Drug name: ATENOLOL General details Atenolol is a beta-blocker that reacts directly on the heart, therefore reducing the

risk of pulmonary side effects. It reduces cardiac output by slowing the heart rate. Used in the treatment of hypertension, angina and some cardiac arrhythmias it is a broad spectrum -blocker. It is a drug that can be used for prolonged periods, sometimes for life. Due to it only having to be taken once daily, it can be an advantage for the elderly or individuals that have problems remembering to take medication. Muscle weakness may occur due to direct effect on muscle adrenoreceptors. Dietary advice No specific dietary advice for the drug apart from general advice about diet and the control of hypertension and other cardiovascular disease.

Other drug interactions Never used alone. Phenoxybenzamine should always be used with a -blocker. When used with anti-arrhythmic drugs, atenolol may increase risk of adverse effects on the heart. Will also have an effect on the blood sugar levels in association with anti-diabetic drugs. If taken with Calcium channel blockers, may further reduce BP and/or heart rate (may reduce the force of the hearts pumping action)

Special precautions Avoid in asthmatic individuals. Cardioselective -blocker to be used under medical supervision. Advise doctor if you have other heart problems, have long term kidney problems, have diabetes and if you have a lung disorder such as asthma orbronchitis.
