Property taxes should never be used to fund the purchase of land, based on speculative gains. The Provincial Government dictates that municipalities do not use taxes in this fashion. Moreover, municipalities that entertain these ideas, should perhaps be more considerate of the land developers that have already invested in our community, who are waiting for sales to occur. The City of Merritt would be wise to perhaps, encourage private investors to purchase and develop the ninety-three acres of Crown-owned land above Merritt's North bench. Municipal councils, have never had an approved mandate to spend tax dollars on speculative projects.

The most pressing issue before our School District is school completion rates. We know that most students in grade 12 successfully graduate. We also know that we have a number of students that leave school between grades 9 & 10. We need to find better ways to personalize their learning so that it is meaningful to them; so that they see the value of continuing their education. The First Nations Academy is one of many ways we are looking, and continue to look, to reengage these students. Education must be meaningful if it is to transform lives.

As TNRD Director, Area M, I care about our area and Im always open to discuss your concerns. I have initiated an animal control bylaw for the TNRD; spearheaded the Nicola Lake I.P.P. to combat Milfoil; facilitated high speed internet; led reinstatement of the Ultrasound Technician position at the N.V. Health Center; injected $310,000 for improvement projects including Smith Pioneer Park and the Lower Nicola Community Hall; supported the application for crown land to relocate Angels Animal Rescue. My top priorities are the environment invasive plants, clean water, liquid and solid waste management - economic development, health care, and education.

The trial of a 17-year old Merritt male began this week. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the case of Nasir Ahmed Khokhar, who was found stabbed 34 times in Voght Park on Sept. 25, 2009. The boy was 15 years old at the time. The teen agreed with the facts presented by Crown Council that he and Khokar had been drinking through the day before an arguement broke out between Khokar, the teen and another adult. Apparently Khokar threatened he would leave and come back with a gun. The teen stabbed Khokar three times in the stomach during an altercation that followed. The teen made self-incriminating statements to 3 others in the days that followed, leading police to him as a suspect. Police obtained search warrants for the teen's home. He lived with his mother across the street from the park where Khokar's body was found. The teen was arrested and charged with second-degree murder Oct. 1, 2009. The co-accuseds trial is scheduled for Spring 2012.
