THE PRPOPHET IBRAHIM

Long ago Allah gave the honor of choice to a man called Ibrahim. He became a Prophet. His native Mesopotamia is the present southern Iraq. He was an ideal model for mankind. Speaking highly of him the Holy Quran says: Ibrahim was indeed a paragon of virtue, obedient to Allah, ever inclined to him and he was not of those who set up equals to Allah. He was ever grateful for His favors, We chose him and guided him to a straight path; and We bestowed on him good in this world and in the hereafter, he will surely be among the righteous. [16:121-123] His Nation: In the days of Prophet Ibrahim ignorance prevailed upon the minds of the people. Most of the people had no knowledge of Allah and His teachings. They worshipped the sun, the moon and the stars. They prayed to the idols made of wood and stone and made many offerings to them. Ibrahim was the son of Adhar. He was an idol carver and a staunch worshipper of idols. He did all he could to compel Ibrahim to worship the handicrafts of man but he flatly refused to do so. He hated even the idea of worshipping the idols which could neither see, nor hear nor speak. His Preaching: Ibrahim received the message of Allah through an angel, Gabriel. Gradually he was commanded to start preaching. As he was a strong man in his will and determination, he worked very hard. He began his mission in the teeth of opposition. He argued with his people with great vigor regarding the folly of worshipping the idols. He called people to worship the Lord of the heavens and the earth and the Creator of everything.

The people paid no heed to his teachings. They insisted on their ways. They did not refrain from worshipping the twinkling stars, shining moon and the ugly idols. The priests kept on encouraging the people to disbelieve in Prophet Ibrahim. Ibrahim breaks the idols: There was a grand ceremony outside the locality and everyone had to participate in the celebrations. Almost everyone from the town attended the ceremony except Ibrahim. He had a special plan in his mind. He proceeded towards the temple escaping the sight of others. When he entered the temple. he saw there many statues which stood motionless and helpless. Ibrahim lifted his axe and began to smite the idols turn by turn. The idols fell to the ground with a big thud. The floor was loaded with numerous noses, ears, heads, arms, legs and other parts of the idols. He broke all the idols in the temple but spared the chief one. When the celebrations came to an end, the people returned. The priests went directly towards the temple as usual and some people accompanied them. They saw that the idols were smashed to pieces. The people rushed to the temple on hearing the news. Everyone was in a furious mood. Then someone said that Ibrahim would have..

peace and defined as total submission to One God, stands on five pillars. Faith and prayer are primarily meant to ensure physical, mental, social and spiritual peace of individuals. Fasting and Zakah are aimed, in addition, at social and national peace. With Hajj, the system of peace assumes global dimensions. The annual pilgrimage to Makkah, the seat of Kabah, the first place of the worship of God on earth, is a reminder to the world that Islams mission of peace has global aims. And it is a reminder to Muslims that they must earnestly try in that direction. It spreads the message of universal brotherhood and equality irrespective of race, color and creed not only among Muslims but also among the rest of mankind. Pilgrimages are popular in many religious communities, but the pilgrimage of Islam has a very special significance.

the whole mankind. It is a comprehensive, highly systematic and perfectly co-ordinated exercise having spiritual, collective, socio-economic and global dimensions. Pilgrims understand that this is a lifetime opportunity to seek Gods forgiveness for their sins, enhance their nearness to God and mend their ways. They sacrifice their time, their money, their emotional attachment to their near and dear ones and their physical comforts for the pleasure of God. Their total involvement in spiritually elevating rituals for several weeks goes a long way to make them better human beings; a person who has performed Hajj has an increased credibility in the eyes of the people.

on earth, which serves as a symbol of monotheism. The symbolization is of paramount importance. This being the greatest symbol of the unity of God also becomes the greatest symbol of the unity of mankind. It is reminded that since the beginning of human history man has been told to worship only one God. The unity of mankind cannot be a practical reality unless the whole of mankind submits to one system. Only a system of God can be the rally-

When they return home, normally they are much transformed persons; most of them if not all demonstrate visible changes in their attitude towards themselves and the people around themselves. This provides a unique spectacle of equality and brotherhood and determination to fight against evils. The history of the purpose of education is as old as the history of the human civilization. But the system of education has been changing through ages. Knowing the purpose of education is very important in systematizing the process of education. Without it education would become a directionless journey.

Be a Lake
The old Master instructed the unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it. How does it taste? the Master asked. Awful, spat the student. The Master chuckled and then asked the young man to take another handful of salt and put it in the lake. The two walked in silence to the nearby lake and when the student swirled his handful of salt into the lake, the old man said, Now drink from the lake. As the water dripped down the young mans chin, the Master asked, How does it taste? Good! remarked the student. Do you taste the salt? asked the Master. No, said the young man. The Master sat beside this troubled young man, took his hands, and said, The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains the same, exactly the same. But the amount we taste the pain depends on the container we put it into. The Moral: My dear friends, when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things... Stop being a glass. Become a lake!

done this, because he consistently spoke ill our gods. Ibrahim was summoned and asked if he had destroyed all those idols. He remained silent for a while. Afterwards he directed the chief idol on whose neck was hung the axe with which the havoc was done and told them to ask the chief idol if it can speak. The people understood what Ibrahim said and they hung their heads out of shame and said to Ibrahim : certainly you know that they do not speak. Although they felt ashamed yet they remained stubborn, they decided to burn Ibrahim alive for causing destruction to their idols. But Allah ordered the fire not to harm Ibrahim , and thus he was saved. He was forced out of the land. He migrated to different places, preaching the message of Allah. Discovery of ZamZam: When Ibrahim was migrating from place to place, Allah ordered him to leave his wife (Hajera) and baby (Ismail) alone in Makkah, which had neither a drop of water, nor a green leaf. When the stored wa-

ter was exhausted, Hajera ran desperately in search of water between the two hillocks, Safa and Marwa, but found no water and Ismail was crying. She came back to her thirsty infant and was surprised to see that a spring (named ZamZam) emerged beneath the foot of Ismail. She heaved a sigh of relief and quenched the thirst of her baby with the water. With the discovery of the ZamZam well, people began settling in Makkah. The Great Sacrifice : Ibrahim saw a vision to sacrifice his son, Ismail. He had a solid faith in Allah and his life was dedicated to His service. Ibrahim had no hesitation in complying with what he was ordered to do. He related his vision to his teenaged son, who had no objection and was willing to be sacrificed as Allah had willed it. Ibrahim on the tenth day of DhilHijja, fulfilled the command. Allah saved Ismail and provided a fine sheep under the knife of Ibrahim which was slaughtered. Reviving this spirit of sacrifice, we celebrate Eid-ul-Adha.

Centuries ago, ships used primitive compasses. A magnetized needle, placed on a float in a bowl of water, pointed approximately north. The instructions below explain how to make such a compass and how to build an improved version with a suspended needle. You can also use the second type to locate iron or steel objects buried in the ground.
YOUNG INVENTOR :

(7) Fix the card to a wooden block by means of a pin or tack stuck through the center of the card. (8) Glue to the wooden block a frame made from three thin wooden strips (see diagram). (9) Make a small hole in the center of the strip by hammering a small nail through it. (10) Pass a fine thread through this hole and tie a knot in its end. (11) Tie the other end of the thread to the frame so that the needle hangs centrally over the compass card. The needle should now turn to point approximately northsouth. (12) When the needle has come to rest, rotate the compass card until its north pole lies directly below the red , north seeking pole of the compass needle. The directions north, east, south, and west will now be indicated by the points on the compass card. Nearby iron or steel objects will tend to attract the compass needle, causing an error called deviation. To avoid this error, always ensure that you are well away from metal objects when using the compass for direction finding. Because iron and steel objects deflect the needle, the compass can be used to find such objects buried under the ground.

Austin Meggit of US was nine when he invented a device for carrying a baseball bat, ball and glove safely on the handlebars of a bicycle. He was awarded the US-Patent in 2000.

Construction: (1) Get a metallic needle or cut a strip(8x80mm) metal from a tin can. (2) Magnetize the needle by repeatedly stroking it, in one direction only , with one pole of a strong magnet. (3) Cut a thin disk of cork (wooden piece). (4) Float the cork disk on water in a plastic bowl. Don not use a steel bowl as this will prevent the compass from working properly. Place the needle on the cork. The cork should now turn slowly until the needle points approximately, in a northsouth direction. (5) When you have found which end of the needlepoints northward, paint it red for identification. (6) Now use the same needle to make a more elaborate compass. First, make a compass card, as shown in the diagram, from a cardboard.

By Heaven with its cyclical systems. (Surat at-Tariq: 11)
This word interpreted as "cyclical" in Qur'an translations also has meanings of "sending back" or "returning". The Ionosphere layer reflects radio waves broadcast from a certain centre back down to the Earth, thus enabling broadcasts to be received from long distances. The Ozonosphere turns harmful cosmic rays like ultraviolet back to space, hence preventing them from reaching the Earth and harming life. The troposphere layer enables water vapor rising from the surface of the Earth to be condensed and turn back down to the Earth as rain.
