USES OF THE WORDS SHOULD, WOULD, COULD LIKE MODALS SHOULD: The word SHOULD can be used in two different ways, basically: a. When you want to give your opinion (or suggestion) to someone: Example: 1. Tu deberias llamarlo ahora = You SHOULD call him now 2. Ella deberia decirle que lo ama = She SHOULD tell him that she loves him. 3. El deberia besarla = He SHOULD kiss her
The grammar structure for this use is: Subject + SHOULD + verb in simple way + complement

b. When you want to ask an opinion (or suggestion) to someone: Example: 1 Deberia llamarlo ahora? 2 Deberia ella decirle que lo ama? 3 Deberia el besarla?

= SHOULD I call him now? = SHOULD she tell him that she loves him? = SHUOLD he kiss her?

The grammar structure for this use is: SHOULD + Subject + verb in simple way + complement +?

Remark: The word SHOULD is sometimes used in sentences like IF, to say that something will probably happen (But just with I and we that is first person singular and plural) Example: 1. 2. 4.

Si tu compraras la casa, nosotros te ayudariamos a pagarala = SHOULD you buy the house, we will help you to pay it. Si yo fuera a la fiesta, la veria alli = SHOULD I go to the party, I will see her there. Si yo la viera alli, la invitaria a bailar = SHOULD I see her there, I will invite her to dance.

The grammar structure for this use is: SHOULD + Subject + verb in simple way + subject + WILL + verb in simple way + Complement Other uses: like WOULD (RIA) Example: 1. Lo compraria si tuviera bastante dinero = I SHOULD buy it, If I had enough money. 2. Dije que iria = I said , I SHOULD go.

= WOULD you like to go out with me? = WOULD you like to go to the movie? = WOULD he like to go out with you?

The grammar structure for this use is: WOULD + subject + LIKE TO + verb in simple way + complement +?

Remark 1:

Notice that in these sentences the word WOULD is always fallowed for the expression LIKE TO. for answering these invitations questions you should used this grammar structure: Yes / No + Subject + verb in simple way + complement.

Remark 2: Example:

1. Te gustara salir con migo? Si, si me gustaria salir con tigo. No, no me gustara salir con tigo.

= WOULD you like to go out with me? = Yes, I WOULD like to go out with you. = No, I WOULD not like to go out with you.

b. The word WOULD is also used to form the conditional future tense; in this case the word WOULD gives the ending RIA to the verbs: Example: 1. 2. 3.

SI yo estudiara, yo aprenderia Ingles = IF I studied, I WOULD learn English. SI tu me amaras, yo te besaria = IF you loved me, I WOULD kiss you. Si tu me besaras, yo the haria una bonita casa = IF you kiss me, I WOULD build you a beautiful house.

The grammar structure for this tense is: IF + subject + verb in past + comma +Subject + WOULD + verb in simple way + complement.

Remark 1: The Conditional Future tense has: una condicion irreal, contratria a la verdad + una consecuencia supuesta: Example: 1. SI tu me amaras = If you loved me, (condicion irreal, contratria al verdad) Yo te besaria = I WOULD Kiss you. (una consecuencia supuesta) Remark 2: The word WOULD is used too to form the Spanish expression Preferira thus: Example: Yo preferiria ensear = I WOULD rather teach = (Id rather teach) Yo preferiria que ella estudiara = I WOULD rather She studied = (Id rather she studied)

Nosotros podemos aprender Ingles Nosotros pudimos aprender Ingles = I CAN speak English = I COULD speak English = She CAN sing very well = She COULD sing very well = We CAN learn English = We COULD learn English

b. Like an auxiliary: Like an auxiliary this word means PODRIA, and is used to form (make) conditional tenses in Affirmative, Negative and Interrogative way thus: Example: 1. Yo PODRIA estudiar ms 2. Yo NO PODRIA estudiar ms 3. PODRIAS estudiar ms? The grammar structure for this use of the word is: Affirmative: Subject + COULD + verb in simple way + complement Negative: Subject + COULD + NOT + Verb in simple way + Complement Interrogative: COULD + Verb in simple way + Complement +? = I COULD study more = I COULD NOT study more = COULD you study more?

Remark:

for answering a question with the word COULD you should used this grammar structure:

Yes / Not + Subject + COULD + verb in simple way + complement Example: PODRIAS estudiar ms? Si, yo PODRIA estudiar ms No, yo NO PODRIA estudiar ms = COULD you study more? = Yes, I COULD you study more = No, I COULD NOT study more

FUTURE TENSES

20 1. There are two forms (ways) to express the future tenses in English: a. Simple future with (WILL): It is used to talk about something that will probably happen in the -far- future (but you are not absolutely sure about it). Example: 1. I WILL call you back tomorrow. 2. She WILL come to the party tonight. 3. We WILL go out tomorrow. The auxiliary WILL gives the Spanish ending ARE ARAS ARA REMOS ARAN. to the simple form of the verb. Example: 1. algun dia Yo trabajare 2. algun dia Tu trabajaras 3. algun dia Ella trabajara 4. algun dia El trabajara 5. algun dia Esto trabajara 6. algun dia Nosotros trabajaremos 7. algun dia Ustedes trabajaran 8. algun dia Ellos trabajaran
The grammar structure for this tense is: Affirmative: Subject + WILL + verb (in Simple way) + complement. Example:

= I WILL work some day = YOU WILL work some day = She WILL work some day = He WILL work some day = It WILL work some day = We WILL work some day = You WILL work some day = They Will work some day

algun dia Yo trabajare

= I WILL work some day

Negative: Subject + WILL + not (wont) + verb (in Simple way) + complement. Example:

algun dia Yo no trabajare

= I WILL not work some day

Interrogative: WILL + subject + verb (in simple way) + complement. Example: trabajare yo algun dia?

= WILL I work some day?

21
Other uses of the Simple future are: - To make predictions about the future. Example: 1. Some day traveling to the moon will be cheap. 2. I will vote when I am eighteen. - To make spontaneous decisions. Example: 1. OK. I will buy it! 2. I will have the shrimp cocktail. - To promise you will do something. Example: 1. I will buy you a computer if you pass all the exams. 2. I will call you when I arrive at my house. - When you ask someone to do something for you. Example: 1. Will you close that window for me, please? 2. Please, will you do the dishes for me? Yes, I will. - When you offer to do something for someone. Example: 1. Dont worry, I will take the van (camion) and help you with the moving. 2. Ok. I will buy the meat for you.

Remark: - This grammar tense is usually used with time references like: Tomorrow, next, in the future, in 5 years, one day or - With clauses with: When Example: 1. I will help you tomorrow. 2. I will visit you in the morning when you stay in your house.

22 b. Immediate Future with the expression (BE GOINT TO): the immediate future is used to talk about plans and intentions for the -immediate- future (but, if you are absolutely sure, they are going to happen). Example: 1. I am going to decorate my room tomorrow morning 2. I am sure; she is going to visit France next week. 3. I am sure; the exam is going to be tomorrow morning The grammar structure for this tense is: Subject + BE GOING TO + verb (in simple way) + complement. Example: They are going to play soccer in the afternoon

Other uses of the Simple future are:

- To make predictions based in some evidence in the present. Example: 1. Look at those clouds. It is going to rain. 2. She is very sad, she is going to cry. - When there is evidence that something is going to happen soon. Example: 1. It is going to rain. Look! That man is going to fall. 2. Watch out! , That car is going to crash (collision)

Remark:

Be going to is frequently used with time references that tell us when the actions going to happen: Example: I am going to travel at seven am. Example: I am going to travel on Sunday. I am going to travel in December. I am going to travel on December, 3rd of this year.

At + hours of the day: On + days of the week: In + months of the year: Example:

Next + Season of the time: Example: I am going to travel next summer. I am going to travel next Christmas. Gonna is the contraction of going to.
