extended features of the Arria GX
family including increased
performance and functionality
of the transceivers to drive
serial interfaces at speeds up to
3.125 Gbps.
Key Features
Table 1 gives a family overview
and lists the resources available,
table 2 shows the new and
enhanced protocol support of
Arria GX highlighted in green.
In addition to these standard
protocols, Arria GX now offers
the ability to develop your own
proprietary, serial-based intellectual
property (IP) using the basic mode
of the Arria GX transceiver.
Applications
In many applications, the fast FPGA
fabric and Digital Signal Processing

FPGA Design Security Solution Using
a Secure Memory Device
To clone an entire FPGA design
is not very difcult as the
conguration bitstream of RAM-
based FPGAs can easily be
captured and copied. In order to
protect an FPGA design, some
Altera
III or Stratix
IV
GX are equipped with embedded
encryption that encodes the
conguration bitstream. However,
low-cost FPGA families such as
Cyclone
devices
(AT88SCxxxx) that are based on
a reliable E
2
PROM technology. It
is almost impossible to physically
determine memory contents in
an unauthorized die-level attack.
Fig.1 shows the physical layers of
CryptoMemory.
Using the Identication, Friend
or Foe (IFF), the entire design
is disabled until the FPGA and
CryptoMemory are authenticated
by both sides. Meanwhile, some
different key data can be saved
in the multi-zone. The read/write
of such data will be protected
by encrypted password and
communication. These zones are
extremely useful if some sensitive
data or even whole applications
need to be protected.

AVR32 UC3B Family
Low-Power 32-Bit RISC with USB
On-The-Go
The AVR32 based UC3B family
from Atmel is optimised for low
power and low pin-count. The
UC3B can run up to 60 MHz with
very low power consumption. The
impressive performance with up to
1.38 Dhrystone Mips/MHz and only
1.3 mW/MHz power consumption
combined with extensive DSP
support from the AVR32 core
makes the UC3B family the rst
choice for portable applications.
With either USB OTG or Device on
board, it is possible to implement
everything from a simple serial
CDC class to a mass-storage class
enabling an easy connection to
either a PC or a USB Flash disk.
The devices are delivered with a
pre-programmed bootloader. The
bootloader is based on the USB
DFU class and it can program
256 Kbytes in just 2 seconds!
The family offers various Flash
densities. By the end of 2008
devices with up to 512 Kbytes of
Flash will be available.
The UC3B family is supported
by Atmels AVR32 Studio and
includes support for all peripherals
through the free AVR32 Software
Framework. Debugging is included
on-chip via JTAG or the advanced
Nexus interface with the JTAG-ICE

AT88SC016
Plug-and-Play Crypto Chip for
Host-Side Security
Instead of using standard Flash
memory to store secret keys,
designers can take advantage of
the plug-and-play convenience
of this device. By using the
CryptoCompanion chip designers
do not have to design or test the
cryptographic algorithms.
AT88SC016 is the perfect
companion chip to CryptoRF
and
CryptoMemory
device family (CRF).
To validate the authenticity of a
consumable or replaceable item
(client) connected to a system
(host), there must be some
secret information stored in the
client as well as the host. The
CryptoMemory and CryptoRF
devices provide a secure location
to store the secret data in the client,
whereas the CryptoCompanion chip
provides a way to securely store it
in the host.
CryptoCompanion chip stores
these secrets in an obscured
way in non volatile memory and
contains all necessary circuitry to
process authentication, password
and encryption/decryption actions
specied in the CRF datasheet. In
this manner, the secrets never have
to be revealed. The AT88SC016
securely manages up to 16 host
keys. The CryptoCompanion chip
executes all host-side operations
including mutual authentication,
data encryption, rmware integrity
verication, and generation of
Message Authentication Codes
(MAC) for secure communication.

AT91SAM9G20
90 nm Version of the ARM9,
AT91SAM9260
If you loved the AT91SAM9260,
you will be crazy about the new
AT91SAM9G20 from ATMEL. With
the same feature set and being pin-
compatible with the AT91SAM9260,
the AT91SAM9G20 achieves half
the power consumption at twice
the clock frequency. Additionally,
the AT91SAM9G20 offers more
cache, more embedded SRAM
and improved features including
an enlarged Ethernet FIFO and
error correction for external
NAND Flash. The AT91SAM9G20
is targeted for high performance
embedded applications with high
constraints on power consumption
as it only consumes 80 mW in full
power mode with all peripherals
activated. The device is based on
an ARM926EJ-S core which comes
with an MMU in order to support
advanced operating systems. It
gives a high level of performance
due to an operating frequency of
400 MHz, 32 Kbytes of data cache,
32 Kbytes of instruction cache. The
performance is also increased by
using a six layer 32-bit AHB matrix
and many DMA channels, which
allows for a high data rate transfer
on the on-chip bus.

XMEGA
8/16-Bit High Performance Low
Power Flash Microcontrollers
The new XMEGA family
from Atmel brings the 8/16-bit
microcontrollers up to a higher
level of system performance.
Not all applications need the
full computing power of a 32-bit
architecture often resulting in lower
EMC performance, higher software
and system overhead. The 4-channel
DMA as well as the 8-channel Event
System are able to ofoad the
processor resulting in more CPU
time for other software parts and
lower power consumption. The
DMA is able to transfer from 1 byte
up to 16 Mbytes of data in a single
transfer between any locations
in the data memory space while
the Event System enables inter-
peripheral communication resulting
in a predictable and latency-free
system.
For applications needing analog
performance the XMEGA includes
a 2 Msps, 12-bit ADC, a 1 Msps,
12-bit DAC and minimum 2 analog
comparators.
The XMEGA is also applicable for
hand held applications. Thanks to
the 2
nd

ASMT-QxBx - 0.5 W PLCC-4
LEDs for Decorative and Mood Lighting
Full Color Range High Drive Current
This new range of half-watt PLCC-4
LEDs offers the ideal solution for
decorative and mood lighting
applications and is available in
the full color range. The improved
package is based on the industry
standard PLCC-4 platform (3.2 x
2.8 x 1.9 mm) and enables a higher
drive current of 150 mA.
Higher drive current is achieved
through the enhanced heat
dissipation capability allowing the
LED to operate at up to +110 C
ambient temperature. The package
is highly reliable and has a long
lifetime due to enhanced silicone
resin material and a very low
thermal resistance of only 60 K/W
(junction-to-pin).
The high light output at a wide
viewing angle (120) provides a
good light mixing even at short
distances from the package. For the
white colors, Avago introduced a
new, tighter color binning fullling
the demands of lighting customers.
All the above makes it an ideal light
source for decorative and general
illumination applications, channel
or counter lighting as well as
advertisement panel backlighting.
The small size of the package
enables higher packaging density
over a given area compared to
other half-watt solutions available
on the market. This, for example,
helps to signicantly increase the
resolution of a screen in a signage
application.
The 0.5 W PLCC-4 family is fully
AEC-Q101 qualied and can be
used for interior automotive
lighting applications such as dome,
map and reading lamps as well
as exterior signaling applications,
such as tail lights or side repeaters.

ACPL-333J
2.5 A Gate Drive Optocoupler with
Active Miller Clamp and Auto-Reset Desat
Like the ACPL-332J, the ACPL-333J
is a 2.5 A (max.) output current,
intelligent gate driver and a highly
integrated power control device
with all necessary components
for a complete isolated IGBT/
MOSFET gate drive circuit with
fault protection and feedback. The
only difference between these
two devices is the auto-reset for
the DESAT state. In the ACPL-333J
device, the driver will automatically
reset the FAULT pin after a xed
mute time of 25 s.
An optically isolated power output
stage drives IGBTs with power
ratings of up to 150 A and 1200 V.
The active Miller clamp function
eliminates the need of negative
gate drive in most applications and
allows the use of simple bootstrap
supply for the high side driver.
During turn-off, the gate voltage is
monitored and the clamp output is
activated when V
GATE
goes below
2 V (relative to V
EE
). The clamp is
disabled when the LED input is
triggered again.
During power-up the Under Voltage
Lockout (UVLO) feature monitors
the power stage supply voltage
to prevent the application of
insufcient gate voltage to the IGBT
by forcing the ACPL-33xJs output
low. Once the output is in high
state, the Desaturation detection
feature (DESAT) of the ACPL33xJ
monitors the collector voltage
of the IGBT and triggers a local
fault shutdown sequence if the
voltage exceeds a predetermined
threshold. Thus UVLO and DESAT
work together to provide constant
IGBT protection.

APDS-9300
Digital Ambient Light Photo Sensor
The APDS-9300 is a miniature, low
voltage photo sensor with a digital
output. It converts ambient light
intensity to a digital I

signal.
The device is composed of one
broadband (visible plus infrared)
photodiode and one infrared
photodiode and two integrating
ADCs. These ADCs convert the
photodiode currents to a digital
signal which represents the
irradiance measured on each
channel.
This signal can then be directly
processed by a microcontroller
where luminance (ambient light
level, in lux) is derived using an
empirical formula to approximate
the human-eye response.
Unlike standard photodiodes
or phototransistors, ambient
light sensors lter IR and UV
wavelengths, allowing applications
to accurately control their
brightness as close as possible to
the human eye perception.

ACPL-C78A/-C780/-C784
Isolation Amplier with Differential
Analog Output
The ACPL-C78A/C780/C784
isolation ampliers are designed
for current sensing in electronic
motor drives. In principle the
ACPL-C780 has the same features
as the HCPL-7800 but is tted
into a much smaller package.
A differential output voltage is
created on the isolated side of
the optical isolation barrier and
this differential output voltage
is proportional to the measured
current and can be converted into
a single ended signal by using an
op-amp. Since common mode
voltage-swings of several hundred
volts in tens of nanoseconds are
common in switching inverters
and motor drives, the ACPL-C78x
is designed to ignore very high
common mode transient slew rates
up to at least 10 kV/s.
The high CMR capability of the
ACPL-C78x isolation amplier
provides the precision and stability
needed to accurately monitor
motor current in high noise
motor control environments. The
ACPL-C78x family gives a robust
and accurate solution for current
sensing applications. It has a well
dened accuracy over temperature
range.
This isolation amplier (ACPL-C78x)
can also be used for general
analog signal isolation applications
requiring high accuracy under
similar conditions, whereas in
general applications the HCPL-7800
is recommended.
The ACPL-C78x family offers a
very good isolation mode noise
rejection as well as excellent offset
and gain accuracy and stability
over time and temperature. As it
is provided in a stretched SO-8
package it meets the worldwide
safety standards regulations. The
supply voltage is 4.5...5.5 V and
the operating temperature meets
industrial specication -40+85 C.

MGA-30x16/ALM-31x22/ALM-32x20
0.5 W, 1 W and 2 W RF Power Amplier
Families
Avago Technologies new high
linearity power ampliers
are ideally suited for cellular
and WiMAX infrastructure
receivers in macro/micro/pico/
femto base stations. The good
OIP3 performance and the
exceptionally good PAE at 1 dB gain
compression point is achieved by
Avago Technologies proprietary
0.25 m GaAs enhancement-mode
pHEMT process.
Due to the adjustable, temperature
compensated internal bias circuit
the device can be used in either
class A or class AB operation. For
the complete frequency range of
750 MHz up to 3.9 GHz a common
footprint and layout can be used for
the 3 different power classes.
Ease of design due to the
integration of bias and matching
circuits into these products makes
them very attractive to designers
working on transmit chains in this
frequency range. All amplier
versions incorporate minimal
performance variation across the
complete operating temperature
range (-40...+85 C).

capable of driving discrete triacs.
FOD4216 and FOD4218 utilise a
high efciency infrared emitting
diode which offers improved
trigger sensitivity. These devices
are built into a standard 6-pin dual
in-line (DIP) package.
Most triac drive optocouplers in
the market are monolithic devices,
because both SCRs, which form the
triac function, are integrated into a
single silicon photodetector chip.
This helps to obtain a compact
assembly but reduces dv/dt
performance due to shared charge
stored in the common substrate
of the two integrated SCRs. The
FOD42xx has two separate SCR
chips which eliminate leakage
current through the substrate.
This greatly improves dv/dt
performance.
These ICs incorporate an active
dv/dt clamp circuit, which means
that when a fast transient is present
on the power mains and the LED
is turned off, the trigger circuit
of the triac driver is disabled to
eliminate false triggering. Power
triacs and their driving optocouplers
generally require an RC network to
improve the optocouplers static
and commutating dv/dt. The RC
network eliminates false ring of
the optocoupler triac when driving
inductive loads. This RC circuit is
referred to as a snubber circuit. Due
to the high commutating and static
dv/dt immunity (10 kV/s min.) of
the FOD42XX devices no additional
noise ltering is required. This allows
the elimination of the snubber circuit
across the triac driver. Removing
the snubber network not only saves
costs it also saves time and effort
calculation the RC values. Since
the power factor of loads and noise
coming from the mains are usually
unknown, these RC values often have
to be determined in a trial-and-error
approach on the bench. In addition,

using devices allowing a snubber-
less operation, power consumption
can be reduced as the RC snubber
network consumes power, even
when the triac driver is off. In a
typical application, a 0.1 F snubber
capacitor conducts about 10 mA of
standby current; therefore without
the snubber capacitor greener
solutions can be developed.
FOD420x devices have a maximum
I
FT
rating of 2 mA while the
FOD421x devices have a maximum
I
FT
rating of 1.3 mA. These values
are signicantly lower than the
typical 5 mA or higher maximum
ratings for monolithic triac drivers.
The low I
FT
rating of FOD42XX
devices allow for a signicant
reduction of current supplied to
the LED of the optocoupler, hence
reducing power consumption.
The 1.3 mA trigger threshold
is also within the capability of
CMOS gate drivers which makes
buffers unnecessary. FOD4208
and FOD4218 are rated for 800 V
minimum blocking voltage while
equivalent monolithic random
phase devices are rated at 600 V or
below. An 800 V rating is important
for applications running from the
mains, which have to withstand
a peak to peak voltage of 480 V.
The use of 600 V devices in these
applications often do not allow for
enough noise margin, resulting in
random device failures.

FAN7710
Ballast Control IC for Compact
Fluorescent Lamps
The FAN7710 is a ballast control
IC for Compact Fluorescent Lamps
(CFL). It is a true system-in-a-
package solution. Board space
is saved because only a small
number of external components are
required. The on-chip combination
of two 550 V MOSFETs and one
high-side 625 V gate driver circuit
is the result of Fairchilds unique
high-voltage process. The device
withstands internal high-voltage
stress and delivers 20 W to the
lamp at 310 V. Furthermore it
incorporates a preheating and
ignition function, controlled by a
user-selected external capacitor
increasing lamp life.
Switch operation is detected after
ignition-mode through an internal
active Zero-Voltage Switching
(ZVS) control circuit. This enables
the detection of an open-lamp
condition, without external
circuitry. It also prevents stress on
the MOSFETs. The built-in high-side
driver has a common-mode noise
cancellation circuit that provides
robust operation against noise
intrusion.

SG6859A
Low-Cost, Green-Mode PWM
Controller for Flyback Converters
The SG6859A is a sophisticated
PWM controller for yback
converters. It has several
enhancements to obtain low
standby-power of switch-mode
power supplies.
An off-time modulation function
lowers the switching frequency
during light load conditions. This
green-mode function enables the
power supplies to meet the strictest
power saving requirements. The
BiCMOS process results in very low
start-up current of just 9 A
and a low operating current of
3 mA. Built-in synchronised slope
compensation ensures the stability
of peak current-mode control.
Internal compensation provides
constant output power limit over
an AC input voltage range

544 Kbytes of Flash, 3 CAN Interfaces
Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe
(FME) is expanding its family
of 32-bit RISC MCUs with the
new MB91F465BB. Designed in
close co-operation with major
automotive customers worldwide,
the MB91F465BB inherits the
high-performance core of Fujitsus
proven MB91460 family and
incorporates powerful peripheral
functions and features that support
a wide range of automotive and
industrial applications. Modern
automotive designs demand higher
computing power combined with a
high degree of integration. Efcient
data collection, data processing, and
distribution are essential and need
a large number of interfaces such
as CAN and LIN as well as a large
memory capacity.
A 100 MHz PLL clock circuit
minimises power consumption by
dynamically switching off unused
clock trees. Further power saving
features such as an integrated
32 kHz sub-clock oscillator in
conjunction with standby modes
such as stop and sleep are
included. Security and safety
applications are supported by an
internal clock supervisory circuit,
which automatically switches to an
internal RC-oscillator as back-up in
the event of a main clock failure.
The MB91F465BB comes in a RoHS-
compliant 144-pin QFP package,
functions over the automotive
temperature range and operates on
a supply voltage of 3...5.5 V using
the internal voltage regulator.

On One Chip
The MB96F338U is the latest
member of the 16FX family of
powerful 16-bit microcontrollers
developed for automotive and
industrial applications.
The ability to drive USB devices
with a microcontroller is an
increasingly important feature.
Standard USB memory sticks,
for example, are being used to
store data or to update rmware
of different applications. Fujitsus
USB interface with MiniHost
functionality combines a USB
interface function with the ability to
drive one USB device at a time.
The Softune Workbench for 16-bit
microcontrollers already supports
the MB96F338U. USB low-level
drivers (developed by Fujitsu and
Thesycon) are offered free of

1ED020I12-F
EICEDriver - Single IGBT/FET Driver
with Galvanic Isolation and Status Feedback
The 1ED020I12-F is an advanced
IGBT/FET driver providing galvanic
isolation through integrated
coreless transformers for both
the driver and the status path.
The inputs and outputs can be
connected directly to a DSP or
microcontroller using 5 V CMOS
levels to achieve high noise
immunity. The 1ED020I12-F
includes an IGBT de-saturation
protection with a FAULT status
output, as well as a READY status
output reporting if the device
operates correctly.
The FET structure in IGBTs/FETs
contains a Miller capacitor, which
can induce a dangerous parasitic
turn-on at a high dV/dt transient
created during IGBT turn-off.
An active Miller clamp function
prevents this from happening
and avoids the need of negative
gate driving in most applications
allowing the use of a simple
bootstrap supply for the high
side driver. The rail-to-rail driver
output enables the user to provide
easy clamping of the IGBT gate
voltage during a short circuit of the
IGBT and reduces the total power
dissipation of the 1ED020I12-F.

Coreless Transformer Isolated
8-Channel 0.625 A High-Side Switch
The ISO1H801G is a galvanically
isolated 8-bit interface in P-DSO-36
package providing 8 fully protected
high-side power switches capable
of handling currents up to 625
mA. An 8-bit parallel/serial MCU
compatible interface allows
connecting the IC directly to a
system. The input interface also
supports a direct control mode and
is designed to operate with 5/3.3 V
CMOS compatible levels.
The data transfer from input to
output side is realised by the
integrated Coreless Transformer
technology (CLT).
The idea of the coreless
transformer technology is to
integrate the two coils of a
transformer into an IC. While a
discrete transformer needs a
core to direct the magnetic ux,
the coils in an IC can be placed
closely enough that the core
can be spared.
Main advantages of this
technology over optoisolation are:
No degradation over time
Gain reliability
High temperature range
Very fast transmission
(10...100 MHz) and low power
consumption
Key Features

Tire Pressure Sensor for High
Pressure Applications
There is no doubt that Tire Pressure
Monitoring Systems (TPMS)
improve vehicle safety. Installation
of TPMS became mandatory in
August 2007 on all passenger
cars and light duty trucks sold in
the USA. Additionally there is a
strong nancial incentive for TPM
in trucks. Running on underinated
tires results in shorter tread life
and higher fuel consumption.
Tests conducted by Goodyear
have shown that just 15% under-
ination of steer, drive and trailer
tires results in an approximately 8%
drop in expected tread mileage and
2.5% decrease in miles per gallon.
Tire and gas are major contributors
to the running costs of a truck eet,
therefore TPMS adds not only
security features but also
a strong economic value to eet
management.
Inneons SP30T high pressure
range TPM sensor is designed for
SUV and truck applications.
The SP30T integrates a
microcontroller, EEPROM, an LF
receiver for triggering, an A/D
converter, an accelerometer and
general purpose I/O pins. The
sensor comes in a PG-DSOS P-14
package. A fully autonomous
pressure and temperature
measurement system is created
by simply adding a battery, an RF
transmitter IC, an antenna and
some discretes.
The exceptional ability of the
Inneon TPMS sensors of
contactless communication
and signal transmission opens
new possibilities outside of
automotive applications. For
example, in industrial applications
with distributed points of
pressure measurement, a system
architecture can be realised without
wiring each sensor to a central
control unit. In addition to the
SP30T, Inneon offers in the SP30
family TPMS sensors for 450/900
kPa pressure range.

XC2000 Family
Scalable, Highly Integrated
Automotive Microcontrollers
The XC2000 family offers a scalable
and highly integrated Flash-based
16-bit microcontroller platform,
based on the popular C166Sv2 core.
This family is primary designed
for automotive applications and
consists of three sub-families.
Each sub family addresses specic
target segments with their different
on-chip memory congurations
and peripheral sets. All XC2000
derivatives share a common
package pin-out with the industrial
XE166 family, allowing for exible
migration.
The XC2200 sub-family is optimised
for body and gateway applications.
It offers 448...768 Kbytes of
on-chip Flash and up to 82 Kbytes
of SRAM. A maximum CPU clock of
80 MHz can be applied. The XC2200
is soon to be expanded towards
1.2 Mbytes of Flash memory.
Furthermore a Memory Protection
Unit (MPU) helps you to protect
your IP.
The XC2300 sub-family is targeted
at safety applications like airbags
or electric power steering. Fast
reaction time and exibility is
needed in those applications.
Safety systems using the XC2300
most likely need to be certied
according to the new Security
Interface Layer SIL3 standard
(IEC 61508). This automotive safety
standard is at presently being
nalised and will come into effect
in Europe this year.
The XC2700 sub-family is tailored
for powertrain applications.
Available are derivatives with
768 Kbytes of Flash, optional

ISL29010/ISL29013
Light to Digital Output Sensors with
I
2
C Interface
The ISL29010 and ISL29013 are
integrated ambient light sensors
with I
2
C interface. They integrate
an internal signed 15-bit ADC
based on charge-balancing A/D
conversion techniques. This ADC
is capable of rejecting 50 Hz and
60 Hz icker caused by articial
light sources. The lux range select
feature allows the user to program
the lux range for optimised counts/lux.
The main advantage of light sensors
over standard photo diodes are
the digital output pins which make
it easy to change lux ranges and
to interface to a microcontroller.
The ISL29010, for example, has an
address selection pin (A0) and the
ISL29013 incorporates an interrupt
pin. Another key aspect is the ideal
spectral response of light sensors
as different light sources offer
different spectral characteristics
(see Figure 1). Ordinary PIN
photodiodes, either passive or
active, have a very broad spectral
response range including UV and
IR radiation. Ideally, you want to
choose a light sensor that only
sees visible light (380...770 nm) and
absorbs all unwanted IR radiation.
The ISL29010/13 devices accurately
measure only visible light and
attenuate all IR and UV rays (see
Figure 2).

ISL65426
6 A Dual Synchronous Regulator
The ISL65426 provides a highly
efcient power supply solution for
2 output voltages. It provides an
easy to use and exible solution
for FPGA, DSP and CPU power
supplies delivering 2 different
voltages for the core and the I/Os.
The part can provide a total of
6 A on the two outputs depending
on the power block conguration
shown in Table 1. Also the
output voltage can be congured
easily. With an input voltage of
3...5.5 V it offers 2 output voltage
conguration possibilities. You
can either use the predened xed
output voltages by setting the
output voltage conguration pins
(see Table 2), or select the output
voltages via an external resistor
divider.
Figure 1 shows a typical schematic
of 2 outputs congured as: 1.5 V at
4 A and 3.3 V with 2 A. The settings
of the ISETx and VxSETx pins
dene the output voltages and
currents. The ISL65426 integrates
2 current mode PWM controllers,
which are running at a xed
frequency of 1 MHz. Both PWMs
are synchronised 180 out-of-phase,
reducing the RMS input current
and ripple voltage. Independent
enable inputs are available for
synchronisation or sequencing
soft-start. The individual power-
good signals indicate when
the output voltage is within the
regulation window. Protection for
both synchronous buck regulator
channels is integrated on chip.
A 4 A version of the ISL65426 is
also available.

The ISSI IS66WV51216ALL/BLL
memories are high-speed
pseudostatic RAMs with 8 Mbits
storage capacity organised as
512 Kwords by 16 bits. These
pseudostatic RAMs provide a cost-
effective solution to a standard

providing an easy-to-use drop in
replacement. IS66WV51216ALL/BLL
products are fabricated in a highly
reliable CMOS process resulting in
high-performance and low-power
devices. Compared to standard
low-power SRAMs, the typical
standby current of these 8 Mbytes
PSRAMs is 75 A instead of 4 A
and the typical operating current is
15 mA instead of 25 mA. When CS1
is HIGH (deselected) or when CS2

LM3406/06HV
Constant Current Driver for
High-Power LEDs
Besides the already existing
devices LM3402/4 this new LM3406
will extend the current range up to
1.5 A, fullling the growing demand
for higher LED driving currents.
The LM3406 family includes two
different devices. The standard
LM3406 device allows an input
voltage of 42 V whereas the HV
device extends the input voltage up
to 75 V. Both types of devices start
with a minimum input voltage of
6 V. The most important feature of
a dedicated LED driver is the low
feedback reference voltage. As the
LM3406 needs only 200 mV (typ.)
a low value shunt resistor can
be used and the maximal power
loss is only 300 mW. Furthermore
the drive current should be
adjustable over a wide range. The
most common practice to adjust
the drive current is to drive the
enable input with a PWM signal.
This device uses the DIM input to
increase the switching frequency of
the driver current. While the signal
at the DIM pin is changing from
logic low to logic high the support
circuitry remains active for the time
needed to switch the LED array
back on. The LM3406 offers an
additional way to control the output
current called Two-Wire-Dimming.
In this mode the input voltage has
to be pulsed to achieve current
regulation and an additional input
diode is necessary.
The LM3406 is a buck regulator
using Constant On-Time (COT)
architecture with hysteretic mode
control. This eliminates the need
for small-signal control loop
compensation. The driver may be
shut-down into a low power state
reducing the current drawn from
the input down to 90 A. To protect
the regulator and the circuitry the
device offers different protection
features such as peak current
limitation, over-voltage protection,
over-current protection and thermal
shutdown.

LMH0302/0344/0346
Cable Driver/Equaliser/Reclocker
Extending the Reach of 3G-SDI Transmissions
High Denition TV (HDTV) is the
next stage in the evolution of TV
viewing, offering much better
picture and sound quality than
the standard denition television
(SDTV). HDTV equipment
needs to fulll the needs of the
increased data rates of up to
3 Gbps over a single-link cable.
Introducing the LMH0302/0344/0346
devices, National offers a complete
end-to-end solution for the rapidly
emerging 3 Gbps SDI market. The
combination of the brand new
high-end LMH0344 equaliser,
LMH0346 reclocker and LMH0302
cable driver devices enable users
to design a high quality 3G-SDI
signal chain. To maximise designer
exibility, each of Nationals
3G-SDI-products has a footprint-
compatible counterpart for HD/
SD and SD only applications. The
LMH0344 is designed to equalise
data transmitted via cable or any
other media with similar dispersive
loss characteristics. It supports a
wide range of incoming data rates
from 143 Mbps to 2.97 Gbps. After
being equalised, the next stage
in the 3G-SDI signal chain is the
reclocking circuit (LMH0346) which
automatically senses incoming data
rates and adjusts itself to re-time
the incoming data to suppress
accumulated jitter. Finally, the
3G-SDI cable driver (LMH0302) is
designed to drive 75 transmission
lines (like Belden 1694A, Belden
8281 or equivalent) at data rates up
to 2.97 Gbps.

LM5118
Wide Voltage Range Buck-Boost
Controller
Nationals LM5118 switching
regulator features all of the
functions necessary to implement
an efcient buck-boost regulator,
using a minimum of external
components. The buck-boost
topology maintains output voltage
regulation when the input voltage is
either less than or greater than the
output voltage, making the product
especially suitable for automotive
applications.
The LM5118 operates as a buck
regulator when the input voltage
is sufciently greater than the
regulated output voltage and
gradually transitions to the buck-
boost mode as the input voltage
approaches the output. This
dual-mode approach maintains
regulation over a wide range
of input voltages with optimal
conversion efciency in the buck
mode and a glitch-free output
during mode transitions. The
LM5118 includes drivers for the
high-side buck MOSFET and the
low-side boost MOSFET. The
emulated current-mode control
reduces noise sensitivity of the
pulse-width modulation circuit,
allowing reliable control of very
small duty cycles necessary in
high input-voltage applications.
Additional protection features
include current limit, thermal shut-
down and an enable input.
Emulated current-mode control
overcomes traditional current-
mode controls noise susceptibility
by emulating the buck switch
current signal, which is then used
for current-mode control. The
emulated buck switch current
signal is the sum of an emulation
ramp current and the sampled
diode current just before switching

UBA3070
Drives LED Strings up to 600 V
Although designed for the use
in Backlighting Units (BLUs), the
UBA3070 is very interesting for
industrial or consumer applications
where many LEDs need to be
controlled with one driver. The
UBA3070 is an integrated switch-
mode buck converter controlling
the current through LED strings.
The driver was designed for LCD
backlighting applications, therefore
it enables ideal performance for
series-connected LED strings. As
the UBA3070 drives an external
power device, it can be used for
all kinds of BLU designs from
high- to low-power LEDs, and
high- to low-voltage LED strings.
And by combining the UBA3070
with appropriate power devices,
you can minimise the number of
driver stages needed by optimising
the number of LEDs connected in
series. Each driver stage consists
of a buck converter operating in
boundary conduction mode. Its
peak level can be set through an
external sense resistor. As the zero-
level is xed, the converter acts as
a current source with an average
current through the LED of half the
peak value through the inductor.
The ripple current through the LEDs
can be chosen via the external
capacitor connected in parallel to
the LEDs.
Key Features
Switch-mode buck converter
capable of driving LED strings up
to 600 V
Direct PWM dimming
Fast transient response through
cycle-by-cycle current control
prevents LED current over- and
undershoots
Zero-current switching for
turn-on of the switch
Zero-voltage or valley switching
for turn-on of the switch
Over-current and over-
temperature protection, under-
voltage lockout and leading edge
blanking
Available in DIP8 and SO8
packages
Benets
Low system cost
Reduced component count
Power-efcient boundary
conduction mode of operation
no reverse recovery losses in
freewheel diode
Requires smaller, lower-valued
inductor
No LED binning on forward
voltage required
Allows use of a single, loosely
controlled input voltage for
multiple LED strings

TDA18291HN
Low Power DVB-T Tuner
The TDA18291 is an ultra low power
and compact silicon tuner solution,
perfect for digital TV reception on
portable appliances. It operates
in the VHFIII and UHF band
(174...230 MHz and 470...862 MHz)
and contains all functions needed
for a whole receiver chain from
RF input to baseband IQ outputs:
LNA, quadrature mixer, channel
lters and a complete RF PLL with
a fully integrated VCO. The PLL can
operate from a number of reference
frequencies, tting many platforms.
Power consumption has been
optimised and a dedicated on-off
pin has been added to allow for
fast switching. The tuner consumes
only 150 mW in continuous mode,
while a dedicated turn-on/off pin
allows further power reduction
for time sliced applications. It
supports serial programming and
can be interfaced to any standard
Zero-IF channel decoder ICs.
Gain is programmable by 0.5 dB
steps using two dedicated up
and down pins. Requiring fewer
than 55 components to build a
complete tuner solution, it reduces
the overall bill of material. Balun,
switches, and lters for multi-band
applications are included to reduce
the footprint of the application by
minimising the number of external
components. The tuner is available
in a HVQFN32 package (5 x 5 mm).

NCP1654
Power Factor Controller
The NCP1654 is a controller for
power factor correction stages
working in xed frequency and
continuous conduction mode. It is
housed in a compact SO-8 package
and incorporates all necessary
features to build compact and
rugged PFC stages using very few
external components.
The NCP1654 can operate in
follower boost mode, which means
that the output voltage varies
linearly with the AC line voltage.
This technique allows reducing
the gap between input and output,
thus helping to optimise the
boost efciency in medium power
applications.
The NCP1654 integrates a lot
of safety protection functions.
The brownout function detects a
low AC voltage and disables the
PFC stages. With the true power
limiting function, the circuit resets
immediately in case of excessive
power transfer. An internal thermal
circuitry disables the gate drive
circuit whenever the junction
temperature is exceeding 150 C
and resumes the operation once the
temperature drops below 120 C.
The 1.5 A output totem pole
driver is able to drive MOSFETs
with high total gate charge. The
supply current of the NCP1654
device is particularly reduced
during start-up phase and in
shut-down mode, this low power
consumption helps meeting more
stringent stand-by low power
specications.
A useful Excel spreadsheet,
available on the web, helps the
designer to compute the main
external components of the
NCP1654. Finally the pin-to-pin
compatibility of the NCP1654 with
existing industry standard ICs gives
a good reason to upgrade existing
designs, gaining in ruggedness and
reliability.

NCP312x
Integrated Dual Buck Regulators
The NCP312x is a family of dual non
synchronous PWM voltage mode
buck regulators, with an input
voltage range from 4.5... 13.2 V.
The family offers dual 2 A and
dual 3 A versions with different
switching frequency options.
Each channel inside the device is
identical integrating a 2/3 A FET,
compensation, feedback, soft
start, enable and power good. The
channels share the input voltage
reference and the protection
circuit. The switching frequency
is set via an external resistor.
The integrated PWM controllers
run 180 out of phase to reduce
EMI noise and input capacitor
values. The NCP3210 provides a
dual 2 A and the NCP3121 a dual
3 A switching regulator with an
adjustable 200...750 kHz switching
frequency. The NCP3122 (dual 2 A)
and the NCP3123 (dual 3 A) offer a
programmable switching frequency
ranging from 200 kHz to 2 MHz
reducing the external component
size. Table 1 lists the features and
members of the NCP312x family.
The output voltages are set via
external resistor dividers.
The parts offer ratiometric-
sequencing, sequential-sequencing,
and tracking sections to manage
output voltage behavior during
start-up and power-down.

NCV7703
Triple Half-Bridge Driver
with SPI Control
Flexible solutions for scalable low
power motion control applications
in size critical systems are
achieved by employing serial
standard interfaces in order to
control the power stage via low
pin count microcontrollers. With
the NCV7703, ON Semiconductor
provides three individually
controlled half bridges in one
package, controlled by a 16-bit
Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) that
allows daisy chaining with other
devices. Therefore simple control
algorithms for several power stages
with one tiny microcontroller can
be achieved. Even more complex
control schemes such as torque or
speed control are possible with a
suitable microcontroller.
The exibility to switch the three
half bridges individually enables
the control of both brushed DC
motors in H-bridge conguration
and BLDC motors in 3-phase-
bridge conguration. Moreover,
the control of two brushed DC
motors with one device in cascaded
applications is also possible.
The NCV7703 comprises extensive
protection features including
Over-voltage and under-voltage
lockout
Over-current threshold detection
with several shutdown options
3 A current limit with auto
shutdown
Over temperature warning and
protection levels
While the SPI Serial In frame (SI) is
used to control the device, the fault
information itself is sequentially
clocked out with the Serial Out
frame (SO). The SPI SI is not only
controlling the output, it also
controls the reaction upon fault
conditions.
AEC-Q100 qualication makes this
device appropriate for low power
control circuits such as ap or fan
control in automotive applications.

AMIS305xx
Stepper Motor Drivers/Controllers
The AMIS305xx is a family of
micro-stepping stepper motor
drivers for bipolar stepper motors.
The ICs can be interfaced via I/O
pins or an SPI bus to an external
microcontroller.
The AMIS30522 contains a current
translation table and takes the
next micro-step on every rising (or
falling) edge of the signal on the
NXT input pin. The DIR register or
input pin denes the direction of
rotation. The IC provides a speed
and load angle output signal. This,
in turn allows the external C to
run stall detection algorithms
and control loops based on load
angle and to adjust torque and
speed accordingly. AMIS30522
uses a proprietary PWM algorithm
for reliable current control.
Additionally, the AMIS30522 has
an on-chip voltage regulator,
reset output and watchdog reset
to accommodate an external
microcontroller.
The AMIS30522 is implemented in
AMIS I2T100 technology, combining

LE ATB S2W
High Power LED in SMT Package
Osram is introducing a set of new
OSTAR projection devices with
4 LED chips in Surface Mount
Technology (SMT) which are now
even more compact and efcient
than before. LE ATB S2W is a
MultiLED with 4 chips (amber,
2 x true green, blue) in SMT
package and will be followed by
monochrome versions in several
colors (amber, true green, blue,
ultra white). The target market
for OSTAR SMT will be the pico
projector market. Pico projectors
require a reliable, efcient and
bright light source which should be
as small as possible to optimise the
projection lens system tting into
cell phones. While the standard
Osram OSTAR devices are mounted
on a star package the new OSTAR
SMT devices can be soldered
directly on the target board
reaching a much better thermal
performance. With a typical driving
current of 700 mA the LED will
reach a luminous ux of 55 lm for
amber, 200 lm for the dual true
green and 24 lm for the blue chip.

LUW W5AM
Golden Dragon Plus with Improved
Brightness
Since some years Osram Golden
Dragon LEDs are the workhorse in
many applications where moderate
brightness is required. Now the
star shines even brighter: The new
Golden Dragon Plus LUW W5AM is
the newest member of the Golden
Dragon family. Due to the latest
chip technology and a silicone lens
for increased extraction efciency
it offers improved brightness
with a maximal luminous ux of
110 lm and therefore works with an
efciency greater than 100 lm per
watt when supplied with 350 mA.
In contrast to the standard Golden
Dragon the silicone incapsulant is
formed into a lens allowing most
of the generated light to directly
leave the LED. This silicone dome
delivers a mainly lambertian optical
characteristic but with stronger
intensity at the sides. This means
that approximately 60% of the
emitted ux is directed towards
angles larger than 45.
Besides delivering the maximum
possible light from the smallest of
sources, this high-performance LED
has an exceptionally long lifetime,
giving designers and developers
the means to take illumination
into completely new dimensions.
The Golden Dragon Plus is also
available in the full white color
spectrum (ultra white with 6500 K,
cool white with 5600 K and warm
white with 3000 K) and is solder
pad compatible with the Dragon
family. Versions with saturated
colors (red, yellow, green, blue) will
be available soon.

SFH7740/SFH7741
Optical Proximity Sensor
The SFH7740/SFH7741 are optical
proximity sensors. The two models
are pin to pin compatible; the
main differences are the working
distance and therefore the targeted
applications. Objects are detected
by light reection. The emitter and
the receiver are on the same die.
Optical proximity sensors can save
energy in mobile applications. The
SFH7740 switch measures just a
few millimeters (3.7 x 3.7 x 1.0) and
reacts to tiny distances between
0.5 mm and 4 mm. The sensor
is insensitive to Electromagnetic
Interference (EMI) and does
not produce any EMI itself. It is
therefore an ideal alternative to
the Hall sensors currently used
to measure proximity. The tiny
SFH7741 optical proximity switch
reacts at distances up to 30 mm
and is suitable for a wide range
of applications. These sensors
add a new range of products to
OSRAMs existing product portfolio
of orientation and ambient light
sensors.

1 Gbyte DDR3 SDRAM
The Qimonda DDR3 SDRAM
devices offer data transfer rates
of up to 1,600 Mbps. This doubles
the maximum data transfer
rates of todays DDR2 memories
and signicantly boosts the
performance of future embedded
systems. Furthermore, the supply
voltage of the memory is reduced
from 1.8 V for DDR2 to just 1.5 V
for DDR3, extending battery life
time. This voltage reduction is
an important prerequisite for
limiting power consumption and
heat generation if bandwidth
is increased. DDR3 SDRAM
technology has the ability to
transfer data at a much higher
rate than previously possible.
With these improved data rates,
designers have the option to
improve the signal integrity of the
data bus, while still maintaining
performance. The dynamic on-die
termination is a new feature
introduced with DDR3 and provides
systems with increased exibility
to optimise termination values for
different loading conditions.

S3C4RU1X00-YG81
32-Bit Microcontroller
for Mobile RFID Reader
The S3C4RU1 is Samsungs
new single-chip radio frequency
identication (RFID) reader for
mobile devices. It is fabricated
using a 0.18 m CMOS process.
The S3C4RU1 is built around a
16/32-bit ARM7TDMI CPU core, a
cost-effective, high performance
microcontroller for Mobile RFID
reader applications. This new
embedded RFID reader chip
operates in the ultra high-frequency
(UHF) band allowing for long
operating ranges and fast data
rates. The data rate is in the range
of 250 kbps. Besides the processor
and memory, the chip integrates an
RF analog front end and a base-
band modem, all combined in a tiny
6.5 x 6.5 mm package.
The RFID readers 900 MHz RF
interface is compliant with the EPC
(Electronic Product Code) global
Class 1 GEN2 and ISO 18000-6C
specications. According to those
standards, the S3C4RU1 uses an
Amplitude Shift Keying modulation
scheme (DSB-ASK or PR-ASK) for
the forward link (reader to tag)
and the baseband FM0 or Miller
Modulated Subcarrier (MMS)
standard for the reverse link
(tag to reader).
As the S3C4RU1 is mainly aimed
at mobile applications, a very
important element for achieving
low power consumption is the
integrated low-power frequency
synthesiser. By having a
fractional-N type of PLL on chip,
this allows low-power operation
while maintaining a high frequency
resolution.
The rmware is masked in ROM
which is compliant with EPC global
Class1 GEN2 and the mobile RFID
reader control protocol.

SSP Flash File System
TrueFFS Block Driver and
FATLite File System
The SSP le system signicantly
reduces software development
time, enabling faster time to market
by simplifying ash memory
integration.
The SSP le system offers
exibility for embedded
applications. For applications using
an operating system, Spansion
provides customised OS binding
and the TrueFFS block driver as part
of the SSP le system solution. This
software solution enables rapid
system integration with no changes
required to the existing application
layer. For those customers not
using an operating system or a
Flash le system, the TrueFFS
block driver and FATLite solution
can enable a complete le system
abstraction for integrated systems.
The SSP le system is capable of
supporting several different NOR
interface board layouts. Layouts
can be composed of identical Flash
devices that are cascaded together
to create a longer Flash address
space or that are interleaved to
create a wider data path. Various
cascade/interleave combinations
can be used to form one continuous
address space, managed by the
SSP solution as one TrueFFS
socket.
Enhanced System Perfomance
The TrueFFS block driver
automatically manages the
following:
Automatically applies program/
erase cycles evenly across the
entire sector address space,
delivering the maximum rated
life from Spansion MirrorBit
memory products.
Enables successful mount on
system reboot after unscheduled
battery removal, hot swap or
user-controlled power down.
Support for a Variety of System
Operating Models
The SSP le system solution is
designed to support a wide variety
of system operating models. The
TrueFFS block driver supports two
partitions in the Flash device: one
for data storage and one for code
execution. The physical data
storage partition provided by the
TrueFFS block driver can be further
subdivided into multiple logical
Flash drives by the le system.
This partition supports, together
with SSPs support for software,
simultaneous read/write and
enables several modes of system
operations.

LIS302DL
MEMS 3-Axis Motion Sensor
The LIS302DL device is a low-
power, digital output, 3-axis linear
accelerometer packaged in an
ultra-compact LGA package.
It consists of a sensing element
and an I
2
C interface.
The sensing element is manu-
factured as a surface micro-
machined accelerometer. This is
a proprietary process technology
consisting of suspended silicon
structures which are attached to
the substrate at so called anchor
points and are free to move
in the direction of the sensed
acceleration. When an acceleration
is applied to the sensor, the proof
mass is displaced from its nominal
position, causing an imbalance
in the capacitive half-bridge. This
imbalance is measured using
charge integration in response
to a voltage pulse applied to the
sense capacitor. At steady state, the
nominal values of the capacitors
are just a few pF. When an
acceleration occurs, the capacitive
load is in the fF range.
The acceleration data can be
accessed through the integrated

TDE1708DFT
Intelligent Power Switch
The TDE1708 is an integrated
power switch with up to 48 V
supply capability. As this part was
designed for factory automation, it
is almost indestructible. There are
two output congurations possible:
high- and low side mode.
The part can drive resistive
or inductive loads. A signal is
internally generated to block
the input signal preventing
activation of the output switch as
long as an abnormal condition is
detected. The power-on transition
as well as the on-chip over
temperature detection and the
output over current ag resulting
in the generation of an abnormal
condition signal. A minimum delay
of 25 s is added to the trailing
edge of such signal to ensure that a
stable, normal situation is present
when the signal disappears.

VIPer17
Off-Line High Voltage Converters
The VIPer17 off-line converter is
a member of STMicroelectronics
versatile VIPer family. Features
such as an off-line converter block
with 800 V rugged power section,
hysteretic thermal protection
and soft start is another good
example of how semiconductor
manufacturers strive to make off-
line power converter design as easy
as possible. Two different operating
frequencies and PWM jittering
enable a low EMI design. Burst
mode operation for low stand-by
power consumption enables energy
efcient converter designs. It is
suitable for single input voltage

TPS6120x Series
From 0.3 V V
IN
Boost Converter
for Solar Cell Applications
Texas Instruments increases the
portfolio in power supply devices
with the TPS6120x family. In this
case the devices are oriented
to applications with low input
voltages. The devices provide
output currents up to 600 mA at 5 V
output voltage with input
voltages of only 3 V. The boost
converter is based on a xed
frequency PWM controller using
synchronous rectication to obtain
maximum efciency (90%). At low
load currents, the converter enters
power save mode to maintain high
efciency over a wide load current
range. It is, however possible
to disable this mode forcing
the converter to work at a xed
frequency. These features make the
devices a perfect t for solar cell
and battery powered applications.
Example Application:
Li cell charger with a solar cell
A solar cell charger for a Li cell,
where the battery is charged
directly from a single solar
cell, can be designed with a
few external components.
The charge current is approximately
11 mA when using a solar cell
of 25 cm
2
in an indoor daylight
environment. The design can
charge a battery of 600 mA in
approximately 60 hours, this
could be an interesting solution
for remote applications without a
periodic maintenance.

DAC568x
High Speed 16-Bit DACs
The DAC568x family features
straight or interpolating 16-bit
DACs, single or dual channels.
Packaged in a 9 x 9 mm QFN
package, this family saves
signicant space over the previous
generation. These devices offer
high performance integrated
solutions, providing several
conguration options to support
different transmit architectures,
such as direct up-conversion,
complex input/real IF output
radio systems for wireless air
interfaces such as WCDMA and
WiMAX. Used in communications
applications, oversampling and
interpolating capabilities relaxes
the requirements on the output
lter and increases the SNR.
The dual channel DAC5682Z can
achieve full rate 1 Gsps input data
conversion for one DAC channel
or half data rate interpolating and
conversion on each DAC channel
in two channel mode. A good
combination to improve system
level performance is the ultra-low
jitter CDCE72010 clock synthesizer,
which provides best-in-class
additive jitter performance at less
than 50 fs.

TB62237BFG
Stepper/Brushed-DC Motor Driver
The TB62237BFG is a new multi-
motor driver IC from Toshiba
with valuable integrated features
allowing engineers to establish
a common hardware solution to
driving multiple stepper motors
or brushed DC motors with input
voltages up to 40 V.
The TB62237BFG uses high-voltage
IC technology combining four
H-bridge outputs with motor-
control logic, as well as a built-in
timer and protection functions.
The DMOS motor driver outputs
achieve a low on-resistance of just
0.6 for low-loss operation.
The IC is capable of driving
any combination of stepper
and brushed DC motors up to a
maximum of four axes. Each of
the H-bridges can be programmed
to accommodate either a stepper
conguration with 4-bit micro
stepping or a DC brushed one.
Since parallel operation of two
H-bridges is also supported the
designer has the choice to drive
fewer motor axes but with higher
current.
Additional on-chip features include
three DC/DC converters each
capable of supplying up to 1.2 A to
surrounding circuitry.
The TB62237BFG implements
protection functions to prevent
damage to the motor as well as the
IC itself without requiring external
components. These protection
functions include over-current and
over-voltage protection for internal
DC-DC converters, as well as motor
over-current protection and IC over-
temperature protection.
Key Features

TB6558FLG
Dual Channel Full-Bridge Driver for
DC Motors
The TB6558FLG is a single chip
dual bridge driver for DC motor
control of smaller motors. The
device is based on LDMOS output
transistors with low R
ON
(1.5 ).
It is possible to operate the motor
in four different modes: forward
and reverse rotation control, short
brake and stop by controlling
the inputs IN1 and IN2; there
are control pins for each block.
Separate reference pins V
REF
A
and V
REF
B for each H-bridge block
allows the constant current values
to be individually programmed. The
control of dead band time for the
H-bridges is provided on chip.
The TB6558FLG is capable of
constant current control of the
PWM chopper drive giving faster
feedback and reducing the motor
noise. It can be put into standby
mode using less than 1 s, in
normal operating mode the
controller will use 1.5 mA.
The controller is also equipped
with an on-chip thermal shutdown
function which shuts down the
driver at a temperature of 170 C.
Normal operating temperature is
-20+85 C.

VO1263
Dual Photovoltaic Optocoupler for
Transformerless PSUs and MOSFET Drive
For very low power devices supplied
from the 230 V mains, it is often
difcult to justify the use of a
transformer to provide isolation.
Mains transformers are bulky and
heavy and switching supplies also
need a relatively large transformer to
provide sufcient creepage distance.
An alternative solution is to use
photovoltaic optocouplers. The
Vishay VO1263 offers the highest
output voltage and current
combination in the industry.
The outputs may be paralleled
for higher current and the input
LEDs connected serially for better
efciency. The schematic shows
an isolated supply capable of
providing 5 V at 0.2 mA. The current
to the LEDs is limited using a series
capacitor; on the secondary side an
ultra-low-power voltage regulator
stabilises the output voltage.
Another useful application for
photovoltaic couplers is isolated
static drive of high-side N-channel
MOSFETs in a power H-bridge. For
DC motor control, it is possible to
keep one of the upper MOSFETs
constantly turned on while the
PWM is controlling the opposite
lower MOSFET. The upper
MOSFETs would only need to be
turned on or off when changing
motor direction. As switching
speed is non critical, the limited
drive current of the VO1263 is
not an issue. A comprehensive
application note explaining
switching speed optimisation
for the VO1263 is available from
Vishay. A further application for the
VO1263 is MOSFET gate driving in
custom solid-state relays.
