Seat Belt Tension Sensors Capacitance

Capacitance is formed from two conductors separated by a nonconductor. %is tecnology works by canging te spacing
between te conductors, te area of te conductors or altering te properties of te non-conductor. Capacitance sensors
require sensing electronics to operate. Some also require drive electronics.

all Sensor
ased on te all effect, utilizing a tin seet of semiconductor material (called a all plate) wit a fixed current passing
troug it. Wen te all plate is subjected to a magnetic field, a voltage is generated perpendicular to te direction of
current flow due to te force exerted on carged particles in motion subjected to a magnetic field. %e all plate outputs a
voltage proportional to te strengt of te magnetic field. all sensors require amplification and signal conditioning of te
all plate signal, wic is usually contained inside an integrated circuit package wic forms te all effect sensor.

agneto-Resistive (R)
A material tat canges resistance 2-3% in te presence of a magnetic field. %ypically composed of a nickel-iron tin film
deposited on a silicon wafer and patterned as a resistive strip. %e output of a magneto-resistive sensor requires signal
processing. Giant agneto-Resistive (GR) materials cange resistance on te order of 10%-20%. %ypically composed of
more complex materials, suc as a series of e/Ag/Coxe1-x sandwices, wit te possible addition of Niobium, Silicon,
%antalum and oter elements.

Phototransistor
A design similar to a potodiode and consisting of multiple junctions acting as a transistor, pototransistor sensors are
capable of amplification. Ligt falling on te base region generates proportional amplification of te current passing
troug te device. 10x - 1000x more sensitive tan a potodiode.
