POSITION DESCRIPTION University of Minnesota College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences Cloquet Forestry Center and Department of Forest Resources
Title: Position #: Primary Responsibilities Director of Operations Tenured Associate Professor (#9402) or Professor (9401) Department of Forest Resources and Director of Operations (#9362), Cloquet Forestry Center

The Director of Operations serves as the on-site administrator of the Cloquet Forestry Center (CFC) and the Hubachek Wilderness Research Center (HWRC) and reports to the Executive Director of the Translational Research and Education Division in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences (CFANS). The Director of Operations also serves as a member of the college's leadership council and executive committee. The Director of Operations is responsible for the management and supervision of personnel, physical resources, annual budget, and long-term strategic planning of CFC and HWRC. The person in this position will be an effective advocate and ambassador of CFC and HWRC to the University of Minnesota (UMN), CFANS, industry, government, professional organizations, conservation organizations, indigenous communities, private landowners, and other communities. Additional responsibilities will include assisting with faculty and staff professional development and coordination and facilitation of research, education, and outreach programs using a team approach. This approach is expected to involve University faculty, especially those in forest resources and related natural resource areas and including agencies such as the USDA Forest Service, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota counties, forest and related natural resource industries, conservation organizations, tribal entities and other stakeholders. The person in the position is expected to grow the CFC and HWRC programs through research and funding to enhance the regional and national stature of CFC and HWRC in close cooperation with the Universitys Department of Forest Resources.
Primary Responsibilities - Associate Professor or Full Professor

In this role, reporting is to the Head of the Department of Forest Resources Responsibilities include research, teaching, and outreach. Develop a superior research and outreach program in silviculture or a closely related area with application to major problems in applied forest ecology and management. This research would be developed in collaboration with faculty at Grand Rapids, Cloquet, and St. Paul and with clientele groups and other researchers in the region and beyond. The responsibility includes seeking and securing research funding from agency and industry sources within the state and via national and other competitive grants programs. Given an area of expertise, develop, lead and/or participate in teaching a specialized or broad course or courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level at the CFC and in St. Paul, especially those with an experiential emphasis. This responsibility includes interaction to encourage the growth of instruction by other CFANS and University programs that can take advantage of the CFC assets. The position will also participate in faculty governance, where appropriate, and provide leadership to outreach activities of the CFC, Department of Forest Resources and CFANS statewide.

The Cloquet Forestry Center: The CFC is a 3,506 research forest located in northeastern Minnesota. The CFC is one of nine research and outreach centers of CFANS. Interdisciplinary thrusts include forest productivity, climate change, forest protection, forest ecology, cold climate housing, wildlife ecology, recreation resource management and silvicultural systems research. Additional research is conducted cooperatively with USDA Forest Service, MN-DNR, MN-DA or other agencies and organizations. The CFC houses the Minnesota Tree Improvement Cooperative, the Sustainable Forests Education Cooperative and the Cloquet Regional Extension Office. The CFC is also home to annual field courses offered by the Department of Forest Resources and the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology. There are 12 permanent CFC staff officed at the Center. The HWRC is a 383-acre research forest located approximately 15 miles NE of Ely, MN (adjacent to the USDA Forest Service Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness) with two permanent resident staff and one seasonal employee. Essential Qualifications: -- Ph.D. in forest resources science and / or closely related natural resources or environment area; at least one degree in forestry. -- Evidence of professional distinction and national or international recognition in a relevant field that warrants tenure in the Department of Forest Resources. -- Strong forestry, forest science and related natural resources background. -- Demonstrated experience and success in designing and conducting research. -- Demonstrated success in refereed journal publication, applied research communications and obtaining research support. -- Demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in program planning, budgeting administration, supervision of personnel, faculty and staff development, program execution capability and oral and written communication skills. -- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and advocacy of the scientific process related to forest and related natural resources research. -- Demonstrated, experience, ability and interest in teaching. -- Demonstrated knowledge and/or experienced in working within the political and legislative process to strengthen forest and related natural resources research initiatives. -- Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain effective communications and relationships with diverse stakeholders including their organizational entities and communities. --A commitment to serving traditionally underrepresented and culturally diverse groups --Willingness and ability to travel within the state, region and beyond as appropriate. Desired Qualifications: -- A focus on some aspect of silviculture and /or forest ecology, health, soils, harvesting or related operations as they affect forest resources including forest health and productivity, habitat, recreation and water resources. -- Ability to identify and solve problems important to forest management. -- Ability to facilitate and encourage innovative and multidisciplinary team approaches to education, research and outreach programs. -- A record of incorporating diverse perspectives in teaching, research and outreach. -- Interest and experience in advising graduate students and participating in undergraduate and graduate instruction as appropriate, notably in experiential learning.

-- Expertise offering opportunities for linkages with departmental and college strengths in areas such as forest ecology, forest health, soils, resource utilization, policy and planning. -- Knowledge and experience with regional forest and related resources and University of Minnesota programs and stakeholders. -- Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain effective communications and relationships with diverse audiences including industry, government, professional organizations, conservation organizations, tribal communities, private landowner organizations, and political interests. --Ability to navigate potential conflicts and demonstrate leadership in working with diverse groups of individuals and communities Nature of Appointment: The faculty role is a 12-month (A-term) tenured appointment. The Director of Operations role is a 12-month professional and administrative (P&A) appointment with the additional responsibility and title of Director w/Faculty Rank (#9362) with an initial appointment period of three years with reappointment based upon successful performance. The two roles constitute a 100% time appointment with the Director of Operations effort estimated at 60%.
