COURSE OUTLINE Academic Year 2007-2008 WELCOME TO SOCIOLOGY 1! I am Prof. Nanette Espina Calaor.

This outline is designed to guide us throughout the semester. BASIC INFORMATION Course Number : SOCIOLOGY 1 Course Title : Sociology with Family Planning Course Description: Focuses on mans society, social groups, processes and social interactions. Also emphasizes the value of family and family planning. Its 5 interrelated parts: (1) Basic Sociological Theories and Methods (ex: Sociology, Sociologists, Research Works); (2) Sociological Concepts (ex: Culture, Values, Socialization, Deviance & Collective Behavior); (3) Basic Social Institutions (ex: the Family, Education, Religion, Government, Economy); (4) Communities (ex: Urban and Rural); and (5) Social Change and Social Policy (ex: on Development, Women and Children, Population). Course Credit Prerequisite : 3 units : None

COURSE OBJECTIVES At the end of the course, the student should be able to: 1. DEVELOP a scientific and critical framework in understanding society; 2. COMPREHEND social involvement in groups and institutions; 3. SHARPEN observational and analytical skills; 4. RESPECT cultural diversity and social change; 5. CONDUCT empirical study on mans society and culture. Kindly make an appointment by texting your class monitor/s. Fill-up the student consultation form. Do not come during lunch time. USE OF THE AVR FOR GROUP PRESENTATIONS: Make arrangements with the AVR staff at least 2 weeks before your presentation. Fill-up an AVR slip, to be signed by me and your Deans staff. Remind the class to proceed to the venue by writing a note on the board. Inform the Deans office also. ATTENDANCE, ETC.: A student is allowed to commit until 6 absences for a 1.5-hour class (3 absences if 3-hour class). Going beyond the allowed number may mean being DROPPED. An absence may only be excused if a MEDICAL CERTIFICATE or ADMISSION SLIP is presented. MAKE-UP QUIZ is not given. Put cellular phones on silent mode. Bringing out of any copy of Sociology book during discussion is discouraged. Refer to your own notebook during discussion. Practice Christian discipline.
