Abbey Sullivan REL 102- 003 Timothy 1 Assignment 1. Why does the Paul of 1 Corinthians 7 prefer celibacy to marriage?

This can be answered in one sentence, and perhaps even in one word! You can be free to explore and devote yourself to the Lord when you do not have a partner. If you are married you devote yourself to your partner and less devotion towards the Lord. 2. What does the Paul of 1 Timothy think about marriage and celibacy? What motivates these attitudes? Back up your answers with quotations from 1 Tim (chapter and verse). Paul thinks that deacons are allowed to marry once as said in 1 Timothy 3:12-13 because he says those that serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves. He also says that liars are to forbid marriage (1 Timothy 4:3). He goes on to explain how everything that God creates should be good, and liars are not good so they cannot take part in marriage. 3. What tensions do you perceive between the two Pauls (that is, the Paul of the genuine letters and the Paul of 1 Timothy) regarding their discussions of womens leadership roles? Make note of specific verses in 1 Corinthians, Galatians, Romans 16, and 1 Timothy. How do you account for these tensions? The tensions perceived between the two Pauls concerning 1 Timothy and the genuine letters of Paul is that the genuine letters do not oppose women taking parts, or high roles in the church. Romans 16 is welcoming of all the women that have roles in the church in their own different way. In Corithians 3:1 you see the author referencing men and women on the same level with Christ. In 1 Timothy he says I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man (1 Timothy 2:12). 4. Read 1 Tim 2:13-14. Was Adam formed first, then Eve? Was the woman deceived, but Adam not deceived? Look at the creation stories of Gen 1-3 (particularly Gen 1:26-27; 2:18-24; 3:1-7) to support your answers. In 1 Tim 2:13-14 is clearly states that Adam was formed first then Eve. Adam was not deceived, but Eve was. In Gen 2:18-24, it explains how God wanted to find man (Adam) a partner so he created animals and birds. Adam couldnt find a partner from these, so God took one of his rib cages and made a woman out of it (Eve). This would go with Timothy saying that Adam was created first and than Eve was deceived. 5. What difference does the theological argument in 1 Timothy 2:11-15 make in the real world? Try to think of specific ways these verses could be used today. The difference this argument makes in the real world is that women are inferior to men. It basically supports the fact that men were created first, therefore they are better than women. It also supports the fact that we are to not have more power than men, men can only teach women not vice versa. Thankfully, this is not the case in todays society, but it can help men keep thinking they are almighty.
