Introducing Electric Circuits 1 (EC1) LAB

1. Objectives of EC1 LAB

Developing practical abilities of students. Developing physical sense of theoretical laws by providing in-depth understanding. Developing scientific approach by making emphasis on strong relationship between theory and practical. Introducing and making strong profits of computer-added tools. By the end of EC1 LAB, students should be able to do the following: Identifying and dealing with basic components and instruments used in EC1 LAB. Connecting Electric circuits. Measuring Electric quantities. Simulating Electric circuits.

Tools of EC 1 LAB

2.1. EC_ELC_01 board All assignments of this LAB will be performed using EC_ELC_01 board and EC1 components. Figure F0.1 shows this board.

This board is designed to be used for Electric Circuits 1 (EC1), Electric Circuits 2 (EC2), ELectronic circuit Fundamentals (ELF), ELectronic Circuits 1 (ELC1) and ELectronic Circuits 2 (ELC2) LABs. For each LAB the appropriate components are needed. It consists of a large number of connection points. These are grouped into sets of internally-connected points. It is a passive board; meaning it has no internal power supplies. Though, an external power supply should be used. Any circuit can be performed by plugging its components and connecting them.

Some special sets of internally-connected set of points are: GND/0: It is designed to be the reference node for all components and power supplies. +15V: It is designed to be connected to an external constant and positive power supply. -15V: It is designed to be connected to an external constant and negative power supply. 0~20V: It is designed to be connected to an external variable positive power supply. L1, L1 and L3: These are designed to be connected to an external alternating current power supplies.

These sets are intended to be used in a certain manner, but the actual functions of them depend on your usage. For example if you connect the set of connection points labeled +15V to an actual voltage equals -10V that means this set of connection points is no longer at a voltage equals +15V, but rather at a voltage equals -10V.

Most of the used components in EC1 LAB are resistors. By the end of this LAB capacitors and inductors may be introduced. See figure F0.2.

2.2. Equipments and instruments The following equipments and instruments will be used through out this LAB: DC power supply: Almost all EC1 circuits need to be power-supplied by a DC voltage. Figure F0.3 shows an example of a DC power supply.

F0.3: An example of a power supply

Digital Multi-Meter DMM: It is used, mainly, to measure voltages and currents. It is also used to measure resistors and to test components. Figure F0.4 shows an example of a DMM.

By the end of this LAB function generators and oscilloscopes will be introduced.

F0.5: An example of an oscilloscope PSPICE program will be used to simulate circuits. This program will enable students to prepare and understand assignments before the LABs.

Assignments and organization of EC1 LAB

EC1 LAB concentrates on DC Electric circuits and related laws. The following main topics will be covered: Components and circuits. DC Electric quantities. Ohm's law. Kirchhoff's law. Superposition theorem. Thevenen's theorem. Power. First order circuits. Almost each assignment contains the following parts: Objectives and outcomes: Students should concentrate on those important points. Theoretical part: a brief explanation.
