Formative Assessment (linked to HOWL grades)

Summative Assessment (linked to standard grades)

Ecology: Students can use a food web to identify and distinguish producers, consumers and decomposers. They can explain how energy is transferred between trophic levels. Watersheds: Students can explain the relationship between topography and land use and explain how these factors affect the water cycle and water quality. Stream Chemistry: Students can analyze pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate, temperature, and macroinvertebrate diversity of local streams to develop their own conclusions about water quality and stream health. Scientific Inquiry: Students can follow given procedures and design their own to collect data, and write up their analysis of the conclusions.

I can explain what the arrows in a food web show and use them correctly when creating a model of a food web. I can define trophic levels. I can categorize organisms in a soil food web and an aquatic food web into different trophic levels. I can describe how producers, consumers, and decomposers obtain energy. I can explain what factors effect a population to change over time. I can define run-off. I can create a model that explains how the water cycle works. I can explain the relationship between land use and run-off. I can explain how urban and agricultural run-off affects stream chemistry data and water quality. I can make predictions about how changes in land use will affect water quality.

I can explain the relationship between dissolved oxygen, temperature, and macroinvertebrate diversity. I can give examples of several factors that can raise and lower stream chemistry data. I can explain what the healthy range is for each stream chemistry indicator. I can analyze the stream chemistry data to develop conclusions about water quality.
I can follow procedures to collect water samples and test for pH, temperature, DO, nitrate, and phosphate. I can collect and classify macroinvertebrate species that are pollution tolerant and pollution sensitive.
