INGREDIENTS FOR THE ANOINTING

ANOINTING: MEANS TO SMEAR OR RUB WITH OIL. GOD’S CHOSEN SERVANTS

(PROPHETS, KINGS, PRIESTS) WERE ANOINTED WITH OIL. THE ANOINTING
OIL WAS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT CONSECRATED AND EMPOWERED THEM AS
SERVANTS OF GOD.

THE ANOINTING ENABLES US TO DO THE IMPOSSIBLE.

THE ANOINTING IS LIKE ELECTRICITY. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS LIKE THE WIRE
THAT DELIVERS THE CURRENT AND GOD IS THE POWER SOURCE. WHEN WE
PLUG INTO THE SPIRIT WE ARE ENERGIZED BY THE POWER OF GOD. WE
CAN ALSO USE THE ILLUSTRATION THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE PIPELINE
AND THE ANOINTING IS THE WATER THAT FLOWS THROUGH THE PIPELINE.

ACTS 1:8 (THE ANOINTING EMPOWERS US TO FEARLESSLY TELL OTHERS

ABOUT JESUS)
MARK 16:19-20 (THE ANOINTING ENABLES US TO PERFORM MIGHTY SIGNS,
WONDERS AND MIRACLES)
ISAIAH 10:27 (THE ANOINTING HAS THE POWER TO DESTROY EVERY YOKE
AND REMOVE EVERY BURDEN IN OUR LIVES)

The ingredients for the anointing oil in the Old Testament times hold a great
significance for us today. There are three elements of the characteristic of God
in the anointing

Old Testament New Testament

Anointers (Samuel/Elisha) Father is the Anointer
Ones being anointed (David and Aaron) Jesus the Anointed one
Anointing Oil Holy Spirit is the Anointing

The New testament: God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and
with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of
the devil; for God was with him (Acts 10:38). Second, the Son is the Anointed.
Third, the Holy Spirit is the Anointing (I John 2:20, 27). These examples of the
triunity of the Godhead in its nature and function help us see the administration
of the anointing.

Many believers limit the anointing to only the gift, not realizing that the same
anointing teaches them concerning the nature of God. The depth of the
anointing is directly related to an individual submission to the Spirit. The
growth process in the anointing requires us to behold the character of the Lord
as in a mirror, and to be changed into the same image. This process often
involves a “breaking before a making”. We must reckon ourselves dead to sin
and alive unto God concerning our habits and human character.

As believers we desire to have the anointing of God flow freely in our lives.
The old testament ingredients for the oil of anointing signifies what God
requires from believers, so the anointing can flow freely.
The ingredients are: Myrrh, Sweet cinnamon, Sweet Calamus, Cassia and
olive oil.

PURE MYRRH – is a resin (gum) that oozed from a tiny shrub. Although it is
very bitter to taste, it produced a fragrance so pleasing that it had great value
in biblical times. Myrrh means bitter. Myrrh speaks of the office of the prophet
and therefore is most bitter. Jesus was a man of sorrow, both in His life and in
His death. Hebrews 5:8 He learned obedience by the things he suffered.

Suffering allows the anointing to be developed in us and flow out of us,

therefore we must deal with some bitter fact. A disciple is a follower, a student
of Christ.

SWEET CINNAMON – come from the bark of a tree and has a certain fragrant
sweetness. It means to erect or to stand upright. This symbolizes your stand
in a corrupt and perverted society. This represents God’s people who are
living among a corrupt and perverted society with a challenge to divinely
influence it without it corrupting you. Although everything around us many stink
we must maintain purity and sweetness. We must walk with integrity and truth
before God.

SWEET CALAMUS – Tall reed that grew in a hostile environment or miry clay.
It means a branch or a reed. Calamus speaks to us of a living and abiding
relationship with Jesus Christ as the vine is to the branches.

The sweet calamus is a rod or strength, a channel, a branch through which the
oil can flow. Like the calamus, we are living in a hostile environment that
makes it difficult to produce life. Unless we abide in the Vine and maintain a
relationship with Jesus Christ, we will not survive.

The time we spend with the Lord is priceless.

CASSIA – is found in the bark of a shrub like cinnamon. It grows in high

altitudes and possesses a little purple flower. The root word means to bow
down as in bowing before the Lord in reverent worship. Worship is one of the
most important elements of the Christian life. These times of deep adoration
will edify our spirit and keep our mind on Jesus. Worship softens the heart,
enabling us to hear God’s voice and walk in step with Him.

Cassia also implies our humbling ourselves in total surrender to God, giving
Him all glory, honor and thanksgiving.

The true anointing flows out of a heart yielded to the will of the Father.

The flower on the shrub was purple representing royalty.

OLIVE OIL – is the ingredient that bound all the spices together. This blending
together of sweet and bitter speaks of the unity involved in the holy anointing
upon His ministers.
NOTE: THOSE WHO MAKE IT THEIR AIM TO BRING THE BODY OF CHRIST
TOGETHER AS ONE WILL FIND THE ANOINTING ABIDING AND GROWING
IN THEIR LIVES AND MINISTRIES. THOSE WHO, BECAUSE OF
INSECURTIY, NEED TO BUILD THEIR OWN KINGDOMS AND CRITICIZE
OTHERS WILL FIND THE ANOINTING OF THE LORD BEGINNING TO LIFT
FROM THEM.

As the anointing oil upon God’s ministers is to perfect (mature) the saints and
draw them together in the unity of the faith.

When we think of oil we are reminded of Gethsemane which means “oil press”
and it was through the costly suffering of Christ that the holy oil of the Spirit
was provided for the church.

SO WE SEE THAT THERE WERE FIVE INGREDIENTS BLENDED

TOGETHER TO CONSTITUTE THE HOLY ANOINTING OIL. THE NUMBER
FIVE IS SIGNIFICANT, FOR IT REPRESENTS THE GRACE OF GOD IN THE
ATONEMENT. IT IS ONLY BECAUSE OF GOD’S ABUNDANT GRACE THAT
THE ANOINTING OIL IS PROVIDED.

Acts 1:8
But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye
shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and in
Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Mark 16:19-20
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven,
and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every
where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs
following. Amen.

Isaiah 10:27
And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from
off thy shoulder and his yoke from off the neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed
because of the anointing

I John 2:20,27
But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need
not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all
things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide
in him.

Acts 10:38
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who
went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for
God was with him.

Hebrew 5:8
Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he
suffered.
