CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. Background The general aim for the students to learn English is to be able to communicate in English. One of the most important things that the students must learn is grammar in order to make their English getting progress. It is essentially because the mastery of English will not be perfect without mastering grammar. However, some of the educators suppose that teaching grammatical is not the main priority in learning English nowadays. In their opinion, students are able to communicate in English even without having deep understanding about grammar. The most important they are able to understand and catch what their partner mean. In fact, grammar can help the students to maintain the use of formal English. If the students have better knowledge of grammar, they will feel

confident when they speak and write. Therefore, a student who has sufficient knowledge of grammar is potentially able to master the language easily. He is able to use the language grammatically is short grammar extremely on important axpect facility communication. Especially in simple future tense that in Indonesia this sentence seldom happened. The writers choose this sentence in this research because the writers assume students are difficult to understand to use this tenses in their daily activity. There are some problems for learner in learning English. First, what is the meaning of tenses? The second, how to use tenses in writing sentences and some of the confusion about the differences between one tenses with others in making easy to learn for the students. One of the important aspects of the sentences that must be learnt is grammar. There are two kinds of factors, which affect someone in learning English: internal and external factors come from the learners themselves, such as motivation, interest, aptitude, and intelligence, while external factors come from outside of the learners, such as the situation and condition of the environment,

learning materials, and the teachers ability in handling the English teaching and learning program. Therefore, the teachers should have several special tricks to make their students motivated to learn English. The learners need a way of teaching that is enjoyable and practical so that finally they can integrate themselves into English, for example singing English songs can get the students integrated to English. It is assumed that they can contribute many things to improve students capabilities, especially in their skill elements, such as grammar enrichment, listening and speaking. Simple future also function as conditional sentence type I Type I Function: to suppose something in the future (future possible) If simple present simple future If clause main clause

B. Teaching grammar 1. The Principles Of Teaching Grammar In teaching grammar there are some principles that have to known by teacher in order to make easier students understanding in grammar especially in simple future tense. Grammar is better approached through principles than roles. Four basic, sequential principles answer almost all issues: a functional sense of the eight parts of speech, the integrity of the clause, ellipsis, and restriction. Through awareness of these principles, teachers and students alike might dispel the mystery of grammar and thereby improve their sentence craft. 2. Song as teaching media Teaching media is needed in the teaching learning processes to help the students become active. Media is derived from the Latin word medium that means between. The writer assumes that teaching media are the means that are used by the teacher to convey the teaching material to the students. It can be printed or audio visual and the tools. Media is also considered as instructional system of teaching learning process. So instructional medium is also called teaching aid. It is used in order to facilitate the teacher to achieve the goal teaching learning process. The teacher can select the media from the traditional ones up to the modern ones. In doing this study the writer uses songs as the media in improving students understanding about present perfect tense. And here the writer discusses more about songs first. In our daily life, we are surrounded by songs. A song is like a magic that can hypnotize us, therefore, when we hear the songs we can be brought into the songs. For example, when someone is listening to a song, he can be brought into the story of the lyrics and the melody will play his emotion of feeling. Sometimes we did not realize that we could sing the songs without learning how to sing the songs in a certain way. From the songs we can learn many things, for example we can get some more new words, and we also could

learn how the words are pronounced. As songs are having magical effects, we can use songs in the learning process. According Harmer 1states that music is a powerful stimulus for student engagement precisely because it speaks directly to our emotions while still allowing us to use our brains to analyze it and its effects if we so wish. Songs are a good resource for English teaching. First, they are funny. Second, they promote mimics, gestures, etc. associated to the meaning. Third, they are good to introduce suprasegmental phonetics (stress, rhythm and intonation). Fourth, students play a participative role. Fifth, they can be applied to comprehension stages (listening) or production (singing). Sixth, there are songs for all levels and ages. Seventh, students learn English very easily, through echoic memory. C. Song 1. The Definition of a Song Before talking about the effectiveness of songs as a media in learning language, here the writer quotes some definitions of a song from some sources: A short musical composition with words; "a successful musical must have at least three good songs"2
That

which is sung or uttered with musical modulations of the voice, whether of a

human being or of a bird, insect, etc

2. Selection of song When the teacher will apply songs in her / his teaching learning process, she /he should know what kind of song she would bring into the class. This is the problem if the teacher wants to use songs to her class and the best way is to use popular songs that familiar with the students. Teachers then can choose songs, which they like and appropriate to the topic and subject matter. In this case, the writer takes two songs related to the topic. The themes suggested for the tenth grade is social live. The objective of the English subject in Senior High School is that the students can communicate through written or

spoken form to solve their daily problems. In doing this study, the writer chooses the songs about description with the themes social live. The subject of the study is the student of the first year in the senior high school. So, the writer thinks that the songs Never Say Never and We Will Not Go Down are appropriate for them. Those two songs are not too childish and not too complex. However, it is also better for the teacher to use the songs that can describe about the culture of people English spoken language.
