Bata Shoe Company (BangIadesh) Ltd.

Bata BangIadesh
The Bata Shoe Organization was founded in 1834 by Czech businessman Tomas Bata in the city of Zlin, what was
then Czechoslovakia. Coming from a family of shoemakers with a long heritage of eight generations and over three hundred years,
Tomas Bata capitalized on knowledge, expertise and skills to propel his newly founded company forward. The introduction of
factory automation, long distance retailing and modernized shoe making ensured the profitability of the company from the very
beginning. !t is now the world's largest manufacturer and marketer of footwear operating across the globe.
Today the Bata Shoe Organization is a sprawling geocentric company encompassing operations in more than 70 countries around
the world and is managed by 4 regional commercial business units (CBUs) across five continents. !t serves 1 million customers per
day, employs more than S0,000 people, operates S,000 retail outlets, manages a retail presence in over 70 countries and runs 27
production facilities across 20 countries.
!n Bangladesh, Bata started its operation in 1362. The company is one of the largest tax-paying corporate bodies contributing Tk.
1.2 billion (year 2003) which represents approximately 70 of tax paid by the entire footwear sector of Bangladesh. Currently Bata
Shoe Company (Bangladesh) Limited operates two manufacturing facilities - one in Tongi and the other in Dhamrai. With a
production capacity of 110,000 pairs of shoes daily, the company also has a modern tannery facility with an output of S million
square feet of leather annually. Annual shoe sales currently stands at slightly more than 30 million pairs with a turnover for the year
2003 of Tk S billion.

Tongi Factory Dhamrai Factory
Bata is playing a pivotal role in developing the leather industry of the country. Bata has a firm commitment to ecofriendly business
and a state of the art Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) has been set up to provide a pollution free environment for both workers and
the locality.
Fashion would never be complete without a well designed pair of shoes. This marketing insight has prompted Bata to introduce a
number of designers' collections for men, women and children. !nternationally renowned brands such as Bata Comfit, Narie Claire,
Hush Puppies, Scholl, Nike, Bubblegummers, Sandak, Weinbrenner and B'first are a few names that testify to the momentous
change towards branded shoe marketing in Bangladesh. Specialized shoe categories such as athletic shoes have been targeted
through development of the Power brand. Uncompromising quality with striking designs have put Bata shoes in a key position to
appeal to different segments of consumers.
Another major change in the Bata business policy is the segmentation of retail outlets according to profiles of different market
segments and the introduction of novel concepts such as Bata City Stores. These selective outlets, in conjunction with other types
of outlets such as Bata Bazar and Bata Family Stores, are adding a new level of consumer satisfaction. The City Stores incorporate
spacious floor space allowing a comfortable shopping experience, modern interior dcor enriched with novel shelving systems,
fittings, fixtures and lighting that can be found in the large retail shops in the Far East and Europe. Bata has a network of 242 retail
outlets located strategically in different parts of the country. These retail outlets are an integral part of our brand marketing. This
extensive retail network is supplemented by an equally extensive network of depots and dealers. Bata has 13 Wholesale depots
covering Bangladesh. Under these depots 330 RWD (Registered Wholesale Dealers) and SS3 DSP (Dealer Support Program) stores
are operating. Bata Bangladesh has already developed its vision up to 2013 showing significant business growth as well as
increased market share.
One of the critical areas associated with external shareholders and the community at large is the Corporate Social Responsibility
Program of the company. From supporting nationwide sports sponsorships and disabled persons to addressing environmental
concerns, scholarship programs, charity contributions etc - Bata has always supported individuals and communities in need.
Partnerships with other voluntary and charitable organizations is another prominent feature of Bata's corporate social responsibility.
Bata, in partnership with CARE, extends assistance to over two thousand rural women in order to become independent
entrepreneurs in the Rajshahi, Comilla and Chittagong division selling shoes from door to door under its Rural Sales Programme.
age of

Since its inception, Bata Shoe Company (Bangladesh) Ltd. has strived towards one goal - customer satisfaction. With the vision of
building a worldwide family of satisfied customers and dedicated workers the legacy of Tomas Bata continues strong and unabated
to this day - the tradition is safe.

ateriaIs - Upper, Liner
Leather
The most often used natural material, with ideal properties for shoe production. The following types are used: cow
hide, pigskin, goatskin, horse leather, calf leather, reptile leather. Leather is breathable, soft, absorptive, and adapts
to individual feet shape well. Leather types:
Smooth leather - textured surface with small pores, matt or shiny.
Patent/enamelled leather - smooth and high-gloss surface, obtained by applying a layer of enamel to the
leather. The surface is susceptible to mechanical damage, chemical corrosives, moisture and frost.

Nubuck - leather sanded on the hair side. Buff nubuck - a special category - is very fine nubuck, on which
even fine contact with fingers or other objects leaves traces, which can be brushed out.

Suede - leather sanded on the flesh side, less durable than nubuck, with hair on the surface.
Sole leather - Type of cow leather used to make soles. Very sensitive to moisture and uneven surface.
Coated leather - leather coated with a thin layer of other material, such as polyurethane. This ensures durability and
easier maintenance, used especially on sports shoes.
o shoe materiaI better than naturaI Ieather.
Leather can be stretched and shaped to fit. At the same time, it retains its shape, breathability and other
characteristic properties.
Bata is one of the world's largest sellers of leather shoes and knows everything about leather, the company has been
producing leather shoes for more than 110 years!
Bata carefully selects the best leather and continuously tests its quality. ts leather products bear the seal of BATA
WORLD QUALTY LEATHER.
Other materiaIs
Synthetics - PVC, PU, rubber, plastic, artificial leather, poromerics - appearance of these materials is often
reminiscent of leather, but their properties (breathability, absorption, adaptability) are inferior to those of natural
leather. Usually combined with breathable liners made of modern PVC and PU. New possibilities in colours and
shapes inspire new product ranges, especially in youth fashion. Apart from the above advantages, these materials
are also cheap.
Textiles - woven, unwoven - used for light, often summer, or indoor shoes. The latest textile-based material is stretch,
providing enough wearing comfort. Textiles are breathable, easy to maintain and have sufficient durability.
Poromerics - Synthetic leather, whose appearance and properties are similar to those of natural leather. Very simple
maintenance.
Rubber - Similar properties to plastic materials, used for special protective and work shoes.
Combined materials - Used especially in sports shoes.
Watertight membrane - Special material ensuring water-tightness and breathability (GORE-TEX etc.). Used mostly in
sports and trekking shoes.
OutsoIes
age 3 of

The outsoles are the bottom parts of every shoe, coming into contact with the ground. They protect the foot against
cold, warmth, uneven surface, sharp objects, etc. Types of outsoles:
Leather outsole - Darkens when exposed to sunlight. Used on dance/indoor shoes. Repairs necessary when used
daily/for long time. Often combined with rubber coatings.
Rubber outsole - Flexible, weather-resistant, easy to maintain. The lightest type - Styropor - for indoor shoes.
Synthetic outsole - Flexible, easy to maintain, medium durability, slippery
!roduction methods
The method used to connect the upper and the sole influences a shoe's functionality and maintenance.
Glued shoes - The most common technology, the sole is glued to the upper. The glued seam may fail if exposed to
moisture, sweat, or may mechanically separate.
Flexible shoes - Very comfortable, lightweight and flexible shoes, with attractive sewn-through edges. Flexible thanks
to the upper being sewn directly to the sole without an insole. Limited water-tightness. Used mostly on indoor/dry
environment shoes.
Moulded shoes - The sole is pressed, injected, or moulded to the upper. Used mostly on sports and leisure shoes.
The quality of the joint and the sole itself depends on the material used.
Welted shoes - The upper/sole joint is sewn through a welt. Durable and strong joint.

Customer serviceFAQ about shoes

My son's feet size is 22. Can he wear size 24 shoes?
His walking and sports shoes should only be bigger by 10 - 13 mm, or one size, than his feet. Tight-fitting shoes are
not recommended for sports. The old shoemaker's advice is: "longer and narrower is better". "Narrower" here applies
to the volume across the toe joints, not in the boot tip. No shoes stretch in length, natural material shoes sometimes
stretch in width.

and-down shoes, yes or no?
Not recommended for hygiene reasons. Mycosis, eczema and other skin conditions may be transmitted.

My child has flat feet. What can I do for the healthy development of their feet?
The human feet start to develop fully around the age of one. This is the time to prepare for treatment of orthopaedic
problems. Apart from suitable footwear and orthopaedic aids, a professional doctor - orthopaedist - should also be
consulted.
