Question 1

Solve the following linear programming problem by graphing.

Minimize Z = 5X + Y
Subject to:
3X + Y < 1800
2X + 3Y < 2250
X - 3Y > 0
X, Y < 0 marks)

Question 2

A real estate developer is planning to build an apartment building specifically for graduate
students on a parcel of land adjacent to UiTM. Three types of apartments can be included in
the building: one-bedroom, two-bedroom or three-bedroom units. Each one-bedroom unit
requires 700 square feet; each two-bedroom unit requires 800 square feet; and each three-
bedroom apartment unit requires 1,000 square feet.

The developer believes that the building should include no more than 15 onebedroom units,
25 two-bedroom units, and 12 three-bedroom units. Local City Council does not allow the
developer to build more than 40 units in this particular building, and restricts the building to a
maximum of 40,000 square feet. Market studies indicate that one-bedroom apartment can be
rented for RM500 per month, two-bedrooms for RM700 per month and three bedrooms for
RM900 per month.

The developer would like to determine how many rental units of each type it should include in
the building plans in order to maximize the potential rental income from the building.

Question 3

Gambang Electronics is considering producing three new computer boards on a daily basis.
Each board will be produced from various combinations of plastic, copper, and transistors.
Let XL x2 and x3 represent the number of board 1, board 2 and board 3 produced
respectively. s1t s2 and s3 are slacks for plastic, copper, and transistor, respectively.
Gambang Electronics has formulated this problem as a linear programming profit
maximization problem, and solved using the simplex method.

The optimal tableau is given below.
