Important Notes / Acceleration registration

Messko

Delivery Cargolog is an impact recorder to monitor events that may happen during transportation of heavy cargo like power transformers, turbines or generators. Standard recordings are accelerations in 3 axes, (inclination) angle, temperature and humidity. Depending on the ordered model, the device registers also vibrations or the GPS position. It is not possible to upgrade a device with GPS, if you request this feature please indicate it when you place the order. The device is manufactured in Sweden by Mobitron AB, Huskvarna in cooperation with Messko and exclusively distributed by Messko. Parts of the Cargolog system are usually packed in separate boxes. Please check for completeness after receipt. Generally, the communication unit and the software can be used on different laptops/PC and for different devices. USB driver Installation The connection between the communication unit and the laptop/PC is done by USB interface. When you insert the cable in a free slot on your laptop/PC, Windows usually detects it and opens the Found New Hardware Wizzard. For the following steps, please refer to chapter Cargolog IR Top Interface USB Quick Installation Guide. In case it is not detected, please go to the Cargolog folder on the CD and open the program PreInstaller or CargologVCPInstaller respectively. Please note that you will always have to install the USB Serial Port Driver and the USB Communicator. Installation of the software On the CD, there is a file called , the install file you need to install the Software. By clicking on it, you open the setup wizard that guides you through the installation.

Acceleration registration The Cargolog registers the acceleration in G (gravity) in three axis including the duration in milliseconds. The sampling range is 1 millisecond that means 1 kHz. Please find below a chart that helps to determine the frequency that depends on the duration of the acceleration: Duration in milliseconds (ms) 1 ms 2 ms 3 ms 4 ms 5 ms 8 ms 10 ms 20 ms 25 ms 40 ms 50 ms 100 ms 200 ms 1.000 ms (1 s) Frequency in hertz (Hz) 1.000 Hz (1 kHz) 500 Hz 333 Hz 250 Hz 200 Hz 125 Hz 100 Hz 50 Hz 40 Hz 25 Hz 20 Hz 10 Hz 5 Hz 1 Hz

It is generally more accurate to measure the time in milliseconds than the frequency. In order to exclude highfrequency accelerations (accelerations with short durations) in your evaluation you can set a filter in the Cargolog software. Please refer to page 10 in this manual.

General

1) General The Cargolog system consists primarily of two parts: a mobile, batteryoperated registration unit and a PC program for initiating and evaluating sampling sequences. Affix the registration unit to the transformer or goods you want to monitor. The results of a logging sequence make it easy to check if specific, pre-set limit values are exceeded; this is indicated directly on the registration unit and also during analyses in the supplied PC program, where you can monitor events minute by minute throughout the recording period. 1.1) Registration unit The registration unit is a battery-operated data logger with built-in sensors for the above data. The sample values are stored in a database. Affix the registration unit to the goods you want to monitor. When you press the Check Level button, LEDs light up on the registration unit if the specified limit values are exceeded. 1.2) PC Software A PC program, designed for a Windows* 98/NT/XP environment, is used to initiate the sampling sequence. A special version is available for Windows* 3.xx. / 95. The program is used

to configure the registration unit with sampling parameters beforehand, such as which sensors will be activated, limit values that will trigger the LEDs, logging interval, recording period etc. It also analyses the collected data, which is stored in a database and tagged with the unit's ID and date. The sample values can be displayed as a graph with a time axis and a sample value axis. You can zoom in on either axis for a detailed view. If you select individual values with the lefthand mouse button, you can study the values for each sampling channel with the time and date in a separate window. Clicking with the right-hand mouse button shows the minimum and maximum values of each channel throughout the recording period. 1.3) Technical data The registration unit samples data according to the parameters defined in the software: which sensors are active and the logging interval for each sensor. The collected data are protected in a non-volatile memory, so they are not lost if the battery dies or in the event of attempted sabotage. If the battery dies, the program indicates the time and date of this.

The PC Interface / Registration unit

5) The PC Interface 5.1) PC Interface, Top version The PC Interface is used to communicate with the registration unit, download parameters, initiate sampling sequences and upload the collected data after a recording period. This interface is placed on top of the registration unit, parallel to the battery case (see figure). Press the CL button to start communication. Note that the LED blinks to indicate active communication mode. The Top version can communicate with a registration unit that is inserted in the installation grip or a free-standing registration unit. The LED stops blinking 2530 seconds after you release the button, or 2030 seconds after communication ceases.

6) Registration unit 6.1) General The registration unit is a data logger with internal sensors for Humidity, Acceleration, Temperature and Tilt. Several different registration units are available. Standard sampling range is up to 10 G with resolution of 0,01G. Units with 1100 G and 0,325 G can also be supplied upon request.
A sampling range of 40+80C for Temperature and 0100 % for Humidity are standard on all registration units.

6.2) LED indicators The four LEDs on the registration unit have several functions, which are activated when you press the Check Limit (CL) button using a pen or similar object. The LEDs glow for 05 seconds after you press the button, or 0 to 30 seconds to indicate an exceeded limit. 6.3) LED functions Press the CL button for 4 to 5 seconds to activate the data logger. When you release the button, it indicates the following: a) If the registration unit is placed in the PC Interface: The right LED ("Angle") blinks for about 30 seconds to indicate that the unit is activated and ready to communicate. After this, it returns to sleep mode. b) If all four LEDs glow while the button is pressed, then blink five times when the button is released, this means that the unit has not yet been programmed for sampling. c) If all four LEDs light up and remain lit as long as the CL button is pressed, and then go out, this means that the unit is sampling.

d) If one or more of the LEDs continues to glow for 34 seconds after you release the CL button, this means that the indication limit for the sampling channel has been exceeded. e) If the left LED (Acceleration) blinks for 4 to 5 seconds after you release the CL button, this means that the programmed recording period is complete, the stop time has been reached, or sampling has stopped because the memory is full. 6.4) Power supply The unit is powered by one 3.6 V lithium battery. The cover for the battery case is on the top of the unit. Be sure to install the battery in the right direction. If the battery dies during operation, the internal memory still retains the collected sampling values thanks to a back-up battery. If the battery is removed during operation, the Tilt field at the top of the graph is marked in blue. You can see the exact time of this by pointing at the event with the pointer and looking in Score values, where Tilt/Reset is marked as: Reset+unknown.

Initiating a sampling sequence

Messko

7) Initiating a sampling sequence 7.1) Initiating a sampling sequence: To initiate a sampling sequence, you must first create an INIT file. Enter the start and stop time for the recording period and select the intervals for each sampling channel in the fields in the dialog box. You have a total of 38,000 samples, which can be allocated to 1 to 3 Acc sensors, 1 Temp sensor and 1 Humidity sensor. The Tilt function does not require storage space; it is logged together with one of the other channels. 7.2) Save the INIT file with a unique name and it can be used on a later occasion with similar conditions. All you need to change is the start and stop times. 7.3) INIT file field: To create an INIT file, you must enter: Start time: Stop time: Logging interval for Temp: Logging interval for Humidity: Acc X: on/off Temp: on/off GPS: YYYY:MM:DD YYYY:MM:DD SSSSS (max 65,535 seconds) SSSSS (max 65,535 seconds) Acc Y: on/off Humidity (Rh): on/off on/off Acc Z: on/off Angle: on/off HH: MM:SS HH: MM:SS

7.4) Registration Limit: You can set a minimum registration limit for the Acc X, Y and Z channels. This limits the size of the database by eliminating samples that are not of interest to the user. You decide the limits you want to set for each channel. Each channel is separate. See the technical specifications (section 1.3) for the lowest level that can be logged for each type of registration unit. 7.5) Indication limit: Set values for each sampling channel to define the limits that trigger an LED if they are exceeded. Over time, your own experience of previous sampling of this type of goods and transport will help you set suitable levels. 7.6) Acc resolution Can be set to 1.0, 0.1 or 0,01 G resolution for Registration limit and Indication limit. A device with sampling range up to 10 G has a standard resolution of 0,01 G.

The function Ext. switch (External switch) is only for the version with input, if a (container) door is open or closed. The function GSM is available from 05/2009 on.

Memory in CARGOLOG / Formatting the memory

Messko

9) Memory in CARGOLOG Each logged sample in CARGOLOG consists of a time stamp (4 bytes) and one or more data blocks. A data block for temperature or humidity consists of 2 bytes. A data block for acceleration consists of 16 or 12 bytes, depending on whether or not time is logged for each acceleration channel. The memory has 226,352 bytes available for data storage. 9.1) Example CARGOLOG is initiated to log humidity and temperature every 60 seconds. CARGOLOG runs for 4 consecutive days and nights. This produces 60 24 4 = 5,760 humidity and temperature data blocks. Each block is 4 + 2 + 2 = 8 bytes, which means that 46,080 bytes are used up for the humidity and temperature entries and 186,720 bytes are available for acceleration. Each acceleration sample takes 4 + 16 bytes to store, so you can store 9,336 acceleration samples at once.

EXAMPLE 2 CARGOLOG is initiated to log acceleration only. CARGOLOG can log 11,640 acceleration samples on the three channels, X, Y and Z. You do not need to specify a logging interval, since the entries are logged according to the selected registration level (trigger level). EXAMPLE 3 CARGOLOG is initiated to log humidity and temperature as in example 1, but without logging acceleration. In this case, the memory can store 29,100 entries and it will take over 20 days and nights to fill the memory. EXAMPLE 4 CARGOLOG is initiated to log humidity or temperature as in example 1, without logging acceleration. In this case, the memory can store 38,800 entries. For optimum use of memory capacity, the following calculation must be done to choose the sampling interval:

sampling period in seconds number of channels maximum number of registrations

= logging interval in seconds

You can manually reallocate sampling channels to adjust the logging interval as desired; for example if you want one channel to be logged at a different rate than the others. Just remember to calculate the interval so that the memory suffices for the entire period.

10) Formatting the memory Before you can start a new sampling sequence, you may need to format the memory (which deletes sampled data and settings from previous recording periods). This is necessary if the previous sampling sequence was interrupted or if the conditions of the sampling are changed. Note: All stored information will be deleted! If you want to save the data, download the memory as usual before reformatting.

10.1) Select Format memory in Cargolog from the Cargolog menu. 10.2) Place the registration unit in the PC Interface and press the CL button to format. Click OK and press and hold the CL button for 34 seconds while the program switches to communication mode. Monitor the reformatting process on screen.

Starting a sampling sequence / on command

11) Starting a sampling sequence To start a sampling sequence with CARGOLOG, you must first specify when and how the sampling should be done by transferring an INIT file, which you created earlier (see section 5). To transfer the file: 11.1) Make sure that the registration unit has fresh batteries by selecting View status in the Cargolog menu. The displayed value is the voltage of the battery. To do this, you must communicate with the registration unit. 11.2) Place the CARGOLOG unit in the PC Interface with the LEDs facing outwards from the opening.

11.3) Select Load parameters into Cargolog, either the icon or the alternative in the Cargolog menu. 11.4) Select and open the INIT file you want to use and make any necessary changes. 11.5) Click OK.

11.6) Press the CL button for 35 seconds on the FAT 90 unit to activate communication mode. The right LED blinks.

11.7) Click YES to continue with the transfer. 11.8) Monitor the transfer process on screen. 11.9) If an error message, Memory not read, is displayed, you must download the previous sampling sequence first. If sampling is still underway (the stop time is later than the last download), you must stop the sampling sequence in progress before you can start another. Use the Format memory in Cargolog function in the Cargolog menu; see point 10. 11.10) Remove the CARGOLOG unit from the PC Interface when transfer is complete. Place the registration unit at the sampling site.

12) Starting on command 12.1) In situations where you cannot determine beforehand when a sampling sequence is to start, you can program the registration unit to start on command. Use start by press button and transfer the INIT file as usual (see 7 and 8) Then start the registration unit by pressing and holding the CL button for 1520 seconds. The LEDs on the registration unit indicate start-up with the following sequence: 1) all LEDs glow steadily; 2) all go out; 3) the LEDs light up one at a time, from right to left. Now sampling has begun and you can release the CL button. If you keep holding the CL button, all LEDs will glow steadily, with a brief interruption every 5 seconds.

Downloading sampling data

Messko

13) Downloading sampling data 13.1) After sampling is complete, the results can be read and evaluated in two ways: by pressing the CL button for a quick check, or by downloading all data into the PC program. 13.2) Quick check: During or after a sampling sequence, you can do a quick check of the sample values by pressing the CL button (use a pen or similar object). When the CL button is pressed, all LEDs light up and remain lit as long as the button is held. When the button is released, any LEDs that are still lit indicate exceeded limit values. This light goes out automatically after 34 seconds. If none of the channels have sampled values outside the pre-set limits, all LEDs go out immediately when you release the CL button. 13.3) To download the sample values into the PC program, place the registration unit in the PC Interface, just as you did to transfer sampling parameters. Open the Cargolog menu and select Read, or click the icon in the menu.

13.4) Enter a name for the sampling sequence. 13.5) Click OK and press and hold the CL button for 34 seconds while the program switches to communication mode. 13.6) When downloading is complete, the program switches to standard mode again and you can download data from other CARGOLOG units or open the data file for analysis. 13.7) Click on the icon to open your data file, or select Open in the File menu. The entire sampling sequence is displayed.
