This module concentrates on how to use Facebook for educational purposes to enhance learning.

I know many school districts block Facebook on school computers (my district included) but as more teachers and administrators experiment with using social networks for educational purposes this will change. There are many teachers out there in both K-12 and Higher Education teaching entire classes via Facebook. All of the work required for this module will be completed using our Facebook pages. There will be no discussion post on the course website for this module, we will use Facebook and there will be no assignments to hand in into a drop box, we will use Facebook. Please read pages 54-72 in the Reach text for this module. Lets take a look at some current Facebook statistics: More than 500 million active users 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day Average user has 130 friends People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook There are over 900 million objects that people interact with (pages, groups, events and community pages) Average user is connected to 80 community pages, groups and events

More than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each month. More than 550,000 active applications currently on Facebook Platform More than one million websites have integrated with Facebook Platform There are more than 200 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices People that use Facebook on their mobile devices are twice as active on Facebook than non-mobile users. Considering that Facebook was founded in 2004 its growth and acceptance as a communication tool is phenomenal and its potential for educational uses in only hampered by ones imagination and the districts firewall. I have set up my Facebook page specifically for the use in this class; it is a private page only visible to those that I add as friends. The only people that will be added as friends during this module will be you and your classmates. I will need you to send me your Facebook user name so that I may add you. I have included a tutorial on how to set up a page for educational use in this module. You can convert an existing Facebook page to a private status or you may create a new Facebook page just for this module and then delete the account when done. Or you may want to delete your account entirely because you do not like the experience or see a benefit.

Below you will find a series of websites devoted to the use and creation of Facebook accounts for educational uses, they provide a lot of useful information on how to use Facebook in education.
