Borrero ENGL 1101 October 24, 2011 Basketball Sub-Culture Basketball (commonly nicknamed "B-ball" or "hoops") is a team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing or "shooting" a ball through the top of a basketball hoop while following a set of rules. Basketball is one of the world's most popular and widely viewed sports. [1] A regulation basketball hoop consists of a rim 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet high mounted to a backboard. A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the hoop during regular play. A field goal scores two points for the shooting team if a player is touching or closer to the hoop than the three-point line, and three points (a "3 pointer") if the player is "outside" the three-point line. The team with more points at the end of the game wins, but additional time (overtime) may be issued when the game ends with a tie. The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it while walking or running (dribbling) or passing it to a teammate. It is a violation (traveling) to walk with the ball, carry it, or to double dribble (to hold the ball and then resume dribbling). Wikipedia, "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia." Basketball. This article portrays a simple image about basketball that would help someone who has never heard of the sport to better understand the sport. It is a common definition of the sport and it lays down some of the groundwork that is needed to understand the sport in full. It tells about

the simple rules that have to be understood to play the game at any level of play. The team with the most points wins the game and if the game is tied at the end of the four quarters or the two halves then an overtime period can be produced, depending on the level of play. Communication You need to be consistent with your verbal communication. Don't tell your team something today and then two days from now completely contradict yourself. Don't send your players mixed messages. Basketball coaching tip example - One of your players makes a mistake and you say in a sarcastic tone, "That was great". See how negative that's going to sound? Keep your tone consistent with what your words are intending to get across. Plays, BB. "Basketb all Tips and Plays." for someone then you hold up your fist so the other player will know and the defender will be clueless that you are there. The article

above is showing how it is important for the coach to communicate too. He needs to be consistent with what he says.

Leadership It's amazing what can be accomplished when no one is concerned with receiving the credit. Great basketball team cohesion occurs when everyone is working toward the same definitive goal (teamwork). The pursuit of the definitive goal transcends any individual goals when athletes are truly working as a team. The secret of winning basketball games is working more as a team and less as individuals. communication. Good teams communicate and communication is a huge part of teamwork. Leadership There has never been a great team that didn't have a leader on the floor playing alongside the rest of the team. Leadership like Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers, Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics or what about Jerry West, also with the Los Angeles Lakers? Today we have a basketball leadership group like Iverson, Kobe, Nash, Garnett and host of other superstars. Teams that don't have a player willing to stand out, to compete or to lead the way may win games, but, they will never play at the level we all strive to play at; as a championship team. Positions Although the rules do not specify any positions whatsoever, they have evolved as part of basketball. During the first five decades of basketball's evolution, one guard, two forwards, and two centers or two guards, two forwards, and one center were used. Since the 1980s, more specific positions have evolved, namely:
1.

Point guard: usually the fastest player on the team, organizes the team's offense by controlling the ball and making sure that it gets to the right player at the right time

2.

Shooting guard: creates a high volume of shots on offense; guards the opponent's best perimeter player on defense

3.

Small forward: often primarily responsible for scoring points via cuts to the basket and dribble penetration; on defense seeks rebounds and steals, but sometimes plays more actively

4.

Power forward: plays offensively often with their back to the basket; on defense, plays under the basket (in a zone defense) or against the opposing power forward (in man-to-man defense)

5.

Center: uses height and size to score (on offense), to protect the basket closely (on defense), or to rebound. Wikipedia, "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia." Basketball. Wikipedia, 18 Oct 2011. Web. 24 Oct 2011. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basketball>.

The main purpose of this article is to give the reader a general idea of the positions that are played in the game of basketball. The positions are often labeled by the words; point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. That is the most common use for the general public. As you move up in competitive play and start running plays then coaches will start calling them by the numbers that correspond with the words above in the cited article. Because when you start running plays it becomes more complicated for the players to understand the coach so the simple numbers help with that process. Strategy Main article: Basketball playbook The strategies also evolve with the game. In the 1990s and early 2000s, teams played with more "isolation". Teams that had one superstar would let one player, usually the point guard or shooting guard, run most of the offense while the other four offensive players get out of his/her way. Nowadays, teams tend to play with more teamwork. The "Center" position has evolved to become more of a taller "Small Forward" position. Since teams play more teamwork, ball movement has evolved with the game, and more jump shots have been taken as a result. There are two main defensive strategies: zone defense and man-to-man defense. In a zone defense, each player is assigned to guard a specific area of the court. In a man-to-man defense, each defensive player guards a specific opponent. Man-to-man defense is generally preferred at higher levels of competition, as it is intuitively easier to understand and avoids mismatches between players who play different positions. However, zone defenses are sometimes used in particular situations or simply to confuse the offense with an unexpected look. Wikipedia, "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia." Basketball. This article is all about the different strategies that coaches and players use to implement their game plan, offense, and defense. Offences and defense use just about the same amount of strategy! The teams that are opposing each other will often study the other teams offence and defensive habits and try to attack the weaknesses. For instance, if the other team cannot shoot jump shots very well then the other team will protect the inside of the court and let the other team stand on the outside and shoot jump shots. Also, if you have a shorter and faster team then you will use your speed to penetrate the defense and get open shots.
