Purification of the Creed
from the Filth of Blasphemy

By:
The Imaam, the Muhaddith,
the Well-Known Salafee Mujtahid of Yemen:
Muhammad bin Ismaa’eel Al-Yamanee As-San’aanee
1099-1182

Translated by:
Aboo Imraan al-Mekseekee

In the name of Allaah, The Beneficent, The Merciful and with Him all aide
is sought.

Introduction

All praise is due to Allaah the One who does not accept the Unity of His
Lordship from amongst His servants unless the Unity of Worship is
singled out strictly to Him alone. They do not take any associate, nor call
anyone along with Him, nor trust in anyone except Him, nor do they seek
refuge in any situation except to Him, nor do they call onto Him except
with the Best of His names, nor do they seek a means of attainment
except with Him in intercession:

“Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His

permission?”
Soorah Al-Baqarah: 255

And I bear witness that nothing is worthy of worship except Allaah as a

Lord to be worshipped and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant
and His Messenger the One who ordered him to say:

“Say: I possess no power over benefit or hurt to myself except as

Allaah wills.”
Soorah al-A’araaf: 188

And sufficient is Allaah as a witness.

May the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, upon his family and
those who followed him in perfection from falling into imperfections and
purified the hearts from the belief of every disgracing thing that corrupts
it (the heart).

To Proceed: So this is (Tatheer-ul-‘Itiqaadi ‘an Idraan-il-Ilhaadi) “The

Purification of the Creed from the Filth of Blasphemy”. It became
necessary to author it and arrange its contents to the one who will read
and benefit from it. (And that is) from taking the servants as partners in
worship (from other than Allah) that is found in all of the major cities
and villages in all of the lands of Yemen, Syria, Egypt, Najd, Tihaamah,
and the other lands of Islaam.

It is the belief in the graves (bringing about harm or benefit), (and the
other belief) that people allege knowledge of the unseen or divine
revelations. This type of person is from the people of wickedness who

does not know the Sunnah nor the Book (of Allaah), nor does he fear the
resurrection nor the reckoning.

So it is necessary that I refute what Allaah has obligated to be refuted,

not to be like those who conceal what Allah has obligated outright.

So you should know: That here in this treatise are (five) principles and
they are from the foundations of the religion of the most important
aspects of knowledge that the muwahheedoon should know.

The First Principle: Everything contained in the Qur’aan is the truth

It is well known from the duty of the religion that everything that is
contained in the Qur’aan is truth not falsehood, it is honesty containing
no fabrication, it is guidance containing no misguidance, it is knowledge
not containing ignorance, in it is certainty containing no doubt. This
principle is a principle that no one’s Islaam nor Imaan is complete until
he or she believes in it and this is agreed upon (by all of the People of
knowledge) with no dispute concerning it.

The Second Principle: The Messengers were sent to call to the

Tawheed of Allaah by way of Tawheed of Ibaadah (Worship directed
only to Allaah)

The Messengers of Allaah and His Prophets-from the First to the Last of
them-were all sent to call the servants to the Oneness of Allaah by way of
Tawheed of ‘Ibadaah (Worship directed only to Allaah). So the first thing
that each Prophet made reach his people’s hearing was His statement:

“O People worship Allaah there is no other god to worship other

than Him.”
Soorah Al-A’raaf: ayaats 59, 65, 73, 75

3

www.SalafyInk.com

“That you all do not worship except for Allaah”

Soorah Hood: 26

“That you all worship Allaah and fear Him and obey Him”
Soorah Nooh: 3

And this is the statement that encompasses the phrase:

((There is nothing that has more right to be worshipped except

Allaah.))

So the Messengers called their people to the statement of this phrase, to

believe in its meaning, not something that one should say solely with the
tongue.

And it (the statement there is nothing that has more right to be

worshipped except Allaah) is defined as singling out Allaah in divinity
and worship. It negates what is worshipped from other than Him and He
is free from it (their worshipping other than Him Most High). And this
principle is free from doubt according to that which encompasses it,
there is no doubt concerning it. There is no one whose faith is complete
until one learns and actualizes it.

The Third Principle: The Sections of Tawheed (Monotheism)

Tawheed consists of two portions:

4
Sections from: Purification of the Creed from the Filth of Blasphemy
www.SalafyInk.com

The first portion is the Oneness of Allaah’s Lordship (Tawheed ar-

Rububeeyah), His power of creating, His provisioning (for the creation)
and other similar traits. It is defined, as meaning that Allaah is alone He
is the Creator of the world who is Lord over all of the creation, and their
Provider. And this was not rejected by the Mushreekoon (Polytheists) as
they did not place any partners with Allaah in this, rather they affirmed
it as will follow in the fourth principle.

The second portion is the Oneness of worship (for Allaah alone known as
Tawheed al-Ibadaah). It is defined as singling out Allaah alone in all
types of worship. And this is where they (the polytheists) placed partners
with Allaah. The word, “Partner” indicates an affirmation of association
with Allaah.

So the Messengers, peace be upon them all, were sent to establish the
first (Tawheed ar-Rububeeyah) and to call the polytheists to the second
(Tawheed al-Ibadaah), like their statement in the address (of Allaah) to
the polytheists:

“Is there any doubt that Allaah is the Originator of the Heavens and
the Earth whom you call on to forgive you of your sins…”
Soorah Ibraaheem: 10

and:

“Is there another creator other than Allah who provides for you from
the heaven and the earth there is nothing worthy of worship except
for Him.”
Soorah Faatir: 3

5
Sections from: Purification of the Creed from the Filth of Blasphemy
www.SalafyInk.com

And He forbade them from the idoltary of worship (Shirk al-Ibadaah) with
this He the Most High said:

“And we sent to every nation a messenger commanding that all of

you worship Allaah and that you flee from the Taaghoot.”
Soorah An-Nahl: 36

Meaning that they said to their people: Worship only Allaah. So what is
derived of benefit from His statement: {…Every nation} is that all of the
nations were sent messengers to request from it’s people with only one
thing and that was the Oneness of Worship. (They were not sent) to
define that Allaah was the Creator of the Universe and that He was the
Lord of the Heavens and the Earth. They had already affirmed this as the
verses (of Allaah’s Book) concerning it was addressed in the form of the
Interrogative of Affirmation like (His statement):

“Who is the one who has created besides Allaah?”

Soorah Faatir: 3

“Is the One who creates like the one who cannot?”
Soorah An-Nahl: 17

“Is there any doubt as to Allaah being the Originator of the Heavens
and the Earth?”
Soorah Ibraaheem: 10

“Is there any other that are taken as a protector like the Originator

6

of the Heavens and the Earth?”

Soorah al-A’naam: 14

“This is the creation of Allaah so show me what others have created

besides Him?”
Soorah Luqmaan: 11

“Show me what they have created from the Earth? Or do they have
a partner in the Sky?”
Soorah al-Ahqaaf: 4

The Interrogative and Affirmation is exclusive for them because they

affirmed this (the Tawheed of Rububeeyah).

And with that, you now know that the Mushreekoon did not take the
Idols or Statues (as a Lord) nor did they worship them, nor did they take
the Messiah and his mother, or the angels as partners with Allaah, Most
High for the sake of associating them as creators of the heavens and the
earth or as creators of themselves. Rather they called on them only to
seek nearness to Allaah as they stated and they affirmed belief in Allaah
at the same time they disbelieved and they sought intercession with
Allaah.

And Allah Most High says:

“And they worship other than Allah what will not harm them nor
benefit them. And they say they intercede for us with Allah. Say; Do
you inform Allah of what is in the heavens and the earth? Glorified
and Exalted is He above all that they associate as partners!”
Soorah Yoonas: 18

7
Sections from: Purification of the Creed from the Filth of Blasphemy
www.SalafyInk.com

So Allah placed the taking of them as intercessors as Shirk, and He

cleared himself from it (Shirk), because He does not allow anyone to
intercede except with His permission. So how do they establish
intercessors for themselves when Allah has not allowed for them
intercession, nor are they from amongst it, nor do they suffice for them
from Allah anything?

The Fourth Principle: The Mushrikoon affirmed that Allaah created

them

Verily the Mushrikoon, those whom Allah sent the messengers to,
affirmed that Allah created them:

“And if you asked them who created them they will say Allah.”
Soorah az-Zukhruf: 87

And that He was the one who created the heavens and the earth:

“And if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth they
will say He created them, The Mighty, The All Knowing.”
Soorah az-Zukhruf: 9

8
Sections from: Purification of the Creed from the Filth of Blasphemy
www.SalafyInk.com

And He is the Provider the One who brings out life from death and death
from life. He arranges the issue from the sky to the earth and He is the
One to whom hearing, vision, and the hearts belong to.

“Say who provides you all from the heaven and the earth? Who owns
the hearing and sight? Who brings out the living from the dead and
the dead from the living? Who disposes the affair? They will say;
Allah. So Say; Will you then not fear Him?”
Soorah Yoonas: 31

“Say; to whom does the earth and everything in it belong if you

know? They will say to Allah! Say; Will you not then remember?
Say; Who is Lord of the seven heavens and the magnificent throne?
They will say Allah! Say; Will you not fear Him? Say; In whose hand
is the sovereignty of everything and He protects it, while there is no
one else who can protect if you but knew? They will say: To Allah!
Say; How then are you deceived?”
Soorah al-Mu’minoon: 84-89

And this is Firauoon with his excessiveness in his disbelief, and his
allegations were the wickedest of allegations, his statement being an
abominable word. He said of Allah what was of His right (alone) in the
narration concerning Musaa (peace be upon him):

“You know that these signs have been sent down by none but the
Lord of the heavens and the earth with clear evidences.”
Soorah al-Israa’: 102

9
Sections from: Purification of the Creed from the Filth of Blasphemy
www.SalafyInk.com

And Iblees said:

“Verily I fear Allah, Lord of the Alaameen.”

Soorah al-Hashr: 16

And he said:

“O’ my Lord, because you mislead me…..”

Soorah al-Hijr: 39

And he said:

“My Lord give me then respite!”

Soorah Saad: 79

And every mushrik affirmed that Allah created him, and He created the
heavens and the earth, He is their Lord the Lord of them both, He
provides for them, and it is with this that the messengers debated with
them in their statement:

10
Sections from: Purification of the Creed from the Filth of Blasphemy
www.SalafyInk.com

“Is the One Who creates like the one who cannot create?”
Soorah an-Nahl: 17

And their statement:

“Those who you call on other than Allah will never be able to create
so much as a fly even if they all gathered to do it.”
Soorah al-Hajj: 73

The Mushreekoon affirmed this and they did not reject it.

The Fifth Principle: The foundation of ‘Ibaadah (Worship only for

Allaah) is Tawheed (Oneness) of Allaah

Verily ‘Ibaadah is the utmost category of obedience and self-abasement.

It is not used except in submission to Allah because He is the Protector
of Great Blessings, and likewise He is the most worthy of the ultimate
objective in obedience towards as is mentioned in “Al-Kashaaf”.

Then the head of worship and its foundation is that Tawheed is only for
Allah, that which benefits its statement, the one all the messengers
called to, and it is the statement:

((There is nothing that has more right to be worshipped except

Allaah.))

And what is meant here is belief of the meaning, and action that is
carried out, not just a statement made by the tongue.

It’s meaning is: To single out Allah in worship and divinity, negating and

11

www.SalafyInk.com

disavowing every thing that is worshipped besides Him.

The Disbelievers (During the time of the Prophet may the peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him) knew this meaning because their tongue
was the original Arabic language. They said:

“Has he made gods into One God, verily this is a strange thing!”
Soorah Saad: 5
