This guide will help you get started with your BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger services. You can learn what the services are, how to get them and how to use them. And youll find out where to go for answers to questions that arent included here, plus links that will help you find out more. Getting started
BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger offers two separate and complementary services:

BT Communicator
With BT Communicator you can use and control a range of communication services via your PC and get more from your PC while online: turn your PC into a smart phone in the home make telephone calls* from your PC using Clic2call1 (for charges please see page 19) set up telephone calls from your home phone using Clic2connect2 (for charges please see page 19) never miss a call when youre online and your phone line is busy with Internet Call Waiting3 (for charges please see spage 19) control your calls bar outgoing calls to certain numbers with Internet Call Barring4 (for charges please see page 19) To use all these services, you need to have a BT line and subscribe to BTs chargeable features. Once signed up, you become the Key account holder and can allow up to five family members or friends to use your account as Associate account holders.

Yahoo! Messenger
With Yahoo! Messenger you can communicate freely and personalise your conversations in many ways: chat instant messaging with friends online voice chat* with other Yahoo! Messenger users see when your friends are online and let them see if you are online too store friends and contacts details in your online Address book see and be seen with webcam** send messages and attachments using BT Yahoo! Mail A BT line is not needed for Yahoo! Messenger and all the above features are free. Internet access charges may apply. Yahoo! SMS is chargeable. * For Clic2call and Voicechat, youll need a microphone and speakers, a headset or a USB phone. ** Webcam not supplied.

Before you install


Minimum requirements
To enjoy communicating at the next level, you should have at least: multimedia PC with 700MHz processor or faster* Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Millennium edition or Windows XP operating system (XP recommended) minimum 128MB RAM (256MB recommended) 16-bit Windows compatible sound card Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.01 (although it doesnt need to be your default browser) Macromedia Flash version 5.0.25 (Flash version 6+ recommended) 30MB of free space internet connection. For best call quality, we recommend a broadband connection * It may be possible to run this software on a slower PC, but degradation to voice quality may be experienced. Please note BT Communicator is not compatible with Macs. You also need a username and password. If you dont have a BT Internet, BT Openworld or BT Yahoo! username or Yahoo! ID, you can create one when you launch BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger for the first time.

Additional requirements
To make and receive calls, you will also need a microphone and speakers or a headset or a handset. If you do not have these, you can order at: www.shop.bt.com Youll also need to register as a BT Communicator user to enjoy its great calling features. Its free to register and simply requires details of your: BT residential phone number and account number BT Internet, BT Openworld or BT Yahoo! username or Yahoo! ID

Who can apply?


Anyone can apply for the free services but BT Communicators chargeable features are available only to BT residential phone customers.

Key account holders


If your BT phone bills in your name, youre the BT Communicator Key account holder and youre in control of your BT Communicator account. For example, you can: change your calling feature subscriptions subscribe to and set up Internet Call Barring see a list of chargeable phone calls And you can invite up to five other people to use your BT Communicator account.

Associate account holders


To become an Associate account holder, you need to accept an invitation from a Key account holder to make use of his or her account. When you accept an invitation to become an Associate account holder and register with us, you will be able to make calls charged to the Key account holders phone bill.

Call charges and billing


Key account holders please note: calls are charged at the same rate as other BT calls made on your home phone and are dependent upon your BT Together option. Clic2connect calls have a 1p connection charge* there are additional charges for calling features such as Internet Call Waiting3 there is no separate bill as BT Communicator calls are itemised on your normal BT phone bill, along with charges for all your optional BT features * Special offer: connection fee waived from 12th November 2004 to 18th March 20052. Managing calls made on your account


Key account holders: you have control over how your BT Communicator is used, for example, preventing your children ringing certain number types, e.g. premium-rate 09xx, mobile and international numbers BT Communicator automatically bars calls to some numbers, including all short codes, e.g. 118 500 Directory Enquiries and 999 emergency calls, 0908 and 0909 adult lines and calls to certain overseas countries Find out more There is a short set-up period for some BT Communicator features. Installation, registration and activation


Setting up BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger is a simple three-step process, with onscreen prompts to help you along the way.

Step 1. Installation
When youre downloading BT Communicator from the web site, an installation wizard will guide you through the installation and configuration process.

Step 2. Registration
Once youve installed BT Communicator on your computer, the next step is online registration. There are two registration processes, one to get a BT username and a second to subscribe to BT Communicator features. The BT Communicator features registration ensures additional identification assurance and security for your BT account. Get a BT username i) Double-click the BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger icon on your desktop. This will open the Sign In window. ii) Click on the button labelled Get a BT Username then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Yahoo! Messenger registration process. Register for BT Communicator features The BT Communicator features registration ensures additional identification assurance and security for your BT account. i) From the Messenger menu select the Register for BT Communicator features option. ii) Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the BT Communicator registration process.

Step 3. Activation
You must activate your BT Communicator account once youve registered online. When youve finished registration, you can then activate your account by calling the number you were given at the end of the online registration (confirmation was also sent to your preferred email address). Please make sure that youre calling from the BT home phone number you entered during registration. You should also make sure that the PIN issued at the end of registration is handy. (This was displayed onscreen and sent to your preferred email address.) Your telephone number must not be withheld when you call us to activate your account. If youve chosen to permanently withhold your number, simply dial 1470 before calling so that we can validate your PIN against the number youre calling from. Dialling 1470 before the number releases your telephone number for that call only. Once you've registered online, you have five days to activate your BT Communicator account before the PIN expires. If you don't input your PIN within five days, you will need to contact the BT Communicator team on 0870 242 0635 to request a new PIN.

The easiest way to start BT Communicator is to double-click the BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger icon on your desktop. Please sign-in with your username and password. (e.g. user@btinternet.com) If you experience a problem with your sign in, please check to make sure that youre online. Audio set-up
To make and receive calls, your computers audio must be set up correctly with a microphone and speakers or headset attached to your sound card. Please test your computers audio by running the Audio Set-up Wizard. You can access this from the Yahoo! Messenger Help menu or the BT Communicator Help menu.

Making a call
You can use BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger to call most Local, National, Mobile and International numbers* To make a phone call using your BT Communicator, you can choose: Clic2call1 using your PC and headset or microphone and speakers, or Clic2connect2 using your normal phone but setting up the call via your PC You can enter the number you want to call (see Selecting a number to call) then choose either Clic2call or Clic2connect to make the call, or you can select your call option before you enter the number. Then simply click the Call button. For more details, please see Call using your PC (Clic2call) and Call using your phone (Clic2connect) The first time you make a call using your BT Communicator, the default setting is Clic2call. On subsequent use, default is the previous setting.

Selecting a number to call


To select a number to call using either Clic2call or Clic2connect, you need to open the dialler window. There are two ways you can do this. The first way is by opening the dialler window pre-populated with the phone number you wish to call. There are several ways to do this: right click on a contact within the Friends List view and choose Call from the menu click on the Call button within the Friends List view, with a contacts name selected in the Friends List click on the Call button from within an instant message dialogue window click on the Call button from within an SMS text messaging window click on a call icon from within your BT Communicator Address book select a BT Communicator Address book entry and click the Call button right click on a BT Communicator Address book entry select a BT Communicator Address book entry, expand the details of this entry and click on any of the contact numbers stored there click on an entry in your Recent calls list right click the system tray click on a BT Call Now button on a web site or in an email click on a number obtained from 118 500 Directory Enquiries The second way of opening the dialler window is by clicking on the Call button in the Friends List window, without selecting anyone from your Friends List. * Call exclusions and limitations apply.

Call using your PC (Clic2call)


You can make calls from your PC with BT Communicator to most Local, National and International numbers*. To make a call using your PC, simply open the dialler window as described in Selecting a number to call or enter the numbers directly into the phone using either the dial pad or your keyboard. Please make sure you use the full number starting with 01 or 02 for fixed-line numbers, 07 for mobile numbers, etc. in the same way you would for a mobile phone. Click on the Clic2call icon then click the Call button to place your call. Please note: you can enter the number you want to call, then choose either Clic2call or Clic2connect to make the call, or you can select your call option before you enter the number. When your call is answered, youll see the calling status of your call in the display panel and the call timer will start. (At the same time as your call is answered, your status in Yahoo! Messenger will automatically display on a call so that any contacts can see that youre busy). Calls using Clic2call are limited to 60 minutes, with alerts as the time limit approaches. You can immediately redial if you want to continue your conversation. There is no time limit on the length of Clic2connect calls. When your call is finished, please remember to click the Clear button even if the other caller hangs up, or you may continue to be charged for up to two minutes. * Call exclusions and limitations apply. Please note: you cannot make emergency 112 or 999 calls using BT Communicator

Call using your phone (Clic2connect)


Clic2connect allows you to use BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger to set up telephone calls between your home telephone and most Local, National and International numbers*. Clic2connect is available to you if you are: a broadband customer; or a dial-up customer who accesses the internet without using your registered telephone line. To set up a call from your home phone, simply open the dialler window as described in Selecting a number to call or enter the number using either the dial pad or your keyboard. Please make sure you use the full number starting with 01 or 02 for fixedline numbers, 07 for mobile numbers, etc. in the same way you would for a mobile phone. Click on the Clic2connect icon then click the Call button to place your call. Please note: you can enter the number you want to call, then choose either Clic2call or Clic2connect to make the call, or you can select your call option before you enter the number. When you click on the Call button, youll see a message advising that your registered line is being called. Once you answer your registered phone, Clic2connect will start to set up a call to the number you have called. Your call display panel will then return to the ready state so you can make a Clic2call at the same time if you want to. There is no time limit on the length of Clic2connect calls. BT Call Now
Stay in touch and make it easier for people to call you with one click on your BT Call Now button and no more dialling. BT Call Now is a web button an icon located on a web page or email. When clicked on, a BT Call Now button opens BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger (if installed). The dialler window will already show the number chosen by the creator of the BT Call Now button ready for your use. One click is all you need to make the call.

BT Call Now makes it easy for you to call and be called


To call: when you see a BT Call Now button that you want to use, simply click on it. Your BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger will open and the dialler window will show a number ready for you to call. You can make this call using either Clic2call or Clic2connect. Calls made using a BT Call Now button are charged at the same rate as any other similar call from BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger. To be called: if you want to make it easy to be called, simply add a BT Call Now button to your emails or web pages and your contacts can click on this icon to activate their BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger. Your chosen phone number will be shown in their call dialler window, ready to be used with either Clic2call or Clic2connect. If you would like to set up a BT Call Now button for your web site or email program, please go to the BT Call Now web site.

Set up a BT Call Now button


There is no charge for setting up a BT Call Now button. Anyone can place BT Call Now buttons on their web site or in their email but only BT Communicator software users will be able to make calls using them. Please note: certain types of numbers cannot be called using BT Call Now. Please see Call Barring for details. To help prevent unexpected call charges, BT Communicator with Yahoo! Messenger will show an alert, when appropriate, that the number about to be called is a premium rate or international number. Additionally, premium rate numbers rented only from BT may be used when creating a BT Call Now button.

Call charges
Calls made using BT Communicator are charged to your BT telephone account at the same rate as those from your home phone in line with your BT Together calling package. If you change your BT Together calling package, your BT Communicator call charges will be amended at the same time. On your BT phone bill: calls made using your PC appear on your bill as Clic2call. calls set up via your PC and made using your home phone appear on your bill as Clic2connect. Address book
You can save numbers (and other contact details) in your Address book at any time and you can quickly make Clic2call and Clic2connect calls to numbers stored in your Address book. Call Barring
Call Barring enables the Key account holder to prevent certain call types being made from BT Communicator. There are two types of barring on BT Communicator: Internet Call Barring System barring

Internet Call Barring4


Internet Call Barring, which enables you to prevent certain types of call being made from BT Communicator, is activated automatically when you subscribe to BTs Calling Features Call Barring Service. Theres a short set-up time and, once set up, you manage your Internet Call Barring list from your BT Communicator settings. You can bar the following number types from being called from BT Communicator: National rate numbers (087x) Mobile phone numbers (07xx) International numbers (00xxx) Premium rate calls (09xx) Please note: calls to 0908 and 0909 numbers are permanently barred. Internet Call Barring is available only to BT Communicator customers who subscribe to BTs Calling Features Call Barring Service and is controlled by the person whose name appears on the BT phone bill. Internet Call Barring is NOT linked to your BT home phone line call barring settings. Any call barring settings you may have on your BT home phone line will not be affected by those you set up for your BT Communicator and vice versa.

System Call Barring4


System barring stops all customers from dialling certain types of numbers. These include: short codes such as 999, 150 or 118 500 numbers beginning 0909 (Premium rate numbers used for adult services) certain International codes

Recent calls list


You can view your Recent calls list by either clicking on the button or accessing it from the Actions menu. You can also see information about your recent outgoing and incoming calls (subject to Internet Call Waiting and BT Calling Features Caller Display).

118 500 Directory Enquiries


This FREE* service allows you to use your BT Communicator to search, by name, for personal and business telephone numbers on the internet using BTs 118 500 Directory Enquiries service. You can also search for a business by type. Once youve found a number, you can call it using Clic2call or Clic2connect, or save it in your Address book for use later. *Online call charges apply

You can carry out up to 100 free 118 500 Directory Enquiries online searches a day as a BT Communicator customer. There is no limit to the number of searches for a business by type. * Online call charges apply when using this online service. 118 500 Directory Enquiries can also be accessed over the phone. Calls to 118 500 (UK Directory Enquiries, previously 192) cost 15p per minute, billed per second, plus a 40p service connection charge. All call charges include VAT and are from BT landlines (excluding payphones). Other mobile and network charges may vary. Prices correct at time of publication November 2004 but may be modified from time to time. Nothing in this publication forms part of any contract.

Other benefits
Redial you can redial the last number you called from BT Communicator by clicking the Redial last number button on the dialler. Withhold or show your phone number you can choose to withhold or show your phone number when making calls from your PC from either Clic2call or Click2connect by selecting the Withhold my number and Show my number radio buttons. Your number will be displayed if the person youre calling has Caller Display or ISDN equivalent. Volume there are two volume sliders on the BT Communicator phone: one controls the volume of your microphone and the other controls the audio volume. Clicking either icon mutes that device.

Incoming call waiting alert

Receiving a call
To receive phone calls via your PC, you must subscribe to Internet Call Waiting3. When youre online and your phone line is busy, youll be alerted to an incoming call with audio and onscreen alerts.

Internet Call Waiting


If youve subscribed to Internet Call Waiting as one of your features, youll be alerted to an incoming call if your registered telephone is busy, i.e. if youre using your telephone line to access the internet or if your broadband-enabled line is busy on another call. The number of the person calling you will be shown and, if you subscribe to BT Calling Features Caller Display and if their details are stored in your Address book, so will their name. If this number isnt already in your Address book, you can add it if you want. A number unknown message means that the number has not been made available by the originating network and a number withheld message means the caller has chosen to withhold their phone number. When an incoming call alert is received, you can: answer the call by clicking the Answer button click the Divert button (which diverts the call to your answering service) wait for it to automatically divert to your answering service after 20 second To end the call, click the Clear button. If youve subscribed to Internet Call Waiting3 but you want to stop alerts from disturbing or distracting you at certain times, you can turn off your alerts by using Do not disturb which can be found under the Actions menu.

Voice Mail answering service


To activate Internet Call Waiting you must have an answering service, either from BT, such as Call Minder and Answer 1571*, or from another service provider. For more details, please go to BT Calling Features. * Some services are not compatible with BTs Messaging Services. Some social alarm and burglar alarm equipment may not be compatible with BTs Messaging Service, please check with your supplier When you divert an Internet Call Waiting call to your answering service or ignore a call so that it automatically diverts to your answering service, the caller may leave you a message.

Picking up your messages


You can pick up messages in two ways. You can access your answering service in the normal way and you can pick up your 1571 Voice Mail via the Clic2call service on your BT Communicator. This means that wherever you have access to an internet-connected computer, you can log in and stay in touch. And, if youre a dial-up customer using BT Communicator at home, youll no longer need to disconnect from the internet to check your Voice Mail. Its easy-to-use, just click the Voice Mail icon in the dialler window and youll be connected to the Voice Mail service for your registered number.

Calls to your 1571 Voice Mail made from your BT Communicator are FREE if you receive your telephone service from BT. Other service providers may charge. Calls to Voice Mail made via BT Communicator will not appear in your Recent calls list This service allows you to access only BT Voice Mail products, or products that are usually accessed by calling 1571 from your registered home phone.
