Shalom Fellow Congregants, Our Cohen School is expanding! In November, we added a twice-amonth class for 3 to 4 year olds called Torat Tots: a program open to TY members and non-members, as well. I was fortunate to be at the school when the first class ended and the excitement as the students showed their art project and told their parents about the morning was palpable and heartwarming. We have received compliments on this new program and on the Cohen Religious School from parents. Related to the sale of the Cranston building, this month we showed our Park Avenue building to interested parties and are waiting to hear from them. We have continued to investigate the possibility of laying the foundation for the East Greenwich site before the winter and will keep you informed. At the last Board meeting, we discussed the nature of prayer at Torat Yisrael. Rabbi Levin is forming a working group of TY members who will work with her

to make our services more engaging, more meaningful and more accessible to every TY member and guest. Please let Rabbi Levin know if you would like to join this team (rabbi@toratyisrael.org / 419-5577). Invite your families and friends to join you at the Cole School in East Greenwich on Sunday December 4 at 3pm to enjoy the Ira S. and Anna Galkin Charitable Trust concert that will showcase Jewish music through the ages. The Cohen School News

There has been a lot of excitement in educational programming so far this year! In November, we began our bi-monthly pre-school program, Torat Tots. The children are engaged in arts and crafts, music, and storytelling focused on a specific Judaic theme each month. The children already have had a lot of fun learning new songs and making Shabbat candlesticks! Students in Grades 5-7 attended the exhibit hosted by Temple Torat Yisrael: The Genesis of Islam in America. There was a special educational component that included a tour of the exhibit and a discussion led by the Principal of the Islamic Day School in Warwick. In December, the students in the Cohen School will celebrate Chanukah with Jewish residents at Atria Harborhill. This will be followed by a Chanukah celebration at the house in East Greenwich. Yeladon students and Cohen School students will present their original Chanukah songs at a sing-down based on specific educational topics around the holiday: K-2: The Story of Chanukah Grades 3-4: The Debate of How to Light the Chanukah Candles (Hillel vs. Shammai) Grade 5: The History of Chanukah and Maccabean Revolt Grades 6-7: Where did the Miracle of Chanukah come from? We celebrate the holiday together by lighting the first candle on the first night of Chanukah and having a Community Chanukah Dinner. As part of our new curriculum this year, and as part of the students experiential education, there will be field trips for all students in grades 3-7 at the Cohen School beginning in January. Grades 3-4 Kashrut Treasure Hunt Armed with a page of kosher symbols and challenged with a list of kosher food treasures to hunt for, our 3rd and 4th grade students will take a trip to a local supermarket with Rabbi Levin for a Kashrut Treasure Hunt. All the kosher food they find will be purchased and donated to The Rhode Island Jewish Seniors Agency Full Plate Kosher Food Pantry. Grade 5 Jewish Rhode Island Students will visit the Jewish Alliance, Mikveh and Holocaust Resource Center. Grade 6 Jewish Boston Students will visit Jewish institutions in the Greater Boston area. Grade 7 Jewish New York Rabbi Levin will lead the students on an educational tour of Jewish New York. In collaboration with the Torat Yisrael Sisterhood, we will begin our Savta Stories in December. (Savta means grandmother in Hebrew.) Members of the Sisterhood will read stories to our children ages 2 3 on Sunday morning. This year we have instituted Class Parents to provide assistance with classroom programming and school-wide events. Andrea is Temple Torat Yisrael's part time social worker funded by the Kesher Program, a joint project of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island, Jewish Family Service, and the synagogue. This column is in direct response to your request (keep posted for further columns based on your ideas). Keep the responses to the survey coming - they are being read! A little about Kesher Kesher started four years ago, with the support of Jewish Family Service and the The Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island. The program inception was based on the need and interest of congregations of having social work services more readily available to serve congregants. Sometimes the idea of going for counseling can be intimidating. While Kesher does offer short term counseling there are many, many diverse services offered through our program. The intention of this newsletter is to educate and remind you of the breadth of Kesher services. Please note Kesher services are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL. Some the services offered through Kesher: Resources Looking for something? As a Kesher social worker I have access to the greater Jewish community, the specific programs through Jewish Family Service, and social service agencies throughout Rhode Island. Whether it is housing needs, homecare, elder care services, food programs (to name just a few), I know who to ask (if I dont know myself). Speakers/Programming Need a knowledgeable speaker on issues having to do with social services? We have experts on many topics of interest within our network and may know where to find a speaker to address specific topics of interests. Kesher has co-produced events with other temple groups as well. Referrals There are multiple programs within Jewish Family Service: homecare, adoption, counseling, a referral hotline, Lifeline, and other elder care services. For long term solutions I can use our network and the network JFS has built within the community to point you in the right direction. Short term supportive counseling Need to talk it out? For short term counseling and crisis management I can meet with you in person or over the phone to listen. Longer term arrangements (see referrals) can also be discussed. Connection to the larger Jewish community of RI You know someone who knows someone who knows someone sometimes having an intermediary to ask for you can give you the privacy and anonymity that you need. If you are curious about resources, etc. please remember that you have the benefit of confidentiality when working with Kesher. You probably noticed that I wrote, Some of the services offered through Kesher. The reason for this is that the truth is that the best way for Kesher to work is with your feedback and in-put. This is one of the most important reasons we put out a survey - to get your sense of what would make the program better, stronger, and most useful. So what can you do for Kesher? The easiest answer is to complete the survey (with the option of entering to win a $5.00 gift card to Dunkin Donuts). Another possibility is to get in contact with me. Librarians Corner by Laura Steele, Torat Yisrael Librarian

Hanukkah Moon by Deborah Da Costa and illustrated by Gosia Mosz is a childrens book about Hanukkah except with a twist. With a golden palette and a soft tone, this lovely story highlights a tradition overlooked in most Hanukkah literature. Isobel has gone to stay with her Aunt Luisa, an artist who has just arrived from Mexico. At her aunt's house, everything seems both familiar and different, like a banner that reads "Feliz Januca" hanging over the fireplace, and a dreidel-shaped piata. Lighting the hanukkiah, eating latkes, and exchanging gifts are familiar, but the story of Rosh Hodesh, the time of the new moon that occurs once a month, and always during Hanukkah, is not. It is the quiet yet meaningful impact that Luisa has on Isobel that makes this book so special, opening her eyes to different ways of seeing and of celebrating, much as this book will give young readers another perspective on ways that Jews from other countries and traditions celebrate familiar holidays. Soothing watercolor and crayon illustrations in shades of gold and purple beautifully convey the affectionate relationship that develops between the child and her aunt. An author's note relates the traditional story of Hanukkah. I found this to be a lovely addition to our library.

Torat Tots: Our TY Pre-School Program
