French: Dictionary work using the Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary online

11-14 Lesson Plan 1 Becoming familiar with the software

Class: Beginners This lesson should be part of the lesson on school subjects but can be adapted to other topics.

Length of lesson: Approximately one hour depending on ability of the group. The word search may be assigned as homework if not done during the lesson.

Objectives: Students will learn how to spell school subjects learnt in a previous lesson (la gographie, les maths, la biologie, la chimie, la musique, lducation physique, les travaux manuels, la physique, lducation religieuse, lart dramatique) Students will identify gender Students will learn how to pronounce the words learnt so far and select sounds for further studies

Starter Students will need to type and double click the word that the teacher writes on the board. Words to be found are: matire, commencer, lettre, manquer. (5 mins). Donnez-moi une matire (cest quoi en anglais?) qui commence <commencer> (cest quoi en anglais ?) par la lettre (cest quoi en anglais?) A, B, C, D etc. - Donnez-moi une matire avec deux mots (cest quoi en anglais?) - Quel mot manque <manquer> (cest quoi en anglais?) --- dramatique.

1. Main lesson Aim To learn and memorize the spelling of school subjects vocabulary using the ? function in the Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary online. NOTE: Students have not seen the school subjects in written form yet. Quelle lettre manque? ?him?e al?eman? ph?s?q?e hist??re espa??ol in???matique

chimie allemand physique histoire espagnol informatique. Aim To recognize which gender the subject is - le, la, or les The students should be starting to be familiar with genders by now. They may not be aware of how to recognize them in a dictionary. Depending on the ability of the group, the teacher may let the students work out the following exercise for themselves or (s)he may work through the process with them. Reminder: Some French words are masculine and others are feminine. If you look up a noun in the French / English section of the Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary online you will notice that it is followed by two letters. For example look at the word: rgle You will see nf after the word. n= noun nf f= feminine This shows that rgle should be preceded by la: la rgle. 2. Working out genders Write list of subjects on board. Students should then type these onto their worksheets. Which gender are these words? Remember to look only at the word as a school subject (use the accented character palette). gographie - ducation physique maths biologie - chimie - informatique art dramatique musique - dessin travaux manuels

Masculin singulier Fminin singulier art dramatique dessin gographie ducation physique biologie chimie informatique musique

Masculin pluriel Fminin pluriel travaux manuels maths

3. How do you pronounce? Explain that to the left of each headword (word they look up) on the screen they will find a small speaker icon. Being able to match sound and spelling will improve written and listening skills. Students may have started their own sound and spell page but, if not, encourage them to create a new one. They could do this in their exercise books and add new words as they learn them. Sound and speak - Use the speaker icon and listen to the following words: Education - How do you pronounce the TION? (a se prononce comment? - a se prononce ) Chimie - How do you pronounce the CH? Histoire - How do you pronounce the OI? Maths - Which letters are not pronounced? How do you pronounce TH? 4. Odd-one out Aim To develop thinking skills. Explain that there may be more than one explanation and, as long as they come up with something which makes sense, it will be acceptable. This can be done in English or French. aime - histoire - dteste prfre histoire (noun - the others are verbs ) (subject - the others are opinions) biologie physique franais - chimie franais (masculine - the others are feminine) (language versus sciences) stylo maths sciences - sport stylo (this is not a school subject) ducation physique art dramatique ducation religieuse dessin dessin (masculine - the others are feminine) (the others are compound names)
