Embark on a magical adventure back to nature in safe, scenic, uncommercialised and enchanting Langkawi. Surrounded by a hundred or so small islands, this cruising area offers an outstanding natural landscape. The islands busy main town of Kuah is home to Sunsails base at the exclusive Royal Langkawi Yacht Club. In the Yacht Club outdoor area you will find Charlies Place. Built out over the water, it has a bar in the middle of the restaurant and is a great place to spend the afternoon relaxing and soaking up the sunset. For a spot of souvenir shopping, the Samudra duty-free centre is within easy walking distance. Throughout the cruising area there are many fabulous resorts, beautiful beaches and bays, with Tanjung Rhu being one of the most spectacular. Situated on the northern cape it is ideal for a relaxing afternoon on the sand and said to be the best beach on the island. For a stunning sailors hideaway, sail the river between two towering pillars to The Hole in the Wall. This eight to ten metre channel running between Langkawi and Pulo Langgun is a breathtaking sight not to be missed. Less than ten miles north of Langkawi, cross the border to the islands of Thailand. Koh Tarutao and the Butang group are world famous scuba diving destinations.

The winds vary all year round from 5 to 20 knots. The seas will generally be flatter from November to April with the NE monsoon blowing off the land. May through October, the southwest winds pick up, though sailing is still sheltered in most of the cruising area. The area is tidal with a range of approximately 2 to 3 metres.

Explore ashore before you set sail and wander down the streets of the bustling night market in Phuket City. Sailing north you enter the protected, stunning cruising area of Phang Nga Bay where a striking gallery of giant limestone rocks rise out of emerald waters. Anchor between Koh Hong and Koh Yai and take a longtail boat to Koh Phing Kan, the world famous James Bond Island. The unspoilt area of Krabi has some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the region. Explore the town via longtail boat from Phra Nang or take advantage of one of the many stunning locations available around the Koh Dam Group for an overnight stop. Koh Dam Khwan (known as chicken island because of its shape) has a beautiful sandy spit beach that is only revealed at mid tide. This is a lovely spot to anchor for a few secluded hours. On Phi Phi Le visit Maya Bay, a scenic sandy lagoon surrounded by limestone cliffs, excellent for snorkelling and swimming and made famous in the movie The Beach. Sailing one-way to Langkawi discover the Butang Islands to the south of Krabi set amid stunning scenery and shorelines dotted with golden beaches and small fishing hamlets.

Koh Samui A typically tropical hideaway, Koh Samui is characterised by soft powdery beaches edged by traditional bungalow resorts. Explore inland to visit the beautiful waterfalls of Hin Lat and Na Muang and head to Bo Phut Bay for an inspiring view of the Big Buddah. Known the world over for its beautiful scenery and excellent diving, Koh Samui is a fantastic choice for an active holiday on, off and under the water. In addition to the main island of Koh Samui, our cruising grounds covers three unique areas which include the untouched Ang Thong group of islands - The original setting for the novel The Beach. Koh Chang Our new base in the province of Trat, within easy access from Bangkok and Pattaya, offers cruising in the Koh Chang Archipeligo. Koh Chang National Park includes the islands of Koh Chang, the second biggest in Thailand, Koh Kut, Ko Mak and around 50 other islands. The group are famous for abundant corals, long sandy beaches and waterfalls. This will be Sunsails newest destination in Asia and is still almost undiscovered by other sailors. Ko Mak is much less developed than either Ko Chang or Ko Kut and although only ten miles from either island it is worth a full day to explore.

New adventure beckons in a corner of the Far East that is almost untouched by tourism. Mountainous jungle, fields of rice paddies, ancient monuments and exciting cities make a holiday here simply unmissable. Nha Trang was chosen as our charter base in Vietnam because of the superb sailing conditions, beautiful beaches and famous off-lying islands like Hon Tre, Hon Yen and Hon Rua. Venture west by air and explore Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), the modern face of Vietnam. From the airport, head along the highway lined by Thanh Long Green Dragon fruit orchards to your cruising area, known as the Khanh Hoa province. From Cam Ranh up to Van Ninh, some of the small islands have restaurants with local delicacies and small resorts where the friendly people are always welcoming. Diving is excellent in the northern part of the cruising area and our base can arrange this for you. Provisioning is an experience in itself as you browse amongst the local markets filled with fresh food and vibrant colour. Luxury hotels on the beach make it well worth spending a night ashore before or after your cruise. Take in a city tour of Nha Trangs colonial architecture and the Po Nagar Towers, a Cham site built between the 7th and 12th centuries and still a place of worship today.

Enjoy the best of this areas easy sailing ground from our base in the peaceful location of Faaroa Bay on the southeast shores of Raiatea. Rent a bicycle and explore the islands lush green walkways, waterfalls, grottos and hidden caverns. Understand the ancestral secrets of Polynesia amidst authentic traditional culture and let the friendly inhabitants teach you their way of fishing and dancing. Venture out of the lagoon through one of the passe in the surrounding reef and head across to Huahine. A secluded island with beautiful indented bays and white sandy beaches, Huahine, the Wild Island, has a handful of excellent resort hotels with good facilities. For a step back in time, visit the simple village of Fare and the thousand year-old archeological sites dating back to preEuropean times. Argued to be the most beautiful lagoon in the world, Bora Bora boasts tranquil waters containing fascinating marine life of devilfish, sea turtles, magnificent manta rays and dramatic coral gardens. On land, take a fourwheel drive trip along the road that circles Bora Bora and pass through colourful villages, interesting archeological sites and old army bunkers, or drive to the islands centre and admire the impressive Otemanu and Pahia mountains.

Your journey into paradise begins at our island capital base which has everything you need for an enjoyable cruise. Surrounded by three national marine parks, Mah is fringed with 68 beaches, while the inland revels in lush vegetation, from rainforests and coconut palms to cinnamon plantations. Port Victoria has several restaurants, art galleries, craft shops and a colourful market from which to replenish your provisions. Twenty four miles from Mah, Praslin enjoys the distinction of being the last refuge of the unique coco de mer palm in the Vallee de Mai, also the habitat of three of the rarest birds on earth. The smaller islands around Praslin are very close so you can weave your way from one to another, taking time to explore. Seclusion and tranquillity reign supreme on this island where ox carts and bicycles are still the main form of transport. Here you will find spectacular scenery, with granite rocks rising out of the white sands. You can take walks along the wide beaches, past a colony of giant tortoise or hire a bike and find the perfect place for a picnic. Wherever you sail in the Seychelles, an underwater adventure awaits with coral reefs, brilliantly coloured sponges and fish, including giant rays.

Wind and sailing conditions


The inner islands are protected from the cyclone belt and enjoy predictable winds, particularly from October to April. Mid December to the end of February are still warm but can be the wetter months. We recommend you bring light wet weather gear. When navigating through the coral you will need to pay close attention to your charts and cruising guide. The waters are tidal with a range of around 5 feet. May to September southeast winds prevail and October to April northwest winds are common. The strength is 5 to 20 knots all year round.
