944, almost two thirds of the 18,000strong workforce is made up of foreign forced labourers. April 11, 1945 The American troops who enter the town put an end to the pro duction of military equipment and liberate the forced labourers.
