Data sufficiency
PQRS are any four consecutive years
from 1990 to 1999. Is P a leap year?
1. P & Q do not have the same number
of days
2. P & S have the same number of
days.

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer:
• From the first line it is clear that one of P
or Q is a leap year. Which is it, we don’t
know.
• When we read the second statement, it
becomes clear that P is a normal year.
Thus Q is a leap year. The answer can be
derived from both the statements
together.

Is Y an integer?
1. X- Y is an even integer
2. X + Y is an even integer.

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer:
• From any of these statements we cannot draw the
answer. But when we combine the statements, we
are able to get the answer. Thus using both the
statement, we can conclude the answer.
• Suppose, we take two numbers 3.5 &1.5, we can
get the answer from 1st statement, but we cant
get it validated from 2nd statement. If we take
two integers, let us say 5 & 3 or 4&2, we get both
the statements satisfied. Thus answers can be
obtained only on using both the statements.

X = 2, Y (a positive integer).

Is X^66 > Y^22?

1. Y is an even number
2. Y is less than 8.

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer:
• 2^66 = 2^(3*22) = 2^3(22) = 8^22.
• It is already given that Y is a positive
integer.
• Thus answer can be drawn from the
2nd statement alone.

P is reciprocal of Q. What
is the value of (P+Q)^2?
1. P^2Q^2 = 1
2. P^2 = 8

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer:
• The answer can be drawn from the 2nd statement
alone.
• First statement is already mentioned in the
question itself and therefore it is not necessary.
• From second statement, P = 2.828
• Q = 1 / 2.828
• Adding these, we get: 3.181. When we square it,
we get: 10.125

www.afterschoool.tk
Is X > 1?
1. X > 1/X
2. X^3 is a positive number

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer:
• Answer can be drawn from 1st statement alone.
• In the case of first statement : if we take the
value of X 1 , then condition from 1st statement is
not fulfilled. The condition is fulfilled only if we
have X >1.
• In case of second statement, if we take value of
X as 1, we get the condition fulfilled, yet the
answer is not available.
• Answer – 1st statement alone.

Among 4 frinds A,B,C,D,
who is tallest?
1. B is taller than A, but shorter than
D.
2. C is shorter than B.

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer:
• Answer can be drawn by using both
the statements together.

www.afterschoool.tk
Is A > 100?
1. A can be written as a product of
two primes.
2. A is divisible by 12.

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer
• Answer cannot be drawn from both
the statements together.

What is the area of
rhombus?
1. The length of each side is 5 m.
2. The two diagonals are of 8 & 6 m.
respectively.

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer:
• The answer can be drawn from
second statement alone.

www.afterschoool.tk
Is A > B?
1. a-3b = 6
2. 12b-4a+56 = 0

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer:
• Answer can be drawn from the first
statement.
• 12b-4a + 56 = 0
• 3b-a+14 = 0
• 3b = a-14
• Thus answer can be drawn from any
of these two statement (alone).

Is line AB parallel to line
CD?
1. AB is 2x+4Y +6 =0
2. CD is 3X +6Y -7 = 0

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer:
• Both the statements are necessary.
• Both the equations are same,
constants are different, thus two
equations are parallel. Ans.

How is D related to A?
1. B is sibling of A
2. B is D’s child

www.afterschoool.tk
Answer:
• D can be father or mother – we are
not sure.
• Thus answer cannot be drawn with
these two statements.
